Title: Is your cocker a home lover?
Post by: nicros on February 14, 2010, 02:20:16 PM
My Jake has been to visit a few houses with all of us now to see friends and family and every time he seems to look a bit lost and wants to get back in the car. Yesterday we went to the inlaws which we has been to quite a few times before and Jess came too, she settled straight away. Jake just wanderded in and out constantly so I ended up standing by the back door most of the time. He never actually sat down at all, but didn't seem distressed. We took him for a long walk off lead and played with him but he wouldn't settle at all. He kept crying by the front door to be in the car. As soon as we were going home he shot in the car and laid down and slept all the way home. He just seems to prefer his own home for some reason whereas Jess doesn't mind as long as she is fussed she will go anywhere. Just wondered if anyone elses cocker did this ? maybe its a normal reaction but this is my first cocker so not sure, thanks Nic :-\

Mine are the same, and so was Gari, they are happy to go to visit people, but once they are there, they want to go home again (bit like myself! :005:)

We went to the in-laws a while back straight from a big walk, and after a wander around the house and garden, Tia stood at the front door with her nose against it! :005:

Charley is the same but not at all friends we visit.

One of my friends has three rescue dogs and he often paws me to go back in the car.  It was worse a few years ago when she had a Border Collie who used to follow Charley around the house and would not let him settle.  She would often nip his back leg and Charley just didn't like it.  It was the one and only time that I have seen Charley react and snap and snarl.  She had nipped Charley when he was lying down under my chair, and he turned on her.  She learned her lesson and never nipped him again, although she would still stalk him.

thanks for those replies, I'm glad its not just my Jake. Although sometimes it would be easier not to be invited as its too much hassle to spend most of the days visit freezing to death in someone else's garden! :005:

Ellie loves her home but she quite likes everyone else's as well.  All the new sniffs, people to say hello to and get lots of fuss from and, when she goes to my sister-in-laws, special bicuits that are bought just for her.  One of my most embarrasing moments was when she was about 8 months old and we were on holiday in Pembrokeshire.  She was off her lead snuffling around a churchyard whilst I looked at the graves (one of my more weirdest interests!), I thought the churchyard was dog proof but she managed to squeeze through the gate.  An old gentleman was sitting in a chair by his open front door, she flew straight passed him and into the house.  Could I get hold of her, no.  She went all over the house before I caught her.  Luckily he thought it funny.

Same with Chloe; we only go to a couple of folks houses though  :005: Chloe just gets excited whenever she even sets eyes on another hooman....in her wee mind, hoomans are put on this earth purely to give her lots of cuddles and attention  ph34r :005:

Misha & Roly (and Lexi probably) like their home and everybody elses too.  I take Misha with me on homechecks sometimes and she loves it especially if there are children to make a lot of fuss her (and feed her plenty of treats), she's happy.

Give the way that they drag me into the office when they have to go into kennels they're happy wherever they go if they're all together.  Roly just likes to be where his mum is.  Misha & Lexi would probably go off with anyone who had treats. :lol2:
