Title: Orange and white question
Post by: Mr Darcy on April 15, 2009, 11:08:25 AM
Sorry if this is a stupid question but is an orange roan the same as an orange and white. Looking at the pics i can't see the difference, got to admit its the nose freckles that i have fallen in love with. Do these disappear as the dog gets older or stay forever.  ph34r (Lexi's beautiful pics have a lot to answer for) :D

I think it's the same thing. I love orange roan colour. I'm sure other people will be able to tell you more about it.

Orange and white has solid areas of white as opposed to orange roan having the roan spots all over. ;)

As with any roan an orange roan will have flecks of orange throughout the white bits, an orange and white will have defined orange and white patches. I personally think it is more difficult to tell whether an orange is an and white or a roan because the orange can be so light. I'm not sure about the freckles disappearing. Eric still has his freckles but he is a light blue roan.

Thankyou, I think i will be looking for an orange and white. To be honest i know i will fall in love with any puppy i go to look at whatever the colour. The temprement is the most  important to me so i will be looking for a reputable breeder, before i go and look at any puppies. Thankyou again.

William is an orange roan with quite a lot of pure white as well as orange patches, a few roan patches and a freckly face. I was told that when they are little puppies, before the roan starts developing, you should look at their pads. If they are just pink the puppy will be orange and white, if they are pink and black the puppy will be roan. I don't know if that's true though!

Thankyou, I think he's very beautiful, but I might be just a bit prejudiced!

There's some photos already on here, including "William in the snow" posted on the particolours photo board on 3rd Feb. 2009 and on the shows board "William the agility dog" posted 27th December 2008.

Katie and Henry are orange roan, but Henry is a stronger orange whereas Katie is quite pale.
They have the came granny (who is orange roan) but Henry looks like his dad (OR)

We have three orange & whites (technically orange & white ticked) and all still have their nose freckles. If you have the COL calendar, one of them (Jimmy) is on the front cover.

Jane S., how do you define orange and white ticked please? William has quite large areas of pure white, some clearly defined orange patches and a few light roan patches. His face is freckled. Is he roan or ticked?

Orange & white tickeds don't have any roan areas - just ticking/small flecks of orange on their white bits (they usually also have foot pads with a small amount of pink still remaining, although sometimes you have to look hard to find the pink :D) It's not always easy though to distinguish between roaning and ticking as one person's light roan is another's ticking :005:

Orange roan has the freckles  ;) My orange roan boy has very deep orange and white patches - his freckles are on his face and neck plus fronts of his legs but the rest of the body is solid patches - he's not a pale orange - its a rich deep orange - they seem to vary  ;)

Here's a pic when he was 12 months old - I've stripped out those hairy legs since then  :005:

I am getting really excited now...............we get our little orange and white roan in the first week of May, if all is ok.

Looking at the pictures we have of Ollie (now 6 weeks old), he looks so different to the ones you have been showing.  I know he is just a baby.....but, it is lovely to see how he will develop..... Oooooooh thank you.
