Just wondered if I'm the only one that gets this? - when we are out walking Jerry we inevitabley end up chatting to other dog walkers and MANY of them make the same comment..it goes like this...(suck air through their teeth) a spaniel!...ooohh I bet he's a nightmare?! they never stop do they? they are supposed to be really hard work!
Obviously I then tell them that actually if Jerry has a couple of good romps through the wood and a bit of clicker training to keep him stimulated, he is actually quite calm in the house! - they then look at me doubtfully before informing me that he obviously hasnt found his feet yet and WILL be a nightmare!!!! The latest of these conversations was a 6am this morning with the owner of a VERY bouncy whippet which dives on Jerrys head every morning before literally dragging his owner off! - I just looked at her in suprise! I think she must have read my mind as she at least had the decency to look a bit embarassed at the fact that while she was saying this HER dog had its front paws on my shoulders while Jerry say nicely waiting to be fussed!
I could bore people forever and day about all the positive attributes these ickle doggies have but all most people seem to think is that they are horrendously hard work! Phew, feel better for that! thanks for reading :005:

Just agree :lol2: then a) it makes you look like a marvellous dog handler as your dog grows up to be a nice and well behaved little dog and b) it may stop people from buying them because they are cute and need less grooming than 'normal cockers' without appreciating they will have a busy, energetic working dog on their hands ph34r
-
I always get told that even though cockers are mental at least they're not as bad as springers ::)
People just like to generalise all different types of dogs. I had this comment made to me by a lady that had a terrier crossed with a pug when I aksed why she had gone for this cross she said because they are cute ::)
-
My best comment was a lady who came to view one of our rescue dogs who would never have a spaniel because they smell ph34r
I politely put her right about this, surely any dog can smell and it's more down to food, grooming etc...

Never thought of that!! I'm sure the next person to say it will only be a day or so away so will defo take this tack with them! ;)

We've had the springaling stay and I've had to crate her after a swim because she HONKS when she's wet - none of the cockers I know do, Jarv has a faint wet dog smell but this takes the biscuit .... she's fed what he is, and she has been in the river every day with Jarv and I've been brushing her (and her ears are clean and thornit-ed)
It's just a really strong wet dog odour....REALLY strong....

Well, while these silly people don't want spaniels, there is more for us. :005:

Helen, this is the 3rd post of yours i've read in the past 15 minutes that has made me laugh my head off!!! My kids are wondering what I'm doing!

oops - means I'm on here too much ph34r ph34r have a good excuse, have had a really frustrating day and have given myself an hour off ::) or more.... :005:

No it doesnt! it just means you have the same silly sense of humour as me! - theres no hope I tell ye!

When I take Bertie (10 month Blue Roan) for a walk, other dog walkers all seem to have an opinion about spaniels (some good, some not so good)! I listen and, mostly, ignore everything they say.
I have learnt all I know about spaniels from Cockers on Line and am totally convinced I have a perfectly normal cocker who, sometimes is a >:D and sometimes is an , somtimes he's :005:; sometimes he makes me :lol2: and sometimes he makes me :'( but all of the time I :luv: him.
The funniest thing anyone said to me was "will his ears be long?", as they dangled along the grass. Can you really take any comment seriously!!
-
We've had soooo many people say the same to us not just since we got Mills, but also when we had decided on a cocker! OH's parents have had them for 20 years so knew what they were all about, but everyone else we spoke to in work, or just generally all said "oh, they're the mad ones aren't they?" !! T'ch! Everyone lumps spangles together! We've found Millie to be fab, yes she has a mad half hour, but I'm sure every pup is energy filled! My Auntie & Uncle inherited a 4 year old yorkie who can climb Snowdon and back and still be gagging for more exercise! Now thats a crazy dog! :005:
-
I get this from MY DAD!! He was against me getting a dog in the first place and every time I speak to him on the phone he has got yet ANOTHER anecdote about how much hard work cockers are, and "Mrs X down the road has a cocker and she says you must be mad getting one when you have two small children" and "Mr Y had a spaniel and he says they are very hard work"!!
Crikey - you would think I was 5 not 35! I spent months doing research and especially lurking on COL before making the decision to get one, and have been the proud owner of my pup for 5 weeks now, and love every minute of it.
Also the teacher at puppy class says Purdey is very well behaved "FOR A COCKER" !!! If cockers are such terrible dogs, why are they used as sniffer dogs, police dogs, and gun dogs! Because they are intelligent and so very eager to please, I would imagine, which is what makes them such wonderful dogs!
All hail the cocker spaniel!! :luv:
-
I used to get that all the time particularly as I owned a 'killer rage golden cocker' he wasn't a killer but absolutely exhausting to live with... so they were half right :lol2:
I don't get it at all anymore as I moved to a place where pretty much everyone owns gundogs of some sort so our conversations are more along the line of 'don't walk up by so and so as there is a dead deer up there at the moment and you'll be clearing up in the morning if she gets a sniff of it' or 'do you want to borrow my spaniel to wear yours out on Wednesday?' :Lol2: :lol2:
I'd forgotten how bad it can be though... used to drive me totally nuts!

