Title: Sad news for Ruby - she's now blind
Post by: PennyB on June 18, 2009, 08:10:26 PM
Ruby's eye hasn't been doing all that well - she had a 'spike' (glaucoma - so raised pressure and cloudy eye plus lots of pain) in March then another 2 weeks ago - both times I consulted with the vets at the eye hospital in Leominster and both times it recovered after a few hours. She didn't seem to recover fully from the one 2 weeks ago and while it didn't appear to be anything you could see or put your finger on I just felt something wasn't quite right and this past week she's been behaving oddly (not as confident as she usually is).

Yesterday she had another 'spike' which despite using the treatment didn't go down - last night I phoned the on-call eye vet who I've seen before and is lovely. John said that realistically there was no more treatment we could consider and I now had to weigh things up - initially I said I'd at least get more pain relief from my vet in the morning.

When I saw Steve we discussed the options and I then decided that enough was enough as she was in so much pain that he should remove her eye there and then rather than faffing around waiting to see if the treatment woudl take effect. On balance her quality of life then wasn't good and may not be while she had her eye in this state.

So Ruby is now blind.

I now also appear to have my own animal hospital (my cat Ed had an op to remove more fibrosarcoma tumour from his neck area on Tuesday in Dursley, Gloucs so after I'd left Roobs in the care of my own vet I had to hop on a train from Cardiff central to go over and pick Ed up from the referral vets and bring him home) - Ed is very happy at being back even if he now looks like ET. Roobs looks awful and is staggering around. I requested a bucket and thank goodness I did as she was trying to wipe her poorly eye on the carpet - its now filling up with blood. I have also been given a bandage and dressing just in case it bleeds tonight  - I do have my own vet nurses on speed dial though which helps

Oh bless her, your heart just goes out to them doesn't it, my cavie was almost totally blind but she seemed to manage pretty much okay, she did used to try and go through the wrong patio door sometimes and ended up just bumping herself on the glass ph34r and we noticed that if we moved furniture or had new items she would get confused but she would adapt quickly enough, I am sure that Ruby will manage admirably with you there to support her, take care and big hugs for Ruby :luv:
Its def turning out to be a bad week for COLers :'(

Oh Penny, I am so sorry.

I almost feel more for you than for Ruby as I am certain she will adapt quite well, and she must be so pleased to have so much less pain now (even the post-op pain is better than her eye would have been before the op).

All the best for the cat too.

I hope Ruby recovers from her operation quickly, poor girl  :luv:

My old boy, Josh, gradually lost his sight to cataracts in his extreme old age but adjusted well. He was quite confident in the house and garden and spent a few minutes off lead out on our walks every day, just pottering about and sniffing things. I just had to watch him closely on walks, making sure he was only off lead in safe places where the worst he could do was to bump into a shrub.

Aww Penny Im so sorry to hear about Ruby's second eye!!

I do think dogs adapt much better than their owners tho and as long as furniture isnt moved around too much they manage not to bump into too many things.

http://www.blinddogs.com/inspire.htm

Read some of the stories on here....some are very sad but also inspirational !!

With you as her mum guiding  her and helping her come to terms with it I'm sure she will running around on those welsh hills sooner rather than later  :luv:

How are the patients this morning? I hope you all had a reasonably comfortable night (http://bestsmileys.com/hugging/6.gif)

Ed is as bright as a button - he recovered better from this bout of surgery even though it was more severe (last time he didn't want to go out at all but he keeps asking to go out now and he can't for another 2 weeks so he's lording it in my bedroom)

Roobs had a bad night - she whimpered all night and had restless sleep. I slept on the sofa and she stayed in the crate all night.

Part of it may be pain and the rest feeling uncomfortable - she hasn't eaten or drunk very much and it was difficult even getting her out for a wee. She did give me a little wag this morning though which was lovely. The cats are taking the p*** though as I wasgigin her the antibiotics wrapped in smoked ham and they kept trying to get at it - something they wouldn't do normally.

Am leaving her to herself for now rather than smothering her - may sound awful but I dont want to reinforce her dilemma. I have been doing the odd bit of TTouch though to help her.

Its so sad to see her like this when at the weekend she was out camping in the Brecons with 28 other dogs having a whale of a time - I know this will happen again but its sad as it shows how quickly things can just change.

She was in a bit of pain this morning but seems fine now after her rimadyl, breakfast and cat poo fest in the yard  :o (some things never change do they ::)).

I also should've had Ed's claws clipped last week as they're like razors at the moment and while he's not a nasty cat he doesn't like the tablets (he's too picky with his food to put them on it) - there is now blood dripping all down the stairs - mine - thank goodness there's only 3 more tablets left for him.

Just been for her post-op checkup this morning. Bit of an experience for her as more traffic etc so it was quite frightenign for her as well at times. Her eye had swelled up a lot over the weekend but it gone down a bit now as some of blood has come through her nose overnight. So far its a learning curve for both of us.

