Grace was x rayed this morning for a limp that has not reacted to anti inflammation drugs...only to be told she had a bone tumour in her front leg. We had to decide there and then and agreed to the amuptation (I've sinced been reasearching and this is the best way of saving her life to prevent it from spreading). So now she is having her first night away from home minus her leg, hopefully she will be home tomorrow.
Has anyone else been through this ordeal, does anyone have experience of a 3 legged dog? Is there any advice that people could give us to accommodate the change at home and out and about?
I'm trying to be as philisophical as possible but emotions are running pretty high.
-
One of my childhood collies had 3 legs and he got around no problems at all. They really do adapt so well that I don't actually think you need to change anything. One thing I will say though is do watch her weight and try and keep her as slim as possible so that her legs aren't taking on any extra strain.

agree with Jay - she will adjust to this much easier than you think :luv: :luv:
Thinking of you all, you've made the best decision but I know it's an incredibly hard one :-\ :luv: :luv: :luv:
-
Sorry got no advise but lots of love to you all :luv:
-
It really is amazing how they learn to manage with three legs. I cant imagine how it must feel for you though but its the best thing to do. Loads of luck it goes smoothly.
-
I can only agree with what the others have said, Grace should adapt really well but what a horrible decision to have to make. I hope she makes a speedy recovery :luv:
-
Yes our old border collie was hit by a car when she was only a puppy and had to have one of her back legs amputated. It's was a traumatic time not only for the dog but us as well. It it a front or back leg that has been removed. It's much easier for them to recover if its a front as it's easier for them to learn to balance. The back will take a bit more time as it's the power leg and also balancing for toileting. It can be a bit of a shock at first but they recover well and soon learn to cope. You may have to have a towel or something under the dog to help her to learn to walk to start with until she learns to balance again.
My thoughts go out to you :-* the early days are the hardest but longterm most people in the park didn't even notice our dog only had 3 legs she still ran so quick :lol2:
Edited - I've just realised you've already said it was a front leg, which means she will learn to adapt much quicker :D
-
Yes. We had Heidi our 6 year old rescue springer for a matter of months before a huge tumour was discovered in her hind leg. Like you we hesitated at first then finally decided that she deserved a chance. Because of the site of the tumour her entire leg had to come off right up to the hip. The vet did a write up in the local paper about her because it was so unusual and she told us later that it was her first amputation :o (we are still with her eight years later, she is a fab vet :luv: ).
After Heidi came round from the anasthetic, the vet wrapped a towel round Heidi's middle and held the two ends up to support her, so that she could go out for a wee. Heidi had other ideas and hopped off leaving both vet and towel behind :005: .
Once she had got the anasthetic out of her system and had healed a bit (as with any op. she was a bit whingy for a few days and we slept downstairs with her) she was absolutely fine and never looked back. She did have a couple of tumbles early on as we have steps in and out, but picked herself up straight away and carried on regardless. We did use the towel method for the first week or two, especially up and down steps until she decided she didn't need us. Offlead walks continued as per usual although we were careful not to overdo it as we didn't want to put undue strain on her remaining hind leg, so we avoided uneven ground as much as we could. We made sure her weight remained stable too.
TBH I think Grace will be absolutely fine. Dogs take life as it comes and don't do much 'if only' type of thinking AFAIK.
Hope everything goes well. I am sure you have done the right thing for her :D :luv: .
-
Thank you for all your advice and support and so quick!
We are just wandering around the house like lost souls and Will wont leave our sides. Got lots of thoughts going around in my head. It is her front leg so perhaps she will not be as badly affected as I fear.
I'll keep you posted when she gets home tommorrow.
-
Years ago, I had a Skye :luv: called Jess, who had a hind leg amputated after a tumour was discovered in her foot, she seemed to accept it really well, although as has been said, a hind leg is worse than a front, she coped amazingly, however we discovered after a few months that the cancer had spread and had to have her pts :'( which was devastating after all she had endured.
These days I'm sure that it will have been discovered earlier and Grace will make a full recovery ;)
Sending positive healing thoughts to you, Grace and your family :luv: :-*
-
No advice, but hugs to you all :luv: :-*
-
Aaaaw, poor Grace. Big hugs to you and her, I hope she makes a fast recovery. :-*
-
I have no advice other than to say I have seen quite a few dogs with three legs and they seem to manage extremely well.
I am so sorry this has happened to Grace. Lots of healing thoughts to Grace and love to you all.
-
I have no advice - but big {{hugs}} to you all :luv:
Healing thoughts for Grace :luv: :-*
-
Poor Grace :'( hope all goes well
(((( hugs to you both)))))