My dad was like that aswell! He loves Jerry know though but it really upset me at first!
Its funny though because at the same time as we got Jerry one of our friends bought two labs, a friend bought a yorkshire terrior and my auntie bought a jack russell and I can honestly say we arent having any of the problems they are having!!! The labs are literally running riot! the yorkie 'crys' constantly and my auntie cant turn the lamps on at night cos the jack russell goes WILD if it sees a shadow!! Shes knocked mirrors and pictures flying jumping at the walls to 'get' the shadows!! Again, I'm not generalising about any breed but just commenting that none of them are without their challenges!! They all comment on how easy Jerry is to train, he was by far the quickest to be house trained and learn sit, stay, down etc. But, he's a cocker - so obviously he must be a nightmare!!! ::)
-
Some breeds/types have more distinctive personalities than others - and spaniels seem to evoke a love'em or hate'em reaction (the Marmite effect :lol2:)
This is one of the reasons why I tend to avoid "recommending" a cocker to a novice dog owner; as a breed they are so distinctive that they differ quite markedly from many new owners limited experience and expectations of a family dog ;)
I know a few collie people who actively dislike spaniels........I wouldn't have a collie myself, but I recognise that they have breed traits that suit some people, just not me, and accept that Spaniels are the same ;)
-
My sister got me to ring her friends sister who owned a cocker spaniel, so that she could tell me how much hard work they are, how they are prone to ear infections, how much they cost for grooming, how mad they are etc but when I spoke to her she just said she had a lovely gentle dog, who was affectionate, had cost them a bit more than they expected at the vets due to ear infections (I should really tell her about Thornits :shades:, now I come to think of it :shades:) and after speaking to her, I only wanted one more. Mind she convinced me to get a grooming set, but I've never been able to use it and I love him coming back from the groomers all lovely a couple of times a year :D - but at the end of the day, aren't all dogs okay with regular exercise and control
-
but at the end of the day, aren't all dogs okay with regular exercise and control
It is the type of control and exercise they need that varies from breed to breed (and dog to dog) - a spaniel which is trained and stimulated in a way that suits a different type/breed/group can become very stressed and confused :-\
-
I was told by a walker in the area yesterday that Dave was thick... have to say he was behaving in a very odd way at the time but he obviously went on to generalise and told me that all spaniels are stupid and all Weimaraners are 'impossible to deal with'... I laughed and walked off he was a bit right :lol2: :D

-
I get it all the time >:( when Im out walking mine. Mine do act quite mental though when they are out. ;) but my usual answer is 'I wouldnt have another breed of dog ever'! :luv:
-
I know this story too. My Dad is also always giving it "blurry spaniels, I wouldn't have another" (he has a gawjuss springer and 3 labs who he actively prefers ::) ) and "why don't you get rid of him (Milo) and I'll find you a good dog" (following one of Milo's dissappearing acts back in Feb and him dancing like a dollally dog on the end of his lead as he was over excited).. all of which is based on the fact that spaniels arent like labradors. Now theres a turn up for the books. Bless him, he's a funny man.
I agree with Cob-web they do seem to provoke the marmite effect...

Spaniels have special kind of intelligence that just confuse certain types of people :lol2:

We seem to have been quite lucky that none of my family had preconceptions of cockers. Both my aunty and grandad always had springer - grandads were trained gun dogs, my aunties latest one is lovely but a bit loony...
Jasmine is also probably more highly strung than Bracken as well, so she seems calm in comparison :005:
Most people we meet comment more on Brackens colouring than the type of dog that she is. Around here there are loads of gund dog types so maybe people are more used to cockers...
The vets we have always been good with her and have never given us negative comments.
-
Yep, agree with Cobweb about the marmite affect.
The comments we get are of one extreme or the other - never anything in the middle. We meet some lovely people regularly on our walks who adore Merry but have also met some silly people who make totally tactless comments ::)
I even had negative comments at puppy training about him being a spaniel (needless to say, haven't been back!).
I also get it from my Dad (why is more hurtful then??). My Dad's never been a big fan of dogs (but my sister does have 2 Boston Terriers and my Mum's got 2 labs and he likes all of those) and we don't get on too well but when I told him we were getting a cocker he looked like I'd gone mad and gave me a lecture about what a big mistake I was making!
He's only met Merry the once, has avoided our house like the plague since we got him and Merry isn't welcome at his house!
It's funny isn't it? I really wonder why such a gorgeous breed of dog divides people so much?
We wouldn't change him for the world and whenever I see a gorgeous spangle out I always make a beeline to say hello :luv:

