Anal glands can be a common problem - they should empty each time the dog has a bowel movement, but sometimes the poo is too soft to do this (and for some dogs, they are just prone to problems whatever you do).

To try to help you need to do things to firm up the poo - so adding bran, weetabix etc to his food can help.  Raw chicken wings (fed seperate from his main meals) can also help.

What is he fed on?  Some brands seem to produce sloppier poos than others!  ;)

My Basil had alot of anal gland trouble and the vet said he could keep having them squeezed out, but if they got infected he could go under anaesthetic and have them flushed out, or as he didn't really need them he could have an operation to remove them. I decided to have this done, and am so glad I did, the operation didn't seem to worry him at all, and he was a different dog after it. He is so much happier, He used to be so grumpy and bad tempered at times, thinking about it, I suppose its uderstandable, I know I would be if I had a constant niggling in my backside. Its certainly an option I'd recommend to anyone whose pet suffers from this problem  Hope this helps a bit
