Title: Here we go again [UPDATED] We have been.
Post by: ladylola on September 09, 2009, 08:38:37 PM
Back to the specialist with Paisley tomorrow.

Been 6 weeks since he was last there. They said the pseudomonas had gone but had yeast in his ear and was given Tablets for this, with a review in 6 weeks. Well his ear has been driving him [and us nuts] but couldn't get back in to see the specialist, had to go to my own vets, knocked out again, swab taken, a wait of 7 days and they said the pseudomonas was back [no yeast, so tabs must have worked for that] a different strain sensitive to Baytril so he has been on them again, but I know they haven't worked. His ear is still driving him nuts and the smell is horrendous. They can't do the allergy tests because he has to be off steroids for 6 weeks [he's been back on those] and ABs for 2 weeks. So where we go from here I don't know. He has had enough, we have no chance of cleaning or putting the stuff in his ears and oral Abs just don't work. Can't even get a muzzle on him now.
I'm beginning to think the only solution is the ear canal removal, but can they do that with the infection present. Hopefully will find out tomorrow and see what they suggest. Wish us luck as we are no further forward with this than we were 6 months ago.

Well we have been.

Bad news is we are back to where we were at the start.

Paisley has the same 3 infections we started off with.

I didn't see the point of them putting him out again he has had about 7 GA,s in the past 6 months.

I've asked them to do the OP full ear canal removal as we can't keep putting him through this, he is in terrible pain.

They have told me it is a very nasty OP and the things that can go wrong could be . left with facial paralysis [Bells Palsy]

Which may be pemanent. Or there is a small vein that can sometimes be caught which is very difficult to stop bleeding.

He will have the op done with Laser and will be on a Morphine drip. But hopefully when this heals he will have no more problems.

I feel now that we have no choice he can't go on as he is. They gave me a bottle of Metacam to try and help with his pain before he has the op.

He is booked in for the 23rd September  :'(  I'm dreading it and hope he doesn't suffer to much. He may have to stay overnight if they are not happy with him.

The bugbear is the cost of this OP it is going to be at least 1300 pounds.  We have already spent over and above this amount trying to get him right, to no avail.

NESSR have picked up these Bills and it's not fair on them to have to keep throwing money at something that is not working.

They also have a couple of other dogs with long term problems so we are desperately trying to raise funds to help all these dogs.

They are going to have a online auction and have plenty of springery stuff but no cocker stuff. If anybody has anything they could donate to NESSR we would be very grateful.

They hold a fun weekend every year where they can raise quite a bit of money, but sadly this year it wash  out with bad weather.
So funds are short and we need all the help we can get. They are having a mini one  19th-20th september  at Druridge bay Northumberland, Sounds like a great day out with displays stalls and whatnot. so if anyone is in that area please go along and support them. Things for raffles and tombolas, boot sales will be
gratefully received.  Donations can also be given through paypal on Nessrs website for anybody who would like to.

So for now we can only try to keep Paisley comfortable until he has this OP. Fingers crossed it all goes well.

Many many thanks go to Cynthia from NESSR for all she has done for Paisley and the other dogs. I'm sure many Rescues would not have given us this support, [out of site out of mind]  Paisley and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts  :-* :-*

What a blooming nightmare - poor Paisley and poor you  :-\

Still, hopefully the op will sort the problem once and for all.  Obviously they have to tell you the risks but as you say he cannot go on like this so not much option really.  Glad you have got a date not too far off though - will be good to get it over with.  Do you know of anyone else who has been through this op with their dog?

Sending big hugs and healing vibes for poor stinky Paisley  :-*

No don't know anyone,  There is 2 versions of this op I think, one where they just remove the straight canal.[don't know the technical tems  :lol2:]  Paisley has to the horizontal and vertical removed [The whole lot] He will be deaf when they have done it. basically he wont have an ear hole at all  :o.  just hoping it's not to painful for the poor soul though the specialist gave me the impression it is very painful  :'(   He just doesn't deserve this he is such a lovely cuddly boy.  It is an op they don't like to do if at all possible, but if it means a few weeks of pain to a lifetime of fun. we have no choice.
One good thing in his favour being a spaniel with spaniel lugs it will cover his earhole [or not earhole any longer] so won't spoil his good looks as long as he doesn't end up with the palsy.
He will be fine, He will be fine I keep telling myself.

I'm so sorry he's back to where he was again, poor Paisley :'(   It does sound like the surgery is the only solution for him and I hope it goes well :luv:  I know that AnnieG on here and I think Lily Freya have had dogs who have had this ear surgery.

I know that they have to explain the op and its downsides and the risks, but you will be giving Paisley his best and  probably only chance at getting rid of this awful ear problem. We will all be thinking of him on the 23rd I'm sure.  :luv:

So sorry to hear that the meds haven't worked for poor Paisley :-*, but I know of a few cockers that have had this done (whether it is the full op or partial I don't know) and once recovered they didn't look back.

One of them was Lily who I bred and was owned by Lily Freya (Maureen) (http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/discuss/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=17062) who now has Freya, Luis and Ollie and occasionally posts on here. I'm sure she would be happy to reassure you if you wanted to PM her. :D

Julie I promise you that after the post-surgery discomfort, everything will be fantastic............no more ear problems for Paisley.

Lily suffered for years, and was treated constantly with steroids, antibiotics and suchlike.... after the operation she never, ever had ear problems again.  They tell you that there is loss of hearing, and no doubt this has got to be true.....but, I tell you what.....Lily could hear the treat tin being opened from where ever she was.  So, there was no real detriment.

I wish you all the luck in the world......and I have everything crossed for Paisley.  He's not going to look back. xx