This is a really sad story! Its like someone not accepting one of your children!
-
I think its great that every tars spaniels with this negativity. It means those of us who know the truth can have more all to ourselves...
-
I know, that's exactly how it felt!
I am totally soppy with Merry and when he met him I said 'say hello to Grandad' and Merry went over all waggy tail and wanting to lick him and my Dad just wanted him away from him and yet he lets my sister's Bosties go to sleep on his lap and snore for Britain and he just thinks they're cute! >:D
I have asked him why he hates spangles and he said an old girlfriend had one and he was forever trying to stop other dogs attacking it. I did point out it was hardly the poor dogs fault if other dogs were attacking him though!
My Dad is a bit of a strange creature though and we've never really got on too well so I shouldn't have been too surprised.
Anyway my dear, sorry for kind of hijacking your thread! It just touched a nerve because I totally know what you mean. I know everybody makes generalisations about things but we get the 'ooh crazy spaniel' thing a lot. Yes, Merry can be a loon but that's one of the things I love about him because he makes us laugh so much and he's so loving.
Has anyone got any good replies for people who make the silly generalisations?
-
All we can do is display our fine spaniels to their fullest advantage and keep telling everyone how great they are. Some people will always have favourite breeds and for lots of us that's cockers :luv:
It doesn't seem very fair of your dad just to reject your little bundle because he is a spaniel... But trust me he is the one missing out ;)
-
we were told we were mad to get a cocker as out first working dog and that he would be impossible to train, destroy our house and be a lunatic. Jacks 7mths old and im really proud of him. hes really well behaved when out, only thing hes chewed is OH phone (his fault for leaving it out) and is calm in the house. People now say im lucky to have a well behaved spaniel, nothing to do with the two walks a day mental stimulation and games we play with him then ;)
i think alot of people dont understand spaniels. Jack is stubborn and i have to come up with different ways of teaching him things through games and con him into thinking hes doing what he wants to do. you have to see things from the dogs point of view and keep it fun for them and change your approach if something isnt working.
im glad our first working dog is a spaniel so we have nothing to compare him to.
theres a man we see occasionally when were out and he thinks hes a dog expert and has been expecting us to fail from the start. A few days ago we were in the same field when a man came through with 6 dogs! all 8 dogs were running round playing together and this man looked at me with a big smile on his face and told me i would never get Jack back now. I just smiled and when it was time to go i set off walking and whistled jack and he followed me.i could still hear this guy trying to get his dog back about 10mins later

:005: :005: Good one Jack!!
I had a weird one this week.
I was at puppy training classes and the teacher asked if I had seen that Send in the Dogs programme about the working spaniel. I said I had and she said "Well now you know what you are dealing with" as if that was a NEGATIVE about the dogs. If anything I thought it showed what wonderful creatures they are.
Purdey went on to make me very proud (despite being the youngest puppy by far) by being the only one who could do a Sit, Stand, Down and Stay, and not only that, she did it all in a linked sequence for just one treat! The teacher was amazed! :005:

Yeah that programme just made me MORE proud to be a cocker owner!! how weird?!...Jerry only went to one training class as to be honest the one we went to was a bit of a sham and they wanted us to have a half check on him for the week after! so we asked for our money back! (he is signed up to a very reputable one now which starts in September) but in the one that we did attend, he too was by far the youngest there, he was the only one that hadnt been going for weeks and he was the only one who followed instructions!!! - everyone including the rubbish instructor was amazed by him!!! - so yeah - thats what we are dealing with ::)

