Millie started having problems with her anal glands a few weeks ago after more than two years with me never noticing that smell from her ph34r and her main diet has always been the same, her poo is a generally a nice firm consistency ph34r :005:. I took her to the vet the week before last to make sure nothing untoward was going on. He said there were no growths or infection but they were quite full, and this could be due to a mild food allergy. She absolutely stinks again, she spent all last night making chomping noises and licking herself and her bed, which now stink as well :020:.
Her diet is a cupfull of wainwrights dry food in the morning and Naturesmenu raw nuggets in the evening or twice a week chicken wings. She does have a variety of treats that admitidly aren't that high quality but she's always had that. She did have beef bone with marrow in it from the butchers a few weeks ago, but surely that wouldn't cause a reaction .
So any tips on what could be causing it and what I could do to make it better? One of my previous cocker's had to have his removed cause we couldn't clear up the infection, but I didn't know anything about the affects of diet then. Also I can remember him being in pain with it but not smelling like Millie does :-\.

Try giving her some shreddies - I give them to all of mine now as Josie can suffer from this problem. I just give them half a dozen or so every now and then, and it seems to have done the trick. Josie gets more cos she is a lot bigger, and has had no problems since we started giving them to her!

marrow bone is really rich so it could indeed have caused a problem, or she may well have developed an intolerance to something in her food :-\
you may have to start eliminating things from her diet :dunno:
When she has chicken wings are her stools really firm the next afternoon? I judge Jarv by that, if he has a few rock hard no. 2's (apologies gentle readers for the explicit content :lol2: ) I don't worry. He went to the vet the other day and they were 'slightly' full so she did them. TBH I think with a few chicken wing days he would have naturally sorted them out ;)

Thanks guys.
Helen I've already told OH to not give her any titbits so I can start trying to work out what could be causing it. I'm usually quite hard nosed :shades: when it comes to things like this, but it seems to be they are leaking a bit all the time so she constantly stinks ::).

that's a bit odd that it's like a constant leak...usually they're squeezed and that's it...till the next time ::)

That seems odd to me too if Millie's glands are leaking after having been emptied (I'm assuming the vet did empty them when he saw her the other week?). Tilly is one of those lucky dogs whose glands fill up fairly regularly no matter what kind of diet she's on but they don't leak or bother her in between times. Maybe every 3 months or so I'll get a whiff of 'that' smell and she'll start licking and scooting so I know it's time to empty them but once it's done she's fine again til the next time. I would maybe try her on a few days of boney meals to see if that makes any difference and if not I'd take her back to the vet in case she has an infection.

I'm wondering now if she might have a respiratory infection or something going on in her mouth, her breath really stinks (as does her saliva) but her bum doesn't smell at all (yes I have been sniffing it ph34r :005: :005:) and I haven't seen her cleaning herself for ages :-\. Before the vet emptied the glands it was definitely that as her rear end smelled as well and looked damp where she'd been licking it, and if she sat on my lap they would empty onto me as she got up ph34r. She's quiet tonight even though my parents have been round for tea and she usually doesn't stop pestering my Mum for cuddles :-\. But it smells just like her anal glands.

Could be a lip fold infection? None of mine have had one but apparently they smell awful.

Doh!! Why is it when other people have problems lots of ideas pop into my head, but when its me my mind goes blank ::). off to check now...

Poor mooster how did I miss that :'( :'( :'( >:( >:(. Such an angel letting me look :luv:.

Skye used to have awful problems with her anal glands, then we discovered mini Shreddies!!!! 4 in the morning when we have our breakfast and no more smell. They can also be used as a treat as they have no fat or naughty stuff in them. Skye loves them!!!!

God that stinks! Well she's as cleaned up as I can get her, that was one of those jobs where half way through I wished I'd tied my hair up ph34r. Straight to the vets in the morning, yet again I'm glad of a vets that operate a walk-in system instead of appointments only ;).
-
Bless her. I hope she is better and much less stinky soon :-* :-*
-
Aw I'm sure the vet will get her sorted tomorrow, at least you've got to the bottom of it now... or rather the mouth of it :005:
-
yayyy - glad you've found the source of that reek :020:
Hope the vet gets her sorted quickly :luv: :luv:

Well to be honest my 8 month old has had problems with Anal Glands ever since Ive had him hes had them emptied about 3 times my vet has never mentioned his diet and just said its just one of those things with Cockers hes on JWB as I changed him from Bakers OCmplete in the hope it would help but it hasnt, his dont leak at all just scoots when they are full I presume its going to be one of those things
How do shreddies help?

They add fibre to the diet, bulking up the poo. So in theory because poos are larger they empty the glands on the way out :D