I have a three legged cat....?!? But not the advise you were looking for, the lovely Jay, Happydog, Marblemolly and Jann have already given you their experiences which i am sure will help you no end :D
I have seen many dogs at the surgery have this surgery (mainly greyhounds) and you have by far made the right decision for Grace even though i am very sure that this would have been very tough for you and your family....
Love and healling thoughts the Grace and you all .....here's to a speedy recovery :luv:
-
No advice just healing thoughts :'( :-*

I can only agree with what the others have said, Grace should adapt really well but what a horrible decision to have to make. I hope she makes a speedy recovery :luv:
My thoughts exactly :luv:
-
Love and best wishes to you all and a speedy recovery for Grace.
-
Sorry I have no advice, but thought you would need extra loving thoughts along with kisses & hugs - sorry you are going through this it must be really tough :-\
-
I have a three legged cat....?!? But not the advise you were looking for, the lovely Jay, Happydog, Marblemolly and Jann have already given you their experiences which i am sure will help you no end :D
I have one armed OH ....?!? :lol2: I asked for his expert advice and he said 'She'll get used to it, it'll take a while but she'll get used to it"
I think he has a point. As the others have said they are resilliant, adaptable, tenacious. :D :D
I don't want you to think i'm being insensitive by being light-hearted but I bet in no time at all she'll be tearing around like normal and tumor free and you'll be so happy that it was 'just a leg'.
I know it must be a horrible time right now and there will be recovery but you'll still have your Grace and she'll be pain free and happy when she is healed, that's a pretty good deal :luv: :luv:
-
I have also known 2 dogs who've had a leg amputated, one was the back leg and one was the front but they both adapted. One was running around like a lunatic and keeping up with the other dogs it played with.
I'd just reinforce what Jay has said and keep the weight down, better being a bit underweight than over weight as she'll be able to stay independent for longer.
I had a rabbit that had to have her back leg amputated when she was young and she coped very well with that.
-
Firstly - big hugs to you all.
No personal experience, but a local weimeraner (sp?) called Buster had one of his back legs off a year or so ago - noone has told Buster he only has 3 legs! He still tears about like a madman!
-
Again, no advice but wishing Grace a speedy recovery and a healthy future :luv:
-
Well we are sat on the sofa with our three legged dog! We picked her up at lunchtime only to be met by a wagging, hoppng little black bundle of joy, she made straight for the door as if to say 'get me out of here'!!
Anyway a short journey home, a drink of water and a poo and a short stumble up the steps and she was sparked out on the sofa. We have moved the foot stool to the sofa so she can get up to her normal position.
Thank you to everyone for the support and advice, it has been a very tough 24 hours, but so relieved to get her back. Just praying now that there is no spread of the tumours to anywhere else. God it has been difficult!!! But hopefully over the worst of it!!!!!
Thank you everyone!!!!!!!!!!
-
So glad she is home with you :luv:
Me thinks a certain little dog will be getting spoilt rotten :luv:
Hope you are ok too after all the stress. :-*
-
Glad you have Grace back, hoping for positive results. Bet she's running round in no time. Hugs to you both.

