I posted last week about Gari not being "right" and the vet thought he had a sore stomach. Today he started to cry and stagger, then collapsed, his gums and eyes went white. I got him straight to the vet where he was given pain relief and fluids, but he was in such terrible pain that the vet had to sedate him. His temperature was high and his breathing was rapid, although his heart rate was good. His bloods were normal, but a full blood test has been sent to the lab for testing.
The vet did an ultrasound on him, but didn't really see anything, apart from a slightly larger lobe on one side of his liver. They think he may have pancreatitis, or worse case scenario, a tumour. They have told me there may not be positive outcome for him. :'(
He is now in the out of hours vets on morphine and fluids, and they said if he deteriorates before his full blood results are back, they will open him up to see what is causing such terrible pain. :'( They will phone me in a couple of hours with an update.
I am in tears at the moment, I cannot bear the thought of losing my boy. The worst bit, apart from looking into his eyes as we were leaving him there, was hearing my big macho OH burst into tears when we got home. :'(

Jeezo Fiona, what a shock you must have got. Just as well you were there and able to get him right to the vet. Hope they get to the bottom of it quickly, and that it's not as serious as you're dreading.

The vet just phoned and said they have managed to get Gari's pain under control and he is a bit more comfortable. They will phone during the night if there is any change, but if not then I will hear from them around 8am as he will be transferred back to my vets.
I'm sorry to hear that other dogs have gone through this, can anyone tell me what it was like for them?

Fiona hope there is good news soon xxx Fred has pancreatitis (not that it seems to bother him as long as he gets his meds and we try and watch what he eats -no more footballs!) and it is manageable. I really hope Gari gets over this bout soon and that he is home with his Mum and Dad and the rest of the family terrorising workmen where he belongs as soon as posssible xxx

Hope your lad is feeling better this morning. I had a cocker a few years back who had acute pancreatitis, she was taken very ill overnight. The vet did'nt know what was wrong with her so opened her up, she phoned me to say she was sending a sample off but it did'nt look good cancer was mentioned. Later that day we got the results- acute pancreatitis. She stayed in the vets for 7 nights they kept her asleep all the time and she recovered fully and lived till she was 15.

I'm just back home from the vets. I picked Gari up this morning as there was no ambulance available, and took him to my own vets, he had a comfortable night, but was still in a lot of pain when the pain relief was wearing off. He wasn't bright on the journey, he was lying down crying every time the car moved. :'(
They are waiting for the blood results from the lab and they should be in before lunchtime. The vet wants to open him up, even if the blood result does show pancreatitis, as she said the inflammation could be caused by a tumour. I am hoping she will hold off for a day or two to see if the painkillers work before putting him through surgery that may not be necessary. If the blood results don't show anything, she is going to open him up this afternoon, and if there is a tumour he will have to be pts on the table. :'( :'( :'(
Any of you who have gone through this will know how I am feeling, and anyone who hasn't, will be able to imagine it. My heart is breaking. :'(
ETA: Babushka, just saw your post - it gives me a little bit of hope.

My brave special boy has gone. It was a tumour in his pancreas, and had spread to his liver and spleen. :'( :'( :'(
I held him as he went to sleep, looked into his eyes and told him how much I love him. He gave me a kiss on the nose. :luv:

How awful for you. :'( I am in tears typing this. :'( :'( I to have had dogs taken from me quite suddenly and I know exactly what your going through. :'( It is incredibly heart breaking. Fiona I dont know you and never knew your lovely boy but I held back from posting on this as this is what happened roughly to Benji just 2 months ago and I didnt think it would be positive to you to know that when you had so much hope still for your boy.I am in tears now as you are mourning the loss of a much loved friend and I know what that feels like losing a dog to this and the tumour that sometimes accompanies it which it did in Gari and Benjis case.Time does help although it never heals and your loss is your own personal journey.But we are all here for you.I cant stop crying now as this reopens my own journey with Benji but its good to cry and we wouldnt be human otherwise.Run free from pain Gari and say hello to Benji for me. :luv:

Heartbreaking to be with him when he went to sleep but it is the last act of love you can do for him - he would have known no fear and trusted you to do what was best for him :luv: Although it was all very sudden and shocking at least he wasn't in pain and ill for long. :-\

Fiona, I am so very, very sorry to read this.
This was the first forum I ever joined. I'm member of another couple, but rarely use them. I don't know what it is about COL, but it does something to draw you in and make you care for people and animals you have never met. It's an odd thing to be crying for someone you've never met - and for the loss of an animal that's not yours.
I'm glad that Gari is at peace now. I shall remember him barking at the workmen, wagging his tail and doing the digging up thing in the video you posted the other day.

