Title: Hot Doggies! How d'you cool yours down?
Post by: fizzyntiffy on July 01, 2009, 04:42:35 PM
My two don't like getting wet - both will avoid puddles etc, etc - so in this hot weather what on earth do I do??  Obviously no walkies in this heat, and they've had an ice lolly each but???

I've just surprised Tiff by dumping her in the paddling pool, and sneaked up on my dobie with a bucket of water.  It seems to have done the trick as they're both now snoozing quite happily in front of the fan  :luv:  (now I'm worrying about them getting a chill)

It's night time that's worse.  As it's been so hot I've not been putting Tiff in her crate, so she's been lying on my bed, panting so hard the mattress has been shaking  :005: :005:

Any tips for me please  :D

Soak a towel/tea towel, hang it roud their necks or put it in their bed for them to lie on. Feed ice cubes, give them a frozen face cloth to chew/lie on!!!!

There are a few threads on this on the boards just now but the basics are don't walk them in the heat of the day; make sure your walks have a water source (for drinking even if they don't swim) and/or take a bottle of cold water with you on walks to let them drink and you can pour it over them as well; home made doggy ice lollies are good warm weather treats; to cool them at home you can wet a towel, wring it out and put it on the floor for them to lie on or even drape it over their neck and back if they're really suffering; a lot of dogs will play with the water from a hose but even if they don't like it much a quick hosing down every now and then or a dousing from a watering can will keep them cool. At night keep the windows open and direct the fan at their crate. A 2 litre plastic bottle filled with water, frozen and wrapped in a towel makes a good 'cold water bottle' for their crate.