Hi guys,
Had a good one this weekend and just had to share it with you.
We were out walking Merry when a woman walked past with a dalmatian and called over "I bet that springer's totally stupid. We used to have one and we used to call it amoeba". ::)
I mean what do you say to that?! a. he's a cocker b. he's very smart and c. how rude are you?!
I was so shocked I just didn't say anything and she carried on walking with a smug look on her face.
Your original post, Jerryberry, sprang to mind and I just thought that all these people's attitudes say more about them than they ever do about the dogs.
At least we love and appreciate them and the more silly people there are, the more lovely spangles there are for us ;)
-
How rude!
-
:o That is shocking!!
The only stupid one is her, if she cant tell a springer from a cocker!!
And dalmations are hardly likely to win any competitions for brains, are they?
-
a friend of a friend trains springers, when i said i was getting a working cocker he said it will drive you to destraction they aren't like springers. he went on to relay a time when he had a cocker which drove him mad, his parting words they are all mad to highly strung and they aren't that easy to train. do you not want a nice springer. >:D
nop i love my little cocker he is nuts he has his own little ways but i love em and he is my first spaniel. my point to this friend was do you get a class room full of kids the same they all have there own differences.
this was the same friend who told me a border collie don't get a border collie they will destroy your house bark all of the time they don't like other dogs they are very head strong. yip sheba was all of these but a complete joy to train so quick on the up take it was unreal and his face when she was about 12 months and she could do send away and would do sit down etc to hand signals. fuse is comming along but he is such a happy little boy i am so glad that i own two A.S.B.O dogs
-
I come from good crofting stock.. ph34r up here we all have collies and we all have spaniels! :luv:
apparantly a long time ago early 1900s or late 1800s they used to put their collie to a spaniel to get one dog that did both jobs retrieve and work stock! cant think that would have been very successful but you never know, anyway my spaniel Liath as im sure ive told you all before, can help me at lambing time. the collie I had as a teenager I taught to flush and retrieve and she was excellent at finding sheep buried in the snowdrifts,
I think as humans we all have preferences to some breeds just as we do to colours garden styles jewellary, you name it. If we were all the same we would be boring, yes it hurts our feelings when folk babble on what we know isnt correct about our spaniels but all breeds get it. for instance collies arent robotic or emotionless. ( which Ive been told in the past!) I dont know any like that and ive had them all my life. and my lot are croft collies . they love football swimming chasing tennisballs, playing games their tails wag and they smile like any other dog. any working dog in a pet home may have problems as they are intelligent and if left to get bored will make their own fun.
it speads into the horse world too.. "oh I wouldnt have a shetland they are far too grumpy and hard to train" ( heard at show the other day!) :005: or "little kickers and biters" :005:
-
b) it may stop people from buying them because they are cute and need less grooming than 'normal cockers' without appreciating they will have a busy, energetic working dog on their hands ph34r
I agree --- mind you I do also think some of us don't realise how much work and attention we put into our dogs but that may be because we do it without thinking and don't see them as a chore like some do ;)
I always err on the side of caution of some people wanting cockers because they look cute. I would rather people were realistic though about having a cocker or any dog. I do think though some people really shouldn't have dogs at all (that's with my rescue hat on).
-
One of my reasons was fostering was to experience some different breeds, they all have their differences and some are right for us and our lifestyle and some aren't...
I just don't see why people have to be rude and force their opionions on others, but that's just life...

Ha, just had to add to this thread!! A few weeks ago i was walking through the fields with Tyler when i saw two alsations (spelling!) in the distance. The women who were walking them got into a panic that we were heading towards them so i very quickly got Tyler back on his lead (notice he returned to me from off lead!!!). Anyway i stood, with tyler sat at my heel until the women had these dogs on their leads and then i proceeded to walk past with tyler (in the 'close' position). These alsations were barking and howling as we walked past, but i heard the little girl who was with them shout...oooh how cute i want one!! One woman replied 'he's a field spaniel (???!!!), its not fair to keep them, they're too hyperactive. I just started at her....in disbelief! Here's my seven month old dog, walking to hell, ignoring your pretty loopy, untrained dogs and you have the nerve to day that?!? and get his breed wrong??! oh how i chuckled!! :005:

Exactly!!!!! This is how I felt with the woman with the whippet! It was going mad...pulling her the length of the woods, diving on me and Jerry, while Jerry sat there waiting to be fussed...but Jerry was the mad one??!! I actually bumped into a friend of mine who Ive not seen for a while on Sunday while I was seeking out new walks for Jerry - she was walking her two dogs, an older one and a pup they looked down right miserable!!! Just plodding along, she looked fed up to be walking them and her little girl was moaning about missing CBeebies...she looked at me and said "You must be mad!" I looked at my daughters and said "what? having two kids? - god yeah I know, nightmare!" she looked a bit dumb struck and we waltzed off. I looked back a few minutes later and thought, do you know what, Jerry is a bit of a loon at times but I know who is enjoying their walk more!! :luv: :luv: :luv:

and wrong breed too - unless you DO have a field spaniel and not a working cocker? (if so I am insanely jealous as I adore field spaniels :luv: :luv:)
-
Nah, definitely a cocker! He has the stubborness of a field spaniel though (uh oh now here i am generalising about a breed!!!) :005: :005: :005:
I think all dogs, no matter whet their breed have a tendency to be hyper, loopy, crazy, stubborn, good, trained, obedient etc...just like us humans, it depends what mood they're in!
