Following some issues on another forum I use, I was just wondering whether moderators/administration have access to our PM's? Not wishing to upset anyone, but would like to know?
-
No we don't - private messages are private. However, in the interests of maintaining the friendly atmosphere of the site, the rules of acceptable behaviour extend beyond posting on the forum to messages too - so if anyone receives a pm they aren't happy about ( rude & insulting, or people trying to sell pups etc), then please contact a member of Admin or one of the mods.

I think that is the same with most Forums Anita - I know on other Forums I've been involved with that Mods generally don't have a facility to see PM's - I'm not sure if Site owners/Admin can ;)

thanks for the prompt reply

With the new format, how do we know if we've gotten a PM?

If you go to your profile and click on Personal Message Options, you can then tick the box - Show a popup when you receive new messages.
Or like Jann you can choose to receive an email. :D

I have pop up and e mail, exactly the same as before :D
Also the "my messages" will change to "my messages 1 " when you have an unread message :D

Admins do not have access to the PM database except under very rare circumstances such as a serious complaint being made, we will then make efforts to access the database code and sift through enormous amounts of 'data' in order to establish the facts (to this date I think this has only happened once.) Occasionaly if there is a technical fault we will access the database but only in order to delete any erroneous code which may be causing problems (weve done this a few times in order to get the forum going again) we do not however scan through anyones PM's as generally we know what we are looking for (ie the 'buggy' code which is causing the forum to trip)
So basically no, PM's are not routinely scanned/read or snooped upon in anyway except under the above circumstances, even then alot of the data is not in a human readable format, it isn't all encrypted but neither is it easy to read normally.
Hope this helps. Out of interest, may I enqire as to what those issues were on the other forum you vist? Generally speaking I mean, you don't need to divulge specifics. It's interesting for us to know about these things in order to avoid similar problems cropping up here.
