Bailey is 17.5 (dont know whether its kilo s or pounds) ph34r ph34r
Anyway he is quite long in the body and his back is below my knee height.
What weight should the average working cocker be? He has just been clipped for summer and I have noticed that his ribs can be felt quite clearly. When he lays down you can see them very slightly but not when hes just standing up.
What weight is your cockers? and what is a healthy weight for them to be. He is almost 2 year old by the way ;)

Meg (My black and white show type) is 14 months and 10.5 kg, Molly (blue roan show type) is 12 moyhs and weighs 11kg. Hope this helps
-
Jarvis is a BIG cocker - one of the biggest i've met, and weighs between 15-15.5kg i prefer him at the lower end of the scale because he has a huge rib cage and any extra weight makes his waist disappear ::) i would just judge by eye and feeling his ribs. If he has a clearly defined waist then he's fine. :D
-
Gari (show type) is 15.5kg and supposedly fat according to the vet, although I don't think he is, maybe just a tiny bit. :D
-
Lucy was weighed Friday and she was 17kg the vet said she was overweight and should be between 13 and 15 kg she is a three yr old worker, but i must admit she dosent look overweight and i can feel her ribs easily and she does have a waist :-\

My Barney is 9 months and just over 10kg, he is a dinky cocker, but he looks very healthy and the right shape
-
Ellie is 10.05kl and her shoulder height is 358mm, show type blue roan,

how tall is your dog?
a weight is fairly irrelevant and this thread will give you a huge variation in weights - unless you know the height of the dog it's difficult to assess whether he will be overweight - photos will give a better indication.
Dogs often look like they have a waist....from the side, it's looking down on their back that gives a true indication. When you feel ribs easily it should be REALLY easily, running your fingers lightly over their rib cages and you should feel fur and a very thin layer of skin/fat. It shouldn't feel more than a few mm.
My worker is 15 1/2 inches tall and 12.7 kgs - and thats fine on him ;)

Lola is 13.5kg and 16" tall
-
I can't measure Gari's height as he has a bizarre fear of measuring tapes, but I can feel his ribs easily. However he has a big roll of loose skin at his neck, I thought it was maybe just his age.

The breed standard says
Size
Height approximately: dogs: 39-41 cms (15.5-16 ins); bitches: 38-39 cms (15-15.5 ins). Weight approximately: 13-14.5 kgs (28-32 lbs).
(for show cockers)

Quincy (worker) 14 months, weighed 13.3 kg last week and is @ 40cm at the top of his shoulder.
I often think he should be mor meaty than he is, but the vet says hes fine just a fit lean dog, cause sometimes i can feel his ribs more than other times? hes not got a huge appetite either?
-
Mollie (show) weighs 10.75kg
Scoobie (show) weighs 11.2 kg
-
Ben hovers between 14-15 kilos. The vet thinks he's just right and very fit so I'm happy! He is a tall leggy worker though so a show cocker would be different.
It's the same with people - you have to take height in to the equation - I keep saying that I'm under tall not over weight!
I can also put my hands over the narrow part of the waist and my fingers meet if I stretch them enough :005:
-
Archie (worker) who is 6 months old got weighed at the vets on Friday.
He is 11.7kg and about 16 inches tall.
The vet was said that he was looking good and was a healthy weight!
-
sam (15months show type) weighs 10/11kgs and is about 14" to the shoulder :D

My mum has a lab the same, we measured her against the door frame (like a kid!) then measured upto the felt tip mark when Wendy was around to see the tape measure. I think the tape measure thing was started by a bad experience at the vets, and she remembers being prodded and measured.

Charlie, who is 3 and show type weighed in at a tiny 9.4 kg last week. Little cocker with a BIG attitude :005:
-
I also have a little dinky one. Lillie is show type, two years old and weighs 8.5kg :D
-
Tia is 2 years old and is a tall 3/4 worker at 17". She weighed 13.5kg last time we weighed her and I think she looks just right :D
-
Barney is 11.5kg. He recently went up to 13.2kg in two weeks when his food was changed and he looked too porky then.
I've witnessed something with Barney which surprised me. Barney was BARF fed and was always around 11.5kg and he was fine at that, had just enough fat on his ribs. For health reasons the vet wanted me to give dry food ago which I reluctantly agreed to. After he'd put on that weight, mentioned above, I cut back the dry food a bit and he went back to 11.5kg. However he feels too thin on his ribs, there isn't very much flesh there at all. This confirms that its not about what they weigh, the same dog fed two different diets has been just right at 11.5kg and too thin at 11.5kg.

I agree it's not all about weight, muscle weighs more than fat anyway doesnt it? Mine are about 14kg and 15kg (I think, but they are both at the vets on Weds so I will find out then) and they look fine to me! My step-dad says they are overweight but his worker is rather thin (he is a really fussy eater and tbh looks like a whippet!!) so in comparison it's hard to look normal haha. I can feel their ribs but there is a layer of muscle under the skin and they do taper in between the ribs and hips.
I hope they arent overweight I would feel terrible, like a really bad Cocker Mummy. They vary so much and I think proportion is much more important. :-\

My boy (Black) 2 yrs is 13.5 and looks good sometimes I look at him and think could do with a bit more weight
My girl Blue) 3yrs is 12k and is on a fine line looks good only just has a waist, so I always give the bigger piece of meat/bone to him.
The vet said both are a good weight, and what do you do with these dog's hasn't seen cocker's with muscle before. :005: :005:
OH says, he has mussels like a greyhound, and she has whippet muscles
-
arnie is 17.8.vets said he is a tall cocker and very solid
-
I have one midget, Bella, who's 3 and weighs 9.8kg, and Zorro who's a bit taller but very lean and around 10-11kg I think - hasn't been weighed for a while though.
