Just got our free sample of Rabbit & Brown rice in the post and Mr Fussy Pants has scoffed it for his dinner which is a rare and wonderful sight ::)
so wondering if anyone feeds it and how their dogs are doing on it?

I'm waiting for the samples, hopefully they'll arrive tomorrow, I'm really glad Jarv liked it :D I realised the Fish4Dogs is a no go cos I wasn't looking properly when I read the ingredients the first time, it's got sodding beet fibre in it as well ::)

Oh, I was just looking at the Fish4Dogs as an option to the Luaths. :-\
Where can you get the Healthy Paws, is it an on-line one too.
-
My trainer who runs our dog training club, is against beet pulp in dog food, she says it can make some dogs hyper as its residue from the sugar industry. Is that right?

I don't know about that but I am suspicious of allergic reactions such as yeast infections and skin infections :-\
link posted above Jenny ;) they do have outlets listed on the website
Think I will get the 4 x 2 kg bags (a 15 kg bag lasts us 5 months with being 1/2 barf...)

I don't know about the hyperactivity in dogs either but the reason I don't want to use food containing beet pulp any more is because for the last few months Tilly and Rodaidh have had literally one infection after another - Tilly has had her usual yeasty ear infections plus pyoderma and Rodaidh has been getting recurrent wet eczema/hot spots which are very itchy and painful for him and are a nightmare to get rid of. They're both very 'itchy' and having spoken to the vet and a few other people, including Robbie Burns at the SKC show and the Yumega people, I think it is very possible that it is stemming from a reaction to their current food. I'm not the only one who has noticed this with AG and itchiness and skin infections either and the only way to find out is to stop using it but it's not that easy to find a good alternative!
-
Jessie has had a few ear infections too. She had some new biscuits recently, which were a good quality, but had beet pulp in them, wonder if it's any connection. >:D
-
I'm not looking to change ours as (touch wood!) they're doing well with what they're on but just wondered if they do any other varieties than rabbit?! I couldn't see any and it seems to be there usp so I'm guessing not?

no they don't...but then I guess fish4dogs are fairly limited with their flavours too ph34r :lol2:
-
Ooooh looks good and they stock it in our local pet store, Belle is on Burns at the moment and doing fine on it but if you do change to it and approve please let us know as I do like the look of the ingredients list and you never know when you may need an alternative ;)

Yes, sort of fish or fishier fish! No, the only reason I ask, and this is going to sound very very terrible so pleeeeeeease don't shout at me ph34r ph34r ph34r but I can't bare the thought of them eating bunnies ph34r ph34r There...I said it!! I'm going to get laughed out of COL!! :005: I know I know, they have the turkies in JWB and the Fish in F4D but I just can't bare the thought of the farmed bunnies. Scuttles off and hides!! ph34r
-
I have trouble finding food for Jessie as she is allergic/intolerant to lots of things....sugarbeet being one of them, soya another and believe it or not brown and white rice.... >:( She is also allergic to Pork so the Burns Hypoallergenic Pork and Potato is a no go...
So we ended up feeding her a prescription diet for ages (RC SC24) but it was so expensive and made her poo and pong lol....she is now fed Burns Fish and Maize and is doing well....
I got really excited at the healthy paws treats until I saw they contained brown rice....we struggle to find tasty healthy treats she can have!!

Nicola, I wondered if you ever tried the Burns high energy lamb and rice? I know it's got beet fibre in it but wondered if you had tried it. .I asked John Burns via e mail why the higher energy recipes Burns make including the canine active, canine extra and high energy lamb all contain beet fibre.
His reply was that when they first trialled the canine active on greyhounds at a kennel near them, they found that the hounds were having diarrhoea without the addition of the fibre the beet supplied. He then went on to say that probably most dogs could do without it being in the food but it would mean retrialling and changing all the packaging.
He also said in his e mail that allergies to beet pulp are quite rare
Interesting though as I have always been curious as to why the higher energy recipes ( 3 of them) all contain beet fibre.
-
both Nicola and I have tried burns - and our dogs not only lost interest in eating but they lost condition and got scurfy skin and dull fur.
Some kibbles, despite the theory, don't suit every dog :-\
-
Hi Helen
was it the high energy lamb recipe?
-
Hi Helen
was it the high energy lamb recipe?
that was one of the ones we tried - tried about 3 before giving up and moving onto Arden Grange ;)
-
I tried the high energy lamb Burns on a recommendation a good while back, about when I first got Rodaidh and both he and Alfie lost a heap of weight very quickly and their coats were awful so I took them off it again pronto and haven't used Burns since; apart from anything else I think it's very bland food and they didn't like eating it, even Tilly who is a gannet wasn't keen.
My lot are currently on Barking Heads lamb variety (all natural, high quality ingredients, no cheap fillers like beet, British made, no additives, no chemicals etc.), it's a good food and they like it but I've managed to get a local stockist for Healthy Paws who gave me some more samples of it last week which they all wolfed down, even picky Rodaidh. It was about the most enthusiastic I've ever seen Ro with a dry food so they'll be going onto it once they've used up the Barking Heads; I also like the idea of rabbit being the protein source in the food (just personal preference!).
Interestingly I spoke to Robbie Burns at the SKC show a few weeks ago as he had a stand there with his foods and he does not share his brother's view that allergies to beet pulp are rare :005: This really depends on who you speak to and what sources you read, it's a bit of a minefield really but personally I think it could be behind some skin and ear problems in my lot which is why I'm no longer going to use foods which contain it.
-
The reason I asked if it was the high energy lamb was that in the email reply I had from John Burns he said he'd be more than willing to offer a free trial to anyone interested in this food :D
How is the healthy paws going down?