I am now also sporting a jingly bell on my left boot so she has an idea of where my feet are when am walking outside (Wilf also has one on his collar when he's out).

Penny so sorry to see the sad news about Ruby  :'( but so glad that she is on the mend.give her a big hug from us please :luv:
Our little boy Merlin went blind within 2 weeks from diabetes, he adapted so well and when we were out walking he would be striding way out in front, no one seeing him would have know that he was blind, a few months later Taffy also lost his sight, but it never stopped them living life to the full, they seem to adapt so quickly, it the owners who can't, it took me a long time to come to terms with having two blind cockers.
so glad to hear that ED is on the mend also,
take care of yourself

I'm trying hard to get the image of you as a Morris dancer out of my head  :lol2:

I'm sure once the swelling eases and the pain and buster collar go Ruby will start getting on with the rest of her life and you won't be able to stop her  :luv: :luv: :luv:

Bless her little heart  :luv:  Sad to see her all swollen like that, but at least once the stitches are out and the swelling has gone down, she'll be feeling soooo much better in herself without having such a sore eye.

Was her vision impaired in that eye as well Penny, I can't remember ??

I know of another doglet who is blind and they got a cocker (from Henry and Katie's breeder - I think he is Katie's brother) and he helps the blind doglet about too.

I'm glad she has Wilf to help her, as well as your ringing boots  ;)

Hugs to all in your animal hospital (and Wilf too)  :-* :-* :-*

Most of the swelling is actually a build up of blood, which is slowly coming down by either being absorbed back into her body or down her nose :o (thankfully she hasn't shaken her head). She's back dancing for her breakfast again - so is Wilf and thank goodness I didn't have my boots on or it would be the breakfast morris dancing duo.

Not brilliant news on Ed - he's recovered his op really well considering they removed more muscle in this last op - but they only managed a narrow margin because they couldn't go any further (spine) even though they had a generous margin laterally - in his 1st op they only had narrow margins as well but in 12 weeks the tumur regrew. Fingers crossed we're lucky this time but sadly this type of cancer is well known for its aggressiveness.

Oh bless her.  :luv:  :luv:

It brings tears to my eyes thinking what she is going through - it is so unfair.

Her eye does look a lot better.

Is your jingling bell working? And is Wilf helping his sister.

Please give her a gentle squish from me  :-*  :-*

That did look very swollen and sore. I am glad it's going down bit by bit.

Gentle squishy hugs for the dear beauty.

I find it very humbling to read this thread. I'm pleased to see the swelling has gone down a bit, I hope it won't be long before Ruby is feeling much better and I also hope she adjusts well to her new way of life.

You're a fab mummy Penny. :bigarmhug:

Just let her offlead a little on the park - huge playing field bit - and she loved it - I even managed to get her to go look for a ball I'd thrown (as long as I held on to meany Wilf of course who kept nicking it off her plus he kept rushing her like he always does which she was a bit unsure of)

Still a way to go really as she was weird over her food bowl later and couldn't find it even though she'd just had her nose in it - mind you her face must ache anyway and feel quite funny

It just must take some time to get use to it.  Our first cocker had very bad sight, so we just made sure things like furniture wasn't moved about and the coffee table was taken away so the wall of death of an evening could still continue without incident  :shades:

Like others have already said Penny, you are an  to them all

Oh poor, poor Ruby  :'(  :luv:

I think I may have to PM you Penny....... Tinker should be having the same op in Sept. We're 'opting' to have it done when she's spayed (it has to be done sometime & thought this the best way to avoid another GA) but after seeing the pics. of little Ruby I'm horrified to say the least   :o   (I shouldn't of looked  ph34r )  I don't know if I could cope?.....you must be so strong ( but I realise you didn't have any other option )

Big, tender love & hugs for Ruby & for you  :luv: :luv:

While it does look bad they do recover quite quickly and its as much as you can do to stop them hurting it further, which is why she wears a buster collar (its not a huge one though so she can eat and drink with it on if necessary but I do take it off to walk her and eat her normal food) - the worst bit is when they come out the vets as its then its quite a shock but you begin to get used to it + my vet practice are very good and have been very supportive. I only let her off as I knew she was very safe and wouldn't go hurtling off - i didn't do it after her 1st op but then she had sight in one eye so had some pleasure of sight there anyway.

Its important to make sure they do take their antibiotics - my vet told me of a dog who'd had an op like this and owner couldn't get him to take them and he got an infection that went right down his muzzle so he couldn't even eat

I agree Penny, the worst moment is the first time you see her after the op. Very soon, I didn't see Tia's missing eye, if you understand me... ::) I felt shocked, but have only had to go through it once - you've done it twice, and I'm sure the second time is much worse.............. :'(
Love to you all!
