Title: Cockers and Thunderstorms
Post by: kalem on May 09, 2008, 09:41:04 PM
We have just had a huge thunderstorm, really really hard loud rain, thunder crashing and really bright lightning, this mad dopey dog of mine cried and cried to go out, gave in and opened the door, she ran round and round the garden completely fascinated with her face in the air, got absolutely soaked

Eventually got her in she is now dripping wet, panting with excitement and watching it out of the window (mad or what!)  :005:

Anybody elses Cocker done this, or am i the only one with a thunderstorm freak  :005: :005:

Ozzy has only experienced a mild thunderstorm. Whilst he mainly slept through it, he looked up - completely unfazed - and drifted off again.  :005:

My Badger wont go out if it is raining, if he is really desperate for the loo and its raining he goes right by the back door, whichever it is he wants.  If he thinks he can hold it he wont even attempt to get his feet wet  :005:

Not bothered by the noise of the thunder though and never has been, or fireworks.  My mum and dads dog goes and hides in the wardrobe but Badger has never ever bothered, he just carries on as normal.  He'll go out in it etc as long as its not raining.

In Germany, when Jerry was still a puppy, he used to be terrified of thunderstorms and would hide under the next table etc.

Now in the US, where the thunderstorms are actually much stronger and terrify ME at night, he sleeps right through them and doesn't even blink an eye. Strange how they change...

We had a big storm last night as well --- one minute it was all hot and still then all hell let loose as it was right overhead.

My two as ever raced around barking at it --- Roobs at one point had her head stuck out the catflap telling it off :005:

I think Pippa and Badger are reading from the same song book! She's exactly the same!

Ben used to be so scared of thunder (and fireworks) but now he's nearing 3 yrs old he's a lot braver and barks at it!  I'm glad he's not the trembling little soul any more but the barking drives us nuts  :005:

I think because cockers were used as gundogs its in their breeding so they are not afraid of loud noises or bangs :shades:

Funny you should say that!  I often walk Ben on MOD land where the rifle range is.  It's not often used but the other day they were shooting and Ben was extremely interested - head high - tail held so high it must have been painful  :005:  He really did want to investigate further!  Maybe it's in the breeding cause it certainly isn't in the training  :shades:

I am not so sure.  My friend goes on lots of shoots and he says his dogs know the difference between gunshots and fireworks.  His are ok with one and frightened to death with the other :005:  Kali is terrified of thunder.

Me neither - I think they are more likely to be responsive to training to the gun, but I don't think they are any more likely to be fearless of loud noises without training....I know plenty of gundogs who will destroy doors/walls etc through fear/stress during a storm :-\

Romey does not bother with thunder or fireworks unless nobody is paying him any attention then suddenly he decides it bothers him and will run around the house barking but as soon as you start playing again it's totally forgotten no matter how loud the noise  ::)

My last cocker, Sophie, was very nervous with other people and dogs but loved thunderstorms and fireworks.  She used to sit outside watching the rockets going up and loved being held up at the window to watch the lightening and listen to the thunder.

Ellie, on the other hand, is a very confident cocker as regards other people and dogs, but is frightened of thunderstorms and fireworks!