What great news...brave Grace and brave you :luv:
-
Glad Grace is home safe and sound with you :luv: :luv: they really do amaze you with their resilience don't they. I guess its because they don't have all the emotional and self conscious stuff to get through. She will be so happy just to be home where she belongs and to know how much she is loved - after all thats all most cockers want :luv:
sending you all hugs and can't wait to hear how Grace is getting on

So glad Grace is home and snuggled up on the sofa. As others have said, I'm sure she'll adapt really well. Sending her lots of gentle hugs. :luv: :luv: :luv:

so pleased Grace is home and doing so well :luv: :luv:
You must all be so relieved she is already coping so well - it's incredible how well they adapt, and I agree with Ben's mum - they're not emotionally or pyschologically wired like we are and just get on with it :luv: :luv:
-
I'm glad she's home and coping well :luv:
Me too :luv: :luv:
-
I've seen loads of amputees working in a vets, and they do really well usually - it's easier if it's a front, and also keep an eye on weight, that's vital.
Sounds like she's got the best support already in you, let us know how she gets on. :luv:
-
I missed this thread - what an ordeal :'( I hope your are all coping well :luv:
How is Grace today?
-
Back from a trip to London and OH taken the day off work (I'm going to work from home tomorrow) and Grace continues to get back on her feet (so to speak). Still so diificult to watch her struggling, you constantly want to help her but we are letting her find her own way of doing things and so far so good. The other hound is giving her a wide berth and there has been a bit of grumbling between them (very uncommon!!!). I suspect that as she used to be the bossy one, she is now in a weakened state and he isn't sure where he stands - anyway hopefully when she is out of pain and the stiches are removed she will be much more comfortable.
Still so impressed by how she has been able to cope, thanks to everyone for the helpful websites to visit and all the kind thoughts and best wishes. Just planning now how we can rearrange the house for her to get access all areas. Buying something to raise the bowls up tomorrow to make it easier for her to eat and probably some new rugs for the wooden floors to give her a bit more grip!!!
-
So glad she is OK, I have been thinking of her as I go about my day to day life :luv:
-
glad she's doing well :luv: :luv:
-
Been back to the vets this afternoon and so far so good! Grace bobbed out to the car and was keen on trying to leap in but needed a bit of help.
Anyway the vet is pleased with progress to date...pain patch has come off and we've agreed to get additional Omega-3 and glucosamine to help support her other systems. Have to say the vets have been really good and have been really happy to sit and talk about how we can do what we can without trying to soft soap us of what the long term outlook might be.
Anyway she had a little walk up the road and was clearly happy to be out and about a bit so we'll have the same again tomorrow so she doesn't give up on life - at this rate the tennis ball will be out and about next week.
Feeling much more positive today and looking forward to the weekend!
-
Brilliant news :luv:
-
So pleased things are getting better :luv: It must be so hard for you all, especially Grace, would be so nice if they could understand why.
Enjoy the weekend

What a beautiful girl :luv:
She's coping brilliantly, and the wound is very neat and tidy :luv:
sending your amazing girl lots of love, she's a star :luv:

That's great that she is doing so well. When her coat grows again it's will be surprising how much it masks that fact the leg is missing.

My Daisy has a deformed front foot which causes her problems and there is a chance that she may have to have her front leg amputated, so am interested to hear how you are getting on. So far Daisy is managing with her problem, but I know that when her leg is really playing up and she won't walk on it at all it does'nt stop her doing all the usual things like jumping up and down on the sofa and tearing up and down the stairs ::) :D so I'm sure Grace will be running around really soon ;)
Sending lots of healing hugs for your brave baby x

Hi Suzysu, thanks for asking, just to update you on Grace's progress so far. It has been difficult but she continues to recovery slowly, she is clearly uncomfortable at times and has a whimper but she is eating pretty well and managing to get around. We have wooden floors so are looking at what we can put down to help her get around and keep her grip, oh and making sure her pads are trimmed so help with the slipping. She has had a couple of little walks but they exhaust her quite quickly.Oh and we moved things around to allow her to take steps up to things like the sofa and fitted a stair gate for fear of her falling if she tried the stairs beforre she really got her balance.
I think it also depends on what her personality is like, Grace is a proper trooper unlike our other cocker who being a boy is a complete wimp when things go wrong!!!!
I hope that Daisy manages to stay attached and it isn't too painful...best of luck with everything :luv:
Let me know how you get on and if you need any advice give me a shout!
-
Good to read your update on Grace, marin_uk. I was wondering how she was faring.
When do the stitches come out, or are they dissolving ones?
-
Stiches are coming out tomorrow...thank goodness! She still seems down in the dumps a bit, although we have laid loads of new rugs down to give her something to grip on (her back legs were skidding around a bit).
Other than that she is slowly getting better, perhaps we hoped for miracles and I was starting to worry...a few questions for the vet tomorrow, she is still a bit whimpery but I hope it is just the stiches pulling.
I'll try and update and hopefully she'll be bounding around!!!!!
-
Oh bless her.
I am so sorry I missed this thread. She is such a pretty girl. I am sure she will get used to it soon. But I do think you are right to look at your flooring. It's hard enough with four legs isn't it?
I am sure that her leg has been painful for a while so she has probably got used to not using it all that much anyway. That must help her get used to the three legged life. I bet she is very glad to get rid of that pain too.
-

