I know it's all part of the development of the healthy pup ph34r but Pepper has recently discovered the joy of humping. Everything. Especially my legs as I try to move through the house carrying hot liquids....
It's just pure lust for life rather lust for my leg, I know, but just wondered what the correct way of dealing with it is? Obviously don't want to tell him off for it as it's just a part of growing up, but should I stand still? Push him off? Distract him?
At the moment, I just extricate myself (with difficulty) and then head for the sofa (legs up and out of danger's way).... ;)

i dont allow any of my dogs to hump anything.... humping is a form of dominance, its what pups do to find out who is going to be the top dog so to speak. the top dog is allowed to hump ;) your little pepper is telling you that he is top dog over you!
if one of my pups do it i tell take them off and tell them a stern 'NO'! they soon get the message and the humping stops. if you dont do anything about it it will just keep happening IMO
my jack who is 14 weeks old tomorrow tried it on a bit when he first came but we havent had any humping for weeks now. :D

Darcey likes to hump your arm if you tickle her belly, she also has a particular love for the dustpan and brush. I also just extricate myself and tell her a gentle no. I also tend to giggle, which probably doesn't really help ph34r

It sounds as if Pepper is recovering well from his ordeal :shades:.
I agree with Han, don’t really agree with the ‘dominance’ thing. It’s just natural behaviour for a puppy, Brodie’s been doing it since day one (she doesn’t do it as often though, thankfully :lol:). I’d just try to distract Pepper with toys or do as you are doing and remove yourself… give it time and I’m sure he’ll eventually give up :luv:

I think what you are doing is fine! It is part of normal growing up (boys and girls both do it, and IMO it's nothing to do with dominance...)
You could also try just diverting his attention onto something else (game of tug etc).

Dogs hump for various reasons and is perfectly normal in puppies and often triggered by hormonal changes. it is often seen when the dog is excited or after feeding. People are often mounted because their response is rewarding to the dog even if we think we are telling them off but it is certainly not trying to be top dog by doing this! It is inappropriate in the human context so should be discouraged, but in my oppinion the dog should be given a clear instruction of what to do rather than just using the word no.
What instruction does the word no Give? It is your tone of voice that interupts the behaviour and not the words you use.
I find it easier to ask my dog to sit or lie down, which gives them an instruction to perform an alternate trained behaviour.

Lately every evening Hattie brings her cuddle toy over to us and then starts humpping it, we just tell her no and remove the toy from her. Just hoping she will grow out of it.

Could be attention seeking behaviour have you thought of ignoring it rather than saying anything?

Do you mean just let her carry on humpping or take it off her without saying anything.

Try both, but see what happens if you do nothing at all for a few days. it maybe that it is not an attention seeking thing and driven by other motivation but there is only one way to find out. ;)

Guess Im way below Brie in the pecking order then as she humps my leg when shes excited.
It doesnt happen often but I am very immature and can never stop myself bursting out laughing at her ph34r

I'm also way below Douglas coz he has the occasional hump when he is worked up or worried sometimes!

Harvey doesn't really hump. He's only ever done it when he's met certain other dogs. These other dogs have been a male cocker spaniel, a old male springer spaniel, a male cav and a male american bull dog pup. He's met loads of bitches, but doesn't do this with them :huh:
What does this mean? If it's not a dominance ( ph34r) thing, then is it a weird male greeting? It's a good job I'm not going to breed him ::)

Pebble humps my leg occasionally when she is excited and we are getting ready to go out.
She also tries if I crouch down to get something out of a cupboard :005:

Hi there, glad I have seen this post. Dylan has been humping on the evening we go to heelwork to music class. When he sees me getting the props I use in class out. I usually ignore and walk away from him. I put it down to excitement.

Eric only humps occasionally but when he does it is always Lucy's head :005: Poor Lucy, I think he does it to make up for all the times that she steals his toys :005:

Its sooo embarrasing, especially as its usually OH's friends come to watch football. Of course they find it hilarious!!!

Before Sally was ours for keeps we looked after her sometimes with the ladies other bitch and they continually humped each other.....worse thing was Sally always found it easier to hump her head so we had to watch quite quite a full on display of girl on girl while she was trying to find her comfiest spot....also highly mature in this house as we never stopped it and just used to laugh ph34r

Oh dear. I must confess. As a complete dog novice, the first time Rufus pulled his quilt cushion out of his crate, carefully rolled it up using muzzle and paw, closely to resemble the female canine anatomy, I was appalled. However, when I then heard whimpers from the hall and found (sorry mods) that he had reached satisfaction and was staring pathetically at this long thing protruding from his body, I was horrified. My son, who knows all about horses, assured me that this was a part of Rufus's body with a distinct purpose. Any way, since he was castrated, we do not get the whole performance, but after dinner he likes to get amorous with his quilt. As he has never humped legs, or other dogs, I have not interfered. Should I? His complete incompetence is demonstrated every time his friend Bonnie is on heat she goads him into trying to perform. The first time he got on the wrong end. Now he just sniffs, has a think, and walks away.

Having only had a girlie before, when we got Dylie (aged 16 weeks) we noticed him trying to hump Morgan (8 weeks). My Mum :luv: was mortified and demanded I speak to Tom our vet as there was something wrong with him :005:
Needless to say, Dylan and Morgan are now 11yrs old and my Mum has never mentioned it since :shades:

Dennis humps occasionally , anything big and fluffy will get him going :005: I was quite disgusted if im honest to find everytime he disappeared upstairs he'd go to my sons room and hump his favourite teddy >:D and he was banned from our bedroom as he kept trying it on with me while i was in bed :o :lol2:
He dosnt hump legs or anything and i find a firm no usually stops him :D

Roxy has never humped a person or anything other than her big toys, They have to have a large body, head and rope type legs!! She has had a few like this, the latest being a reindeer from xmas!! We thought she might stop after she was spayed but she hasn't!
I have to say we find it quite amusing and have always just let her get on with it!! She is very determined sometimes and grips him tight with a paw so she can thrust away!! ph34r :005:
Of course the first thing she does when we have visitors is grab Mr Reindeer!!!!!
I guess he knows were he is in the pecking order!! :lol2:

Coco likes to hump my 5yo daughter (just the right height for it i suppose!) and the worst part about it is my daughter liked it ph34r She thought that Coco was giving her extra good hugs :005:
I would just tell Coco "off" and she seems to have got the message now and i havent seen her do it for a few weeks now.
Coco has always been a bit of a humper - she used to hump her biggest teddy when she was a pup :005:

Roly is very good, and I've only seen him do it to one dog. I don't think he would dare try it with Misha. However, Misha has a fondness for the fleece throw on the sofa, but usually an "Ah Misha" stops her. Haven't seen her do it in ages.

Barney was never a humper and Jet generally only tried it on with my two female dogs but they soon put him in his place :005:
Now Finn our Newfie pups loves humping and as he is going to be enormous it is quite a scary thought! ph34r

Coco's also been pinching and chewing toys etc - day one of the holidays and i'm stressed alredy!! >:( Who'd have kids & dogs? :huh:
