Hi everyone,
Thank you all for enquiring about Cleo during January. She's absolutely fine!
This Thursday will be 10 weeks since she came off the drip and we were told we would have her for just a few days. It just shows that she was not ready to give up and altho she may have kidney problems, that little heart of hers is very strong!
Here's a pic of her just looking pretty!

She has been to the groomers since this piccie and is not such a fluff ball anymore!
So, not only is she eating well and full of energy, she no longer coughs or gags as she was previously doing. I believe this was to do with the rising acid levels, so it would suggest she is not troubled by this anymore either. She is loving the Hills K/D canned food, and I am just introducing the Hills dried to mix in as I can't seem to satisfy her appetite. The vet has said this could help fill her up more so we will see.
We sometimes just look at her in amazement as she is a lot livelier than she was pre illness? We are over the moon with her progress and have in no way taken for granted her better health.
I have not posted for so long as I had to dash home to the north and didn't have the laptop, but I have read your previous posts and it's so lovely that you have all had thoughts of Cleo.

Have the vets diagnosed a particular condition the reason I ask is Jasper has kidney problems because of his Lupus and with the combination of diet and a "a few" drugs is coping well atm so here's hoping Cleo copes for a long time to come.

. Have the vets diagnosed a particular condition the reason I ask is Jasper has kidney problems because of his Lupus and with the combination of diet and a "a few" drugs is coping well atm so here's hoping Cleo copes for a long time to come.
I have asked the vet what could have shown such bad blood results and she said all she could think of is that combined with some kidney failure she may have had gastroenteritis, hence the diarrhoea and sickness. Once that cleared, she reverted back to normal i.e. still with kidney problems but not advanced to the degree that was imagined. She then could not predict what might happen and when, so we are keeping her on the renal diet and she has a quarter of her Ranitidine tablet each day, and as I say , is thriving!!!

Hi everyone!
I haven't posted for a while but still pop onto COL to read about all your lovely pupsters regularly.
I could never forget all your wonderful comments about Cleo and your kind wishes for her and wanted to let you know that Cleo left us on Saturday.
She was diagnosed with kidney failure last November, when we were told she would only last a couple of days. We have had five truly wonderful stolen months!
Although I thought I was prepared, you never are really, are you?
Wednesday she was out romping through the woods and splodging in the river. Thursday, she stopped eating and lay very quiet. Friday she went on a drip to try to rehydrate her. We brought her home that night and she was very poorly. Not moving apart from her back legs quivering. Wouldn't eat, just a few sips of water. I noticed her rubbing her mouth at one point, and when I checked, her gums were bleeding. The vet told me this was related to her kidney problem- mouth ulcers! I have never felt more useless and utterly frustrated in not being able to help her!
The next morning the vet told us she was rapidly going downhill. Nothing could be done!
We cuddled her to the end! Telling her how much we loved her and kissing that beautiful domed head!
The vet was lovely with her. As she administered the shot, she whispered "It's all ok now beautiful Cleo. Go and play with Biff!" (Biff was our boy we lost last year who she adored!) I just looked at the vet as she had said what I was thinking... she just smiled knowingly!
We know it was her time but the decision is so difficult even though you want to end the suffering.
Thank you again for all your well wishes.
Although this is the worst part, we have had 12 and a half years of joy and love from our girl.
You will be sorely missed Cleo darling, we love you and will have huge cuddles at Rainbow Bridge.

So sorry to hear you have lost Cleo :'( Having lost our lovely Lily to kidney failure a couple of years ago, I know how horrible a disease it is and like you say, although you know the end is coming, you're never really prepared for it when it comes. So glad you had those extra 5 months with Cleo though and that you had such a kind vet to help her on her way at the end - that makes such a difference. Sweet dreams Cleo :luv:

I'm so sorry, I too have loved, nursed and lost a dog to chronic kidney failure. The vet used to say I don't know how she is still with us, you must have such a strong bond and I think the same should be said about Cleo, she loved you so much she fought to the end.

I do understand what you say about never being prepared. Especially after all this time with the miracle months you were given. It must have been tempting to hope that the vets had got it all wrong.
What a kind and caring vet you have though. That brought a tear to my eyes.