Will send lots of healing thoughts for your brave baby and a (((big hug))) for you too. Thank you so much for your offer of help that is really sweet of you :luv:
-
only just seen this thread too- hope the stitches coming out tomorrow helps gracie further on the way to a pain-free recovery. :)
i just wanted to add that i worked at a stables which had a 3 legged staffie, also an amputee because of cancer. i first knew her about a year after the op and you honestly couldn't tell any difference between her and the other dogs. apart from a bit of a hop, she charged about like a loon and was one very happy doglet. :)
-
She looks lovely - what a brave girl. Just a thought ref slipping paws. When we were in the Lake District recently I saw some little non-slip dog booties in one walking shop. They were a ridiculous price but they are designed to stop dogs slipping on ice or on wet slimy rocks. Don't know if they, or something similar might help indoors? Does anyone have experience of these?

I've only just caught up with this thread. Grace looks wonderful :luv: so glad she seems to be healing and coping so well. :luv:
-
I hope you got on ok with the stitches coming out today.
I had a thought, I wonder if Grace feels a bit strange and whimpers because to her it may feel that the leg is still there (same as human amputee's experience)?
Also whilst checking on a rescue site I saw this dog, and hope you will be encouraged by how well it is coping.
http://www.stokenchurchdogrescue.co.uk/dogs/185
It was the comments of her running round the paddock and pulling on the lead. :o :luv:
I hope I haven't upset or offended you, as you are doing all you can for Grace and I'm sure in no time at all she will be back to her bright and happy self. :luv:
-
Thank you everyone!!!...again.
Well the stitches are out and she is clearly feeling more comfortable. From chatting with the vet yesterday she seemed to think that the whimpering may be stress related, as she has never been in kennels she may just feel a bit wound up when she is left on her own and so is whimping a bit when we get in. She is def still feeling a bit sore, so the vet has given us some additional tablets to make her feel more comfortable.
We've ordered a ruffharness tonight to help us help her up stairs and when walking. We had a quick walk on the field and she coped magnificently! so until we get the results of the biopsy we'll keep pur fingers crossed, there is still a chance it might not be cancerous.
I'll try and get a picture sorted for the weekend to track her progress! She'll be tearing around soon, the new rugs are already helping her get around and build her confidence!
A massive thank you for all your words of support..it really has helped to be able to off load along with all the advice.
-
Glad she is doing so well - there'll be no stopping her once she is all healed up :luv:
I saw this in the pet shop today - wonder if it might help her on your slippy floors

I hope Grace is doing well. Bless her heart.
I wish you all the best.

Aww, leaky eyes reading this. So glad Grace is doing well. I think she's allowed to feel a little bit down and whimpery, she has just lost a leg. And I imagine you're feeling a bit emotionally frazzled as well. But it sounds like you're all coping fantastically and I wish you all the best, it won't be long before Grace's coat will have grown back, you'll all have adapted and life gets back to normal :luv: .
-
How's Grace doing Marin ?
-
Hi everyone,
Grace is still doing well, the wound is healing nicely and her coat is growing back.
She sleeps upstairs with us and has been carried up and down, only the other morning she had got down off the bed and when I opened the door hopped her way to the stairs and before I got chance to stop her she was at the bottom! I'm not going to let her do it all the time but it was fantastic to see her doing it. She also had a little run around in the park at the weekend although she gets worn out quickly she enjoyed having a roll around in the grass.
Still waiting for the results from the vets, should be any day now. And her new ruffharness arrived at the weekend so we are off this weekend to Wales for my sister's 40th, so fingers crossed she will cope fine in her new harness.
Suzysu - have you got any news of your little one??
-
Glad she is doing ok, her muscels will soon strengthen up to compensate :D fingers crossed for the results.
I'm sure the harness will come in handy for the car as well, we found with Gwyn that she lost her balance a lot in the early days in the car when breaking a tad hard or taking a sharp corner. She was always a dog that wanted to see out of the window, but eventually she learnt she had to lay down.
-
Awww thats great Marin :D what a clever brave girl :luv: I hope she goes from strength to strength ..have a lovely weekend ;)
Thanks for asking about Daisy, she is fine thank you, she's been quite good recently...the summer is her worst time, when the ground is hard. At the moment we manage by staying off hard ground and not walking her too far...she hates going for a walk anyway would rather laze on the sofa :005:
-
Hi everyone
Been ages since I had a chance to log on and download some pictures.
Grace is doing very well, beyond our wildest dreams - zipping up and down the stairs if you dont get chance to grab her and carry her up. She changed after week four and a run around on the beach she seemed to switch and become her old self again!! Still no news from the vets so no wiser at the moment!!!!!
Anyway I have taken some up to date pictures to show her still enjoying life!

That's so good that she is enjoying herself.
Our old dog could out run my OH on 3 legs, hate to think how quick she would have been on 4 :005:

I was only mentioning Grace to my parents at the weekend, and that she seemed to be coping with it all really well.

Hi - just posted on another thread about my late boy Jaffa who had a front leg amputated aged 10 due to cancer -he coped brill - was told he'll never manage to jump on your bed etc but day after op vet phoned me to say can you collect him, he's being political and wants to go home (they knew him very well) so he came home a day or 2 early complete with chest drain, bounced through dog door and threw himself in the pond and I had to pick him out incase water backfilled his drain, and then hopped through to my bed - the same one that he would never manage to get on again!! Nothing stopped him, no one noticed at first he was an amputee as he was so agile. Its maybe not a decision I would make in the same circumstances for each of my dogs but it was the right one for him and I had another 4.5 years with him under another disease took him...What I did find was as the years went by, his one front leg tended to centre itself underneath him more and his digits in his paw spread a bit, and as his upper arm was removed just leaving the shoulder (which was brilliant as he could roll himself neatly when lying), he had a 'phantom limb' and the shoulder would still move as if the limb was there.
He was incredible and Im sure Grace will be too!!

Just thought I would take a few minutes to update you all after all your support last year.
Despite initially thinking that Grace was really bouncing back, she developed a reaction to the internal stitches and deemed to be in alot of discomfort. The vets were concerned that she may have hurt her back but could not be specific so we were referred to some specialists in Chester and an MRI scan (cost a whopping £1600!! - thank the lord for petplan)...
anyway she has spent a couple of weeks on Tramadol and Meloxin - the tramadol completely knocked her out so she has spent the last couple of weeks comatosed! anyway she seems to have woken up and she seems to be pulling through again, back to the vets on friday night so hopefully they will only have good news!!
Suzy su - have you had any news on Daisy?

I'm sorry to hear baby Grace has been poorly since you posted this originally, but lovely to hear she's on the mend

Have just read through this thread, poor Grace, sorry she isn’t doing so well at the moment. Hoping the vet has good news for you :luv: :-*
Not surprised she was knocked out by the tramadol, I take it and it’s horrible :P

Thanks for updating us. I had been wondering how she was getting on.
she developed a reaction to the internal stitches and deemed to be in alot of discomfort.
When our springer Heidi was spayed, several of the 'dissolvable' internal stitches failed to dissolve, once they worked their way to the surface and were cut and removed all was well. Was it a similar problem for Grace?

Sorry to hear Grace isn't too well, everything crossed that she is soon her bouncy self and that her life becomes happy again. Lots of hugs and cuddles to you all, especially to your beautiful, brave girly, love Heather xxx

So sorry Grace is not very well, really hope that she feels a lot better very soon.

Oh poor love. It seems such a shame that this happened so long after the op when she seemed to be doing so well.
Hope she bounces back again really well.

I was only thinking about Grace the other day, sorry she has been poorly :'(