I only wish there was some way that I could take away some of the pain you must be feeling now to make things easier for you. I read this thread earlier today, but didn't get chance to send my postive wishes at the time - oh, how guilty I now feel at not doing so.
I have a tear in my eye and a lump in my throat to read that Gari has gone. Only last week you were wishing Dylan a happy 11th b'day and asking for piccies.
Gari chose you to live with as he knew he would be loved in your home like no other would have.

Thank you everyone for all your kind words and for the lovely PMs. At the moment I am finding it so difficult to know what to say, the pain is like nothing I have ever felt before and I miss Gari so much. We keep looking around for him, he was always just beside me, behind me or on me, we were hardly ever apart. :'(
Gari was loved so much and he knew it, and he loved us in return. He was happy with the simplest of things, and if he was happy, we were happy. Rightly or wrongly, we made him the centre of our world, and apart from work, we didn't do anything that didn't involve or centre around Gari, so he has left a huge gap that can't be filled. :'(
Because he was such a wonderful dog, we are thinking of taking on another rescue Cocker soon. OH wants to, but feels it would be betraying Gari, however I feel it is because of Gari that we would be able to do it, as he showed us what it is like to be loved and to love unconditionally. :luv:
We were honoured to have Gari in our lives, and not once did I ever regret that impulse decision to bring him home from the rescue centre. I am so glad he got his new house and garden, if only for a short time, and I enjoyed watching him enjoy it. :luv: :luv:
The time ahead is going to be so difficult, especially when OH goes back to work. I spent all my time talking to Gari, asking his advice on everything, telling him our plan for the day, and most of all cuddling him, and my arms ache to cuddle him now. The house is so empty without him and my heart is broken. :'(

Ditto here... I'm aching for you, it's just the worst and there is nothing you can do accept let time help. Do try and focus on the happy memories and forget the last few days - they weren't his life, his life was his happy days with you and Stuart.
And as I said in my PM, from someone who's been there and done it, there really was no time like straight away to fill that gap for me... I kind of took a leaf out of Trev's book of high speed life when it came to that decision :lol2:. He never dwelled on bad things and bounded onto the next good bit of life so I guessed he would have wanted us to have another dog around as quickly as possible. Even my son who was 4 at the time pointed that out to us :lol: You have so much to give, so as a testament to Gari, do what's right for the both of you at whatever speed suits with, I expect, Gari's full blessing ;) :luv: :luv: :luv:

I just watched the video of him barking at the workmen again, I can't believe that so much could have happened in just a week. I am so very sad for you.

Fiona, I'm so very sorry, we all know how much Gari meant to you and your OH.
Sweetheart many of us have been where you are now and it's the worst pain :'( big hugs to you both.
I think for you to adopt another cocker who needs your special love and care would be a wonderful thing to do.
You'll know when the time is right and it will be in honour of Gari.

I know it is so heart wrenching and painful for you at the moment. I remember the day we lost Sammy, even though it is 6+ years ago now and after the shock of his sudden death there was this most awful ache to cuddle him with all my strength but of course he wasn't there with us. My OH sorted a wonderful photo & frame very shortly afterwards and this seemed to help a little with this urge that just wouldn't go away. :'(
Fiona, i hope that as time goes by, your pain starts to ease. :luv: Try to remember all the wonderful times with Gari. :luv:

Its so difficult to know when the right time for another cocker is. When I lost Indie I waited because I thought I would be betraying her memory, but in the end I wish that I hadn't, because Misha really helped me through what was an awful and lonely time (the house was so empty), and I know that Indie would have loved her as she was intended to be a playmate for her. When I first joined COL I mentioned that I had lost a dog recently and someone had replied that they were glad that I had Misha to help mend my broken heart, and thats exactly what she did.
I know that you have some wonderful memories of Gari and I feel very privileged to have been able to read about this cheeky chap. Only you will be able to decide when the time is right, but I hope you won't wait too long.

I think you are very brave Fiona to think about giving a new home to a needy dog. What a kind person you are..I think the dog you get will be vey lucky and it is the best honour you could give Gari in his memory. :luv:

Fiona the part you said about aching to hug Gari I so understand as thats what I want to do to my Benji and I so desperately miss that.
Its early days yet but I said in one of my posts a few weeks back when I lost my Benji that wanting to have another cocker is a testimony to what went before and if you and your oh are thinking of giving another cocker a loving home thats down to Gari who showed you what a wonderful thing it is to have such a dog in your lives.A huge compliment to Gari.Its understandable to think having another dog would be betraying the memory of Gari as I thought that too.But its rather been taken out of my hands as my oh has said no for now.But you can tell Gari when you next talk to him that he was such a lovely soul that you wanted to repay his memory by doing it all over again.He wont mind. ;)Take care :luv:

It was totally meant and I know my Merlin would be happy as long as I am happy as I know Gari would be with you. I am a strong believer in fate and when it is the right time everything will come together and it will just feel right. Like others have said any dog would be lucky to come and live with you and your other half. Take care of yourself and try to remember all the good times and all the joy Gari brought to your life. :-* :-*

Oh Fiona, I can't believe I'm reading this. I've not been around much recently and missed your original post, I'm sorry. My heart is breaking for you, Gari has always been one of my favourite cockers because the love you have for him always shone through in your posts. I can't imagine the pain you are feeling but I'm sure there must be some comfort in knowing that so many of us have shed tears for your lovely lad, he was such a darling boy and will be missed by all of us who loved reading about him and his antics.
Sleep tight darling Gari, you have given so many people so much fun and laughter in their lives.

