It should say on the bottle. It may vary a bit by brand, but it's usually around 4 tabs, and they can even have it hourly if needed so you really can;t hurt them or overdose them

How is Alfie's leg today  :luv:

Not good  :'( I am a bit worried now tbh  :-\ I was oncall Wednesday so in work all day and night, when I got home he was lame on his front left leg  OH had been with them alone for the first time since Lenny come home and cant recall Alf doing anything in particular to cause it.  ::) He seemed to be able to weight bear on it by early evening yesterday but as the night went on it got bad again  :'( I am in work now, OH in charge of the boys again  ::) Would you give more arnica and wait and see or would you take him to vets? I am feeling very guilty for leaving him with a useless dad, but should be able to get out of here in an hour or so.  :-\

he may have pulled/strained something  :-\  or could have something in his paw.

I would pop him to the vet if it's not any better  :D

The arnica will bring out any bruising/swelling quickly and helps speed up healing so it could well be doing it's job.

Poor little fella, see how he goes today and if he's in pain still tomorrow he may need an anti-inflam injection to bring the swelling/heat down and make him more comfy  :luv: :luv:

I know what you'll be doing over easter - rug hunting  :shades: ;)

We took Alf and Lenny around to the IL's at tea time and Alfie by then couldnt weight bear atall  :'( We took him straight to the vets and they think it may be a soft tissue injury. However because he is on steroids at the moment for this 'allergy' he couldnt administer an antiinflammatory  :-\ He suspects a carpel injury  :'( So he has had an opiate injection and a lovely shocking pink compression dressing applied. We are stopping the steroids and he is to go back tomorrow evening to be reassessed and given an anti inflammatory if required. He is feeling very sorry for himself quite rightly  :luv: Lots of TLC this weekend now for my boy  :luv:

Awww poor Alfie.....at least you know what it is  ;) Biba has had a soft tissue injury on her back...a week of no walks and anti-inflammatories and she was soon back to normal...she did it chasing a ball  ::)
Hope he feels better soon  :-*

Aww, I hope he feels better in himself tomorrow  :-* :luv:

Do you think he's feeling sorry for himself because the vet has him in a 'pink' bandage.  It can't do anything in the manly stakes with Lenny seeing him dressed up as a girlie :005:

hope he's feeling better tomorrow - didn't realise he was still on steroids for the allergy  :-\

Steroids stop the itching but don't solve the actual allergy - have they run allergy tests?  I would be tempted to contact a homeopathic vet on that one - they seem to get to the bottom of allergies really well  ;)

Hope is poorly leg is feeling better tomorrow, bless him  :luv: :luv: :luv:

Helen the vet suggested we waited to do allergy tests until he was 2  :-\ the steroids being a one off to stop the possible cycle of itching etc. We were not happy tbh starting the steroids as we know only too well the complications with them but were at a loss at what else to do really as he was raw in his groin area  :'( That does seem to have settled now, we are trying our own process of elimination but that could take forever couldnt it  :-\

He also has had severe diawotsits for nearly two days now too  :'( The poor baby doesnt know whats happening, if I am honest I am worried sick about him  :'(

How long has he been on the batch of steroids?

8 days now I think, 1 a day for the first week then every other day for the 2nd week. So we had just started tailoring it down to the 1 tablet  every two days. His 'bumps' are much better now due to him not scratching them so I hope to god thats it now  :-\ We have eliminated beef from his diet over the last few days to see if any more lesions occur in that time  He is due back to see the vet regarding this on Thursday next week anyway. I just hate pumping them with drugs  :-\

yeh I know what you mean about the drugs, it's scary isn't it  :-\ The break from the steroids will be telling for him - what's he fed on at the moment?

I was wondering if the dia-wotsit was a reaction to the steroids, but he's been on them a fair while for that to happen so I don't think it's that - you never know, it may be a stress reaction to Lenny (just the change of dynamics, am sure he's fine but his normality has been altered so he may be adjusting to that  ;) )

If you can get your hands on any manuka honey based antiseptic cream this may help with any remaining lesions.

give Alfie a :bigarmhug: from me  :luv: :luv: :luv: :luv:

Thankyou  :luv:

He is fed on AG at the moment but one meal is barf, either beef, chicken or fish. He has been spotted pinching Lennys food  ::) so we have to stand moving bowls as they try to swap meals  :005: He is on RC but by golly I am getting pupster off that, the smell of little lennys poops are awful  ph34r

aaah - his diawotsit could be as a result of food stealing from his little brother too  :shades: :005:

sorry Patsy, I'm all over this thread asking you questions  ::)

Does your vet think the allergy could be food related?  If he does I would do elimination, but the first thing I would eliminate would be chicken - raw and also if it's in the kibble change to AG lamb and rice  ;)   Chicken seems to be the culprit in a lot of food allergies in dogs  (raw chicken used to go STRAIGHT through Jarvis, we re-introduced it when he was around 2 very gradually and he's fine on it now...).

Hope you can sort him out, and tell him the pink bandage is not affecting his street cred with me  :luv: :luv: :luv:

No, I am glad you are asking, it makes me think then  :005: He is on AG lamb and rice currently, tbh the vets hasnt indicated anything really as the culprit. Probably due to a little red herring i.e that he flared up whilst we were having building work and a kitchen installed, when that finished he seemed to clear up. Unfortunatly he flared up again a couple of weeks ago, which has made us reconsider the possible cause.  :-\ He does get a lot of chicken  ;) I will stop that asap then and see  :shades:

If he looks brighter tomorrow I will ruin his street cred with a photo of it  :005:

Patsy - ps: you might find the neem oil helps the inflamed skin - I've used it on Dax in the groin area when he was itching last year when the harvest mites were about - used the neem 40 shampoo first then the oil - I also used it on Cruze's nose recently when he damaged his nose leather and it went pink ... it healed up and went black again within a week so I pop a bit on once a week to keep it supple  ;) drawback with a white dog is its bright yellow so use sparingly - a little goes a long way - it is very good ointment though - I've heard honey is also good as livercake suggests - didn't know you could get mekuti honey based ointment though  ;)  Have pm'd you  ;)

He is still a poorly boy  :'( He is taking Metacam for his leg which he is still limping badly on, and last night had severe diawotsits again  :-\ No activity up to now today so fingers crossed. We had to stop the steroids due to all of this and he now has fresh lesions  :'( One big circle we seem to be going in.  :-\

Trying to keep Alf still is becoming stressful now as pupster just wants to play with his bruv, I may have to resort to seperating them for a few days. I did try with the puppy pen yesterday but the howling from the two got a bit much  ph34r I will just have to persevere with it today I think.  :-\

Thanks for asking about him  :-*

I feel the same way about steroids and most drugs really!  I think from experience Homeopathic vets have a slightly wider view than conventional vets and are prepared to investigate further.  Would definitely be good to at least have a second opinion  ;)

Are the lesions irritating him?

Yes he is itching like mad  :-\ I bought Dermacton cream which a natural based skin cream by PetNat and I have to say it is fantastic once applied, it stops the itching almost staight away  :shades: Obviously it doesnt prevent them though, so we defo need to get to the route of the problem. Has the vet prescribed an antihistamine for Alfie?   Charley has an allergy and was prescribed Piriton.  I have used Boots Allergy Relief Tablets (Chlorphenamine Maleate) for him that are the same as Piriton, but cheaper.

I would definitely try piriton (or equiv) but check whether he can take this in conjunction with the metacam  ;)