still on AG at the moment, nearly finished the bag and will let you know ;)

I'll also update once my lot are on the Healthy Paws, they've got about 8kg of Barking Heads still to get through first! As I said though the samples went down extremely well, Rodaidh is a really picky and slow eater and I was shocked by how quickly he hoovered it up so that's got to be a good sign :shades:
-
must have posted at the same time lol
Nicola, interestingly I tried the high energy lamb Burns when it first came out and mine developed anal gland problems on it. Changed back to the normal Burns lamb and rice and all ok again, so beet pulp deffo no good for my two >:(
Glad you've found something they all enjoy. Might try this healthy paws myself :D (the dogs not me)
-
I'm not happy with the Luaths (Burns brother) that I moved to from Orijen (which I really like but I want to be able to get food locally). I've a bag of Healthy paws for puppy to try first, then I'll try the older dogs on it when I'm further down the Luaths bag I'm using now.
The shop really were struggling to decide which was better, Barking Heads or Healthy Paws, I think they thought Barking Heads is more paletable as it also contains "wet" meat :-\ Looking forward to seeing what results come out like
-
I found the worst thing with Burns was that they ate their poo afterwards ph34r

Nic, what's their poo like on the Barking Heads food? Looks like a great food from their website. Might try mine on the lamb and rice, it seems to have more meat than the healthy paws. Jess, my golden cocker gets colitis so have to be careful.

It's fine, no sloppy poo or anything although none of them are really prone to that anyway and their diet is half barf so that also affects it obviously. Overall they seem to be doing well on it but it's only been a couple of weeks.

Berriewoods now stock orijen ;)

Thanks for that Jo, still web based though and as I work, delivery is a pain, hence wanting a shop.
-
Jaspers mum why did you not like Luaths? Just curious really.

I just ask them to leave stuff outside the front door!

Just placed an online order for 4 x 2g bags of Healthy Paws for Dennis. Thought the AG was our saviour but Dennis was still getting ichy patches so hopefully the elimiation of the beet will stop help. Anyone else noticed any results yet from feeding Healthy Paws.
-
I feed Orijen which my two really like. Cloe suffers from ear infections and i thourght the fact that it was free from beetfibre may help.Do you think healthy paws would be a good alternative.
-
I think Orijen is a good kibble - and it's down to whatever suits your dog in the end ;) Despite thinking we were near the bottom of the bottomless bag of AG we're JUST about there now so will be Healthy Paw-ing next week.
-
Got Charlie on the Healthy Paws puppy now. He seems to like it and coat shinning but a bit soon to tell. Will try the older dogs soon, just need to get down the stuff thats here first.
We liked Orijen, just wanted something I could buy locally. That said, if I end up paying over the odds to buy it local, then I'll be back to ordering on-line :shades:

Molly is on Burns (pork & potato) and Blue is on Royal Canin. I would like to change them on to the same food but Molly has a really sensitive tummy. On the Burns I have noticed she has a very dull looking coat but don't know weather that is down to having pups in June or the food :-\
Does Burns pork & potato have beet pulp in it? I haven't got the bag to look at the ingredients as I store the food in a container.
It probably does - can't tell you for sure but I know Mr Burns feels there is no connection between beet pulp and allergies so that leads me to believe he could use it in his kibbles ;)
Healthy Paws update from the House of Jarv....well, we love it.
His coat is much improved, he's dropped the tiny bit of weight (about 1/2 kg) that I thought he could lose and he absolutely loves it. Stools are fine, and he's full of beans (or rabbit, as the case may be ph34r :shades:)
Just for a comparison we've had his sister Pudge Fudge staying - she's fed Bakers :shades: ph34r Upon reading the bag I found Bakers meat content is a whole 4 percent....which is in the MEATY chunks only (so in about 1 in 10 pieces of kibble ::) ). Healthy Paws is 26 percent ;)
-
I changed Indie from Burn P&P to Arden Grange Salmon and Indie's coat is lovely now, although I do add a teaspoon of salmon oil to her food. She also has a sensitive stomach but i felt she was a bit hungry on Burns and her poos were a bit too hard :lol2:

Nice to hear Jarvis is doing well on Healthy Paws, we are trying Healthy Paws and Barking Heads at the moment trying to figure which is better for Baja's tum, did you try Barking Heads Helen?
-
No I haven't tried Barking heads but I hear it's pretty good too ;)
That would be the next one if this didn't suit :D
-
I have been feeding Barking Heads for nine months now, plenty of time to see a difference. Jessie seems not to get ear infections when she is on foods that do not not contain beet pulp, Barking Heads does not contain beet pulp. She has also put weight on losing weight on the Burns. So I am really pleased with it, and will continue feeding it.
-
Monty is also on Barking Heads - we have found that he loves :D. He was originally on AG puppy but very quickly started turning his nose up at it, our trainer suggested we try BH puppy and he loved this, we have just moved on to the Lamb adult food and so far so good.
-
I have just ordered a sample of Barking Heads for my two to try - Dennis has an ear problem that won't seem to go so I'm trying to eliminate beet pulp in case it's that :-\ Currently we use Arden Grange and Naturediet, How does Barking Heads compare price wise with AG ? Roughly how much do they suggest feeding an adult of approx 12kg?
-

I usually pay about £37 for 12kg bag. Dylan is about 12kg and I feed him 140 grams per day about 3/4 of a mug, Jessie weighs just under 9kgs and I feed her 100grams a day 1/2 mug. I tried a certain amount and then tweaked it. Depends on the dog, activity exercise etc. I don't feed anyother wet food with his, but sometimes add leftover steamed veg with it.
-
My 12kg bag costs £35 and like JP I give Monty around 140g per day. I add a tiny bit of JWB wet food (only about a teaspoon) just to make it smell "good"!!! :005:
-
I found a place locally today that only had 6kg bags, which was £18.99, where do you buy the bigger bags from?
Baja is having a small amount at the moment to add to his chicken/rice as he is still having giardia problems, but so far so good
-
You can buy it on-line from stockists on the Barking Heads website,or if you ring them they will be able to tell where you can buy it locally.

Dennis has been on Healthy Paws now for around 6 weeks. He really enjoys it. His weight has dropped by around half a kilo so I'm well chuffed. His coat looks to have regained some of its shine which he lost when I had him neutered last year however he still has the odd dry patch although I think these becoming less and he is itching his ears less than before. He also enjoys the healthy paws fruit treats (only the occasional one as we are still working on his weight). And getting it on the internet works out a lot cheaper than what I was paying for AG at the pet shop.

Billy has SOS salmon oil on his food once per day and I think it's absolutely fabulous stuff. It took around 8 weeks for me to see a difference in his coat, and probably around 16weeks for me to see the final result but wow it's amasing! His coat is so much shinier and is so very very soft, he hardly gets any knots now either :D

Boysie had a chronic ear infection that wouldn't go away for over a year - in his case it's chicken that caused it - we eliminated chicken based foods (he's now on JWB lamb and veg), and it went away within a week. Just adding this as it could be another thing to consider.

Thanks for that - I might try the Barking Heads Salmon one just in case- in contains - Fresh Scottish Salmon (min 26%), Potato (min 26%), Ground Oats, Dried Salmon, (min 15%), Potato Starch, Rapeseed Oil, Salmon Oil, Minerals, Dried Tomato, Natural Seaweed, Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM, Vitamins. hopefuly that is all ok, I have to say my vet doesn't think it's food related :-\ just that some dogs are more prone to waxy/ear infections than others

My vet said the same - even suggested ear canal surgery - but he'd got to 10 without any ear problems at all ::) Mind you the same vet didn't think he had a thyroid problem because his hair wasn't falling out, but he does.
Good luck

Really wanted to give Healthy Paws a go with the girls but can't ...... contains chicken oil (Purdey's allergic to chicken :-\ )
then thought about Arden Grange/Fresh Salmon & Rice but can't.....contains chicken fat & chicken meal ?? >:(
then thought about Barking heads but can't.....Purdey allergic to at least one ingredient in each >:D
then thought I'd cracked it with Origen  Bought a trial pack at Discover Dogs.....they lurve it but no .....I find it contains
russet potatoes >:D >:D (Purdeys allergic to that too!!)
They're on Burns- fish & brown rice at the mo & aren't that interested in it & have to add extras to make it palatable for them
ph34r (& read that it may contain beet pulp >:( )
I cook up my own food for them regularly but if anyone knows of an alternative that may be a suitable I'd be most grateful