When we lost our last cocker, Sophie, I felt the same as your OH, that getting another cocker was as if we were just replacing Sophie, but my OH was adament we must get another and when we got Ellie I realised that the only thing that can go anywhere near to help to take the terrible pain away of losing a beloved pet is to let another one into your heart. When I said that I could never love another dog as much as I loved Sophie, a friend said 'yes you can, you just love them differently', and it is so true.
When you feel ready to let another rescue cocker into your life, it will be a very lucky cocker.

Fiona I only know you from your posts about the lovely Gari.....all I can offer is that when we lost Ollie within a 24 hour period a lot like you....we had Annie after 5 days. Now many may disagree but a year on it was the best decision we ever made. Ollie sits in his lovely box and watches over her ....

I'm so sorry to read this Fiona. I went through the same with my Chewitt. He was poorly a week or so before xmas, but seem bright enough. Come Christmas day he was so poorly, kept being sick, and wasn't interested in his turkey. We took him to the vets on Boxing day, they kept him, operated straight away, and found tumours on his liver. They never woke hime up. I was gutted I never got to say goodbye.
I know so well how you are feeling right now, and nothing I can say will help. Just to let you know my thoughts are with you. Take care x x

I am so very sorry Fiona, but what a lucky boy Gari was to have the love of you and your OH. Your final act of kindness means he is now at peace and free of pain, he will be waiting for you at The Bridge to show you how well he is once more.

Thank you again for all of these wonderful posts and the PMs, they are continuing to help give me a little comfort. I've been going through various stages of grief, the latest being denial and have been pretending to myself that Gari is still here with us. :'(
Skyesmum and Jensam came over last night with their doggies, and it was lovely to have them here. The dogs played with Gari's toys and gave me much needed Cocker cuddles, but the house became so empty and quiet when they left. Surfer Rosa came today with her 4, and very kindly offered to let 2 of them stay over with us, so we have Eddie and Jake currently asleep here after having their dinner, and it is wonderful therapy. The only thing is Eddie looks like a much smaller Gari, which is making us feel sad, but it's also nice having a similar looking dog here. Jake is golden and very different, and a complete sweetheart too. :luv:
It's early days yet, and a very difficult time, but with all the support I am getting on here and from other friends, we will get there and one day will be able to think of Gari and smile instead of cry. :luv:

Fiona, you are so very early into the grief process.....but, as you've recognised it IS a process, and you will be able to think of Gari and smile, one day. I didn't even meet Gari and I feel really saddened by his passing, so god only knows how you two must be feeling. I am glad you're getting loads of support from people who truly understand what Gari meant to you.

Glad you are able to get some cocker therapy, there is nothing in the world like a cocker cuddle is there, and they will know you are sad right now.
I would gladly parcel Ben up and send him up to you for a cuddle, but he is such a bad lad I fear you would send him home very soon :005: so cyber cocker cuddles will have to do instead ;)

Thank you all again for the continuing support, I've also received cards, flowers and gifts, along with many messages, and it makes me so happy to know that Gari reached so many people and made them smile. he made us laugh every day. :luv:
People have told me they will miss hearing about his antics and seeing his funny pics, and I miss posting about him. I still have some pics and a video and wondered if anyone would mind me posting them? I am getting some comfort from looking at his photos and videos, but I know some people may find it upsetting and I wouldn't want that. :luv:
I can't even begin to tell you how much we miss him, but everyone on here is helping so much. :luv:

We got Gari's ashes back on Wednesday in a beautiful wooden box that was cut from a tree and looks like a bit of a tree. I'm glad to have him home again where he belongs. :luv:
OH is going to put a corner shelf up in our bedroom, so that Gari can sit there along with his collar, one of his curls and his rosette. I can post a pic if anyone wants to see it, but again, I don't want to upset anyone, however it is really lovely. :luv:

I did not know Gari as I am new to this site this week, however I wanted to send you my love and say that the little casket made out of the tree is simply beautiful. When I lost my GSD I found it very hard to deal with, she was my princess and followed me everywhere I have her casket in the drawer under my bed along with her collar that way she is still close to me. I find your pictures very moving. its a tribute to you and Gari how much you are both loved by having 26 pages worth of messages. He was a lucky boy.
