Post by: biscuit on July 20, 2008, 12:56:59 AM
Anyone on here fed their dog on Harringtons.  Ingredients seem OK.  Has anyone any views.

Haven't used it, but took a look on line, and it does seem a good quality kibble...  :D

Anyone else got any views.  Ingrediants look OK.  Only thing putting me off is the fact that its next to Bakers in Asda and Tesco, and the price seems low  £3.30 for 2kg.

Took the plunge, bought a pack.

Molly's only had a few bits of it but  loves it, but then she loves everything.  Kibble is very small, but must be a similar size to Wafcol Salmon and Potato - but I did post on here that Wafcol Chicken and Corn (which shes on at moment) the kibble seemed huge.

Lynne

Could you report back please with frequency of poo and smell (I see it contains Yucca to limit smell) and any change in behaviour etc? The dog not you!

After reading your post I went to Tesco and looked at the Harringtons packets, it seems to be selling well but they only had 2.5Kg bags. I see from their website it comes in 5Kg as well.

Presuming the 5Kg bag is slightly cheaper than 2 x 2.5Kg bags it would put it in the same price range as Autarky, Chudleys, CSJ  all the foods I am looking at.

I see it's sold in Asda as well as Tesco and the foods I am considering are mostly online and I begrudge paying for Delivery.

Correction to last post, it should be £3.30 for a 2Kg bag not 2.5 and I see that the 5Kg bags will be available soon direct from Harringtons.

The feeding chart suggests 65-180g for 3-10Kg dog and 180-360g for 10-20Kg dog with 10% extra for working dog. This seems to compare favourably with the other brands I have been looking at.

I see it contains Ash 8.5%. And does anyone have any idea what "digest" would mean as an ingredient?

I see from the website that they seem to have been around for years. I have never heard of it before. Has it been a local product up to now? Anyone heard of it before?

Not one I have heard of before, but to be honest until I found COL there were many others I had not heard of either - so you lives and you learns I guess, dunno about the digest content either.

Is the Ash content something to worry about? I see that some of the food in the Burns range has 9%.

Having just done a google search it appears that lots of dog foods contain poultry digest, I think it's a polite way of describing guts unless anyone knows any better?  No different to humans eating sausages I guess.

Hi Vista

I'll report back in a couple of months on the Harringtons.  We have about 3 weeks supply of the Wafcol left and at the moment shes on 2parts wafcol 1 part harringtons.  She seems OK.  No probs with poops, still going 3 times a day, sometimes a bit "Mr Whippy"  ::) (Sorry)  But that could be the weather, shes also had an anti b injection and is on anti inflamtories at the moment (wet excema - see other post) so may be that could affect poops.

Behaviour wise, shes fine - not bouncing off the walls.  Kibble is not multi coloured, just didn't realise what digest was, sounds terrible.  If this food doesnt suit, we may try Skinners as that was the other I was going to get, having tried their free samples, but this seems harder to get than Wafcol.

Skinners is another brand I have been considering but is the most expensive of my selection. Ideally I am looking for a food I can get locally and I have a mole valley farmers shop near me who do stock Skinners and it is £26.99 for 15kg.

Have you considered Chudleys? I printed off 22 pages of info from their website today and it's another good food in that mid price range.

Hi folks - especially Vista

Molly is doing well on Harringtons (Lamb).  No probs with behaviour.  Poops ok.  In Tesco's today they had reduced to half price £1.60 (think). Main thing is, Molly loves it and no smelly breath.  Just hope they keep stocking it, hope they havent reduced it to get rid of it.

I emailed Harringtons when this thread started and have received no reply, I tried calling their helpline and the number is not recognised. Hope they are not about to pull the plug because it looked to be the highest quality dry food available in supermarkets.

Mine are on skinners 'duck and rice' - but very interested in this. I've compare the analysis of both harringtons and skinners and not much difference at all.

Might check it out - thanks biscuit!!!!!!

Title: Harringtons Dog Food - trying this too
Post by: tmcd on August 22, 2008, 04:59:00 PM
I am currently trying out Ted on this kibble too - Lamb and Rice - he really enjoys all food so I will monitor and see if there is any effects....either +ve or -ve to be honest. But I agree with all the comments made it appears to be good middle quality food, in these times of the credit crunch we all can do with a little help ::)

Oh and I found this in ASDA in 2Kg bags on special offer @ £1.65.....BARGAIN :shades:

Still no reply from the company to my email and the phone number shown on their website is never answered.

I might ask my local Asda if they are selling Harrington's cheap because it's an end of line product and they won't be selling it for very much longer?

Seems strange that both asda and tesco have reduced it to £1.65.  Hope its not end of line.

"Digest"  is poor quality leftovers of a mammal.

Yep I feed Lems on Harringtons, He is on a part raw diet and has Harringtons for Tea, the Lamb and Rice and he is absolutely perfect on it, shinny coat, lovely teeth, too much plenty of energy poops are fine, I think its a really good food, Asda and Tesco have certain rights to sell it, and Asda are now stocking the larger bags aswell  :D

I had no trouble contacting Harringtons by email and they were so helpful with the information I had asked for and emailed me within 24 hours, and assured me that Asda and Tesco will always stock this food, I tried several foods and the Boy was never keen, but he does like this one and has been on it for about 4-5 months  :D

I researched it and read about it in the paper. I thought the contents were ok. It is a small family run business and has deals with only certain supermarkets. I get it from Tescos or Waitrose, but I saw it in asda last week for the first time, in a larger bag. Rufus has the turkey and rice for breakfast. He hates Burns,  and always has, whatever type I have bought and wasn't fussed about JWB. He has nature diet for tea. Harringtons is eaten straight away. His poo is regular and I never have runny poo. His anal glands have never needed attention. I also use oral care instead of nature diet sometimes. His coat is shiny and healthy. His behavioural issues are restricted to recall, so I do not think I can blame his food. Also, he hardly ever passes wind now! So I would recommend it, but all cockers are different. It isn't expensive either.

I have just got a couple of bags of this from Tesco for Orin and was a bit concerned as like you say it was form Tesco and next to the Bakers etc and Orin is normally on JWB or burns etc or wainwrights as they have No e numbers no additives and no preservatives.  cardboard aas my OH says.

however he has eaten it up, no smells, no change in behaviour, a little bit more energy maybe but then he has just got over a bad lip fold infection so poss a bit relived to get tht over with.  sleeping same and poos the same.

looks good and good price but we dont have an Asda near us for the bigger bags.  it smells nice too.

will keep an eye on this thread an post if any change in anything.

At first I was impressed with Harringtons (I had to buy some as i ran out on a Tuesday night and had to rush out to buy some food for them) but towards the end of the bag they both got very dry and crumbly poos

I have been feeding Harringtons for a few months now.  Roxy was on JWB but Harringtons seemed to be good quality for a fraction of the price. I was paying £6 odd of JWB and Harringtons is £2.89 for same size bag and I can get it with my weekly shop so its much easier.

I haven't noticed any changes in Roxy at all, certianly not behaviour or coat, if anything her coat may be softer and shinier!

The only thing I have noted and not sure if it is a problem or not is that her poo is quite hard now.  We rotate between the lamb and the turkey and it is better on the turkey. With the lamb it gets very hard.  I still give her JWB pouches as a topper from time to time and she has tinned mackrell also from time to time with the kibble, this makes the poo better!

I'm happy with it though and will continue to feed it.

Not noticed it on offer though. If it is that would be good!!
