My 4 year old male has been very listless today with a squidgy bottom and now a very swollen tummy. He had a lot of rubbish on sundat after we went to a BBQ and has had a runny tummy since but was fine yesterday and went for a good run but today he's not happy. He ate breakfast this morning but im really worried about his tummy being so hard - any advice on what it might be and can it wait until tomorrow for the vets?

If I were you I'd phone the vet and ask their advice this evening. I don't know what it might be but I'd be pretty worried about him having a swollen and hard tummy.

I would call the vets - he could have a blockage from a discarded bone or something like a corn cob which are terrible for dogs :-\

hello all
well he's been to the vets and has pancreatitis probably due to the huge amouns of pork he got fed at a hog roast we went to on saturday ( not by me i hasten to ad!) he's on antacids, painkillers, bulking agents and have to go back this afternoon for antibiotics :(
does anyone have any experience of this condition who could give me a prognosis?

I'm sorry to hear that, there are a few dogs on here who have had pancreatitis, if you do a search you will find a lot of threads - just click the 'Search' tab on the toolbar at the top of the screen, select the Health board and type in pancreatitis as the search key. It's an inflammation of the pancreas and can be a very serious and painful condition and requires careful management, the onset of an episode can be linked to diet and feeding of high-fat foods so this is something you will have to be careful about in future. If's it's a mild one off episode then he should be fine but you should avoid giving him high fat or greasy foods in future. Has the vet advised you to ensure that he's nil by mouth for today?

Yes vet said nothing today and to go back for antibiotics and painkillers later - fingers crossed he's going to be ok. I've never seen him so quiet and still. My poor boy :(

The thread on poor little Fern is a good place to start. Pancreatitis is a really vicious condition and one which Jack, our 9 year old Toffee Roan, has had on several occasions. Its caused by there being too much fat in the dogs system which the Pancreas can't deal with. If I remember rightly, its something to do with the over-production of enzymes (whereby the overload actually causes the enzymes to digest the pancreas and other bits and pieces - someone will, I'm sure, clarify on my behalf!). The symptoms are very unpleasant - vomitting, diarrohea, listlessness, very tender and swollen tummy and a great deal of discomfort all round. Poor Jack could hardly move for the pain and would stand motionless for ages as a result or slowly wander around the house as if searching for relief. As I mentioned before, he has had it on numerous occasions and can strike very, very quickly - often in a matter of minutes. One moment he's fine, the next he's suffering. Fortunately, we know what to look for so at the first sign of trouble he's off to the vet for anti-inflamatories, anti-biotics, painkillers etc. The trick is NOT to give him any fatty scraps, sweets, chocolate etc (easier said than done when the dog is a walking dustbin!!) so as to minimise the risk of him contracting it again. Hopefully you're little one will be back on his paws again soon! :blink:

Is pork bad for dogs Anna? Sorry if I sound ignorant, but I am about this. Were you meaning that he had too much, or he shouldn't really have any at all?

Pork in itself isn't bad for dogs but too much high-fat food can bring on pancreatitis (diet isn't the only cause of the condition but is certainly a major one in a lot of cases). A 'binge' of fatty cooked food will undoubtedly bring on an episode in a dog which is susceptible to the condition.

it's not only food that brings on Pancreatitus - yes do watch the diet, but steroids such as prednisolone and antibiotics are known to bring it on too... :-\
Soooooooo....tell people that they're not to feed your dog titbits, it's really not worth the potential heartache :-\

Update
hi all - well he's had antibiotics and painkillers for two days now and the vet said his tummy felt much better and he didnt seem to be any pain when she was prodding him so thats a good sign! He's still pretty depressed and listless but i think thats cos he hasnt eaten since tuesday - he's probably feeling a bit wobbly! He's going back to the vets again today for a check up and she said yesterday as long as he was no worse today he could go back on some chicken and rice. so fingers crossed because i want my bouncy annoying always having to shout at him for something ty ty back!
With regards to pork - I meant that he was probably being fed bits of crackiling and all sorts of fatty bits from the hog roast and it probably just overloaded him - never has before but i guess it only takes one straw to break the camels back!

I am so soo glad to hear he is on the mend.
Having only lost Fern to acute pancreatitis last Tuesday, I can honestly say that I have been holding my breath until you posted with this update.
I am sure you will have your bouncy boy back soon.

luckily for ty i think his case was pretty mild compared to hers ( i read your thread) and caught it very quickly. he must be feeling better he managed to growl at the postman!

I really hope your darling is better. Thank you for starting this thread because we all learn from the experience of others. When Rufus was a puppy, under 6 months, his mother was really ill with pancreatitis. Her owner warned all the people who had pups from the litter, so I have known about the fat issue, and have trained all the family. I always try to avoid fatty food, and cut visible fat off meat. I wanted to point out that other than lean breast meat, chicken does have a fair amount of fat, especially under the skin and around the under carcass so I watch for this. We were given tell tale signs to watch for by her vet, such as discomfort when moving and a kind of arched back. There are two other cockers round he who have had it badly, but both have recovered, thank goodness.
