Title: Should we pay deposit before Viewing?
Post by: northwest1965 on May 17, 2008, 08:54:58 AM
We've found a breeder and puppies were born yesterday. My question is, that they want the deposit before we view. Is this standard practice. i know when i bought my previous dogs we paid at time of viewing.

I definitely wouldn't do this. You hear all too often of people being ripped off.
Just out of interest where did you find the breeder? I wouldn't have thought that a reputable breeder would even consider asking you to do this.
Please anyone with more knowledge correct me if I'm wrong.

A big NO!! You might not like the pup, or have concerns about breeder / it's mum.

Thats what I thought, have read lots of other ads and its deposit when you choose the pup. I've had a photo. I've emailed them and will await their response. Thanks

No definitely not!! I'm not that keen on deposits anyway (as a breeder) but you should never expect to pay one before you've even met the breeder or their dogs. Please be careful of advertised litters - the ads that always say "deposit secures"  always sound to me like they will let pups go to anyone who pays the deposit regardless of who they are (reputable breeders will not do that)

Would you pay a deposit on a car before you had seen it?

I would  definately say no. That deposit is committing you to have a pup and for her to sell you one (which clearly they are happy to do) but for you it's an awfully big risk to take. Pups cost a huge amount these days and reputable breeders will be looking to ensure that all relevant health checks have been done, that pups are as healthy as can be, that pedigrees are compatible and that mother and pups were treated and fed as well as they could and that any prospective buyers are suitable for their pups. You have no idea of any of this and you have never even seen the mother, living conditions, health check records or breeder so until you have, no money should change hands.
I also prefer not to take deposits but do like to see all the prospective family members at least once whilst the bitch is still pregnant if possible but definately a couple of times after birth as it all helps to build up a picture of how well the pup and new family will do together.
I'd walk away and continue your search.

Again No!!

Also you shouldn't even be able to see the pups for quite a while, if they were just born unfortunately there isn't even any guarantee that they will all be available when the time comes to take them home for various reasons.

Heh heh..... er no, don't do that. I've only ever been asked for or paid a deposit once I've seen the pups (which shouldn't be any earlier than 4 weeks) and chosen one. Tell her you've spoken to a lot of reputable breeders who have advised you not to too, that ought to take the wind out of her sails a little.  ::)

I had a family come to see my last litter who had been ripped off by a 'breeder' who did exactly that, asked for £200 deposit when the litter was 4 days old to secure their pup , which they paid, when they went to the view the litter it was obvious they were a puppy farmer, so decided not to go ahead with the pup, this 'breeder' would not refund their deposit!!   >:D

From your user name it would suggest that you are from my neck of the woods, where (losely) is this "breeder" ??

Please take all this advice, as recently purchasing a pup from a breeder who was only interested in lining her pocket, and now were paying the price.  Take your time and choose a good breeder pleeeeease.  We've had nothing but lies and health problems with Charley and the breeder is not one bit interested now she has the money in her pocket.  Lets put these people out of business!!  >:( >:( >:(

absolutely not ... sounds iffy to me ... not unusual to be asked for a deposit after you have viewed and made up your mind to reserve the puppy (and get a receipt) ... is the breeder registered with the kennel club?  ;)
