I've put off posting about this so far as I wanted to know what was really going on but Tills could do with some magic COL good thoughts... I noticed a while back that she was losing weight and thought it was time of year, her being out working etc. so I upped her food and was giving her tripe, rabbit, lamb etc. but it didn't make any difference, she was losing all her muscle tone and starting to look very ribby which is not like Tills at all and then she started with diarrohea and vomiting. I took her to the vet and she had blood tests but they were inconclusive, they didn't show any signs of infection but she wasn't improving any so last week she went in for further blood tests, x-rays and an ultrasound. She had gone from her normal weight of 17.2kg to 14.8kg last week which is not good for a Cocker of Tilly's size and today she was 14.6kg, she is very thin.
The ultrasound last week showed, in the vet's words, that her stomach and bowel was 'a bit of a mess'. Normal thickness of bowel for a dog Tilly's size is 2mm, hers is 6mm, very inflamed and showing scarring. The provisional but 99% certain diagnosis from last week was that she has progressive eosinophilic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) which basically stops her absorbing any nutrition from her food, not to put too fine a point on it if she kept going the way she was she'd have starved no matter how much I'd fed her.
We were sent home with a week's supply of Hill's d/d food and she was supposed to go back to the vet on Thursday once all the lab results were back and to arrange to have biopsies taken as that is the only way to absolutely confirm an IBD diagnosis (hence the 'provisional' above). However, she has become quite ill since last week, I've been sleeping downstairs and have been up with her at least 4 or 5 times every night as she's desperate to get out, she's lost more weight, her coat looks dreadful (worse than usual), and she's so tired, she's just not Tilly at all, she's been sleeping maybe 22 hours a day for the last few days. I spoke to her vet yesterday and he brought her appointment forward so I took her into the vet hospital first thing this morning and they have kept her in there, she has been put on a drip and is going to be having surgery tomorrow to take biopsies from her bowel, intestines and liver and she's not going to be home again until Thursday at the earliest.
So that is the story so far :-\ I'm worried sick about my girl, I have been for weeks now, I honestly don't know what the outcome of this is going to be. She's quite weak and there is a fairly hefty risk to her from both the GA tomorrow and the biopsy taking itself as her intestinal walls are not normal and with the vet cutting holes in them there is a risk of leakage and contamination of the peritoneum. There's also a chance they're going to find something like lymphoma once they open her up but there's no point dwelling on that until I know, it is probably more likely that it is IBD as the vet thinks.
IBD isn't curable and it is progressive but there is a possibility of managing it at least for a while with diet and a combination of long-term high-dose steroids, antibiotics and immunosuppressant drugs, all of which have their own side effects. There are several types of IBD and they think from her symptoms that she has the eosinophilic type which is the most severe, the treatment would be high-dose Prednisolone with all its possible side effects plus a strong immunosuppressant such as Azathioprine - it's often used as a chemotherapy drug and she'd have to have a complete blood count every two weeks while on it. If these are her only options I am going to have to weigh up the risks and benefits very carefully as to me her quality of life is the most important thing. If anyone has any experience of or advice about these drugs, or of IBD, I'd very much appreciate it.
I have to add also, Helen, Jo (Crazy Cocker Gang) and Elisa have been brilliant over the last few weeks and I can't thank them enough :-*
-
I'm sorry i can't offer any advice, just wanted to say i hope everything goes well and my thoughts are with you and little Tilly, xx

-
Nicola, I'm so sorry that Tilly is so ill. :'( :'(
We'll be sending all the positive thoughts in the world for Tilly tomorrow. :luv:
I'm sure you're well aware of the side effects of Prednisilone, but I hope that you don't mind me mentioning that they made Oscar ravenously hungry while he was on them. I think Julie (LadyLola) found the same with Paisley. We ended up giving Oscar extra meals which is okay short term, but obviously has implications long term. :-\
I know you'll make the best decisions for Tilly, we're sending hugs for you.
x
-
So sorry to hear Tilly is so ill, hope all goes well tomorrow and you get a manageable outcome. I can't imagine how worried you are at the moment, but it seems that there is COL magic and I hope all these good wishes work.
My Westie Holly was on prednislerone for about 4 years, it was the only thing that stopped her eating herself alive due to her dodgy skin. It did make her ravenous but it helped her live as normal a life as was possible.
-
Will be thinking of you all tomorrow Nic, you have been a fountain of knowledge whilst we were having health issues with Baja, I just wish I could return all the useful advice you have given me.
Best of luck tomorrow, you will have so many people thinking of Tilly the power of COL is a wonderful thing :luv:
-
OMG Nic why didnt you say anything when you were up??? Am stunned that Miss Tills is so ill she seemed her usual self on our walk. Wow, thank you so much everyone, I'm overwhelmed by all your messages and thoughts for Tills :luv: I had to log off for a while earlier, I had a splitting headache, I think it's all finally catching up with me. I rang the vet though and Tills is ok, she slept most of the day and is still very weak but she still managed to pull the drip out of her leg twice until they bandaged it in place :shades: Unless they get an emergency in she's first on the list for surgery tomorrow so I'll update as soon as I know anything. Thanks again for all the good thoughts x
OMG :o Nicola, i am so, so sad to read this...all those gorgeous pics you posted last week, and no one would have guessed Tilly was so poorly :'(
I wondered if anyone would see a change in her in the photos, to me she looks awful, I can see the thinness and tiredness in her face but I'm seeing her all the time. She's very fuzzy just now which hides a lot of it, you don't realise how bony she has become until you see her from above and touch her and you can feel her breastbone and every one of her vertebrae sticking out. Tilly being Tilly though up until last week she was still saving her energy for her walks and was still acting pretty normally while she was out.
-
Positive thoughts and wishes for tomorrow from us. Tillys are very special girls.

Am so sorry to hear that Tilly is so poorly :'( Tilly's symptoms sound very similar to the one's our boy Arnold had. He was gradually losing weight and went from about 12kg to just over 7kg. He was just skin and bone and you could see his ribs so bad :'( Some days he was so weak he could hardly stand up and his usual glossy coat went dull and lifeless :'( :'( After lots of tests and biopsy's we were told he wasn't digesting his food properly and not absorbing any nutrition from it. As soon as we got the diagnosis we started to mix some powder in his food, can't remember what it was called but can remember the smell, it stank. We did that for a while then the vet did some research and found some capsules (that didn't smell) which we emptied into his food, sorry I can't remember the name of them. They were very expensive but worth every penny as he improved no end. He had full blood counts every couple of weeks. He gained weight again and got a new lease for life. He had flare ups now and again when he would have to stay in hospital for a few days to get the dosege correct. There was no cure but it was manageble.
Sending tonnes of positive thoughts your way for a good outcome for Tilly :-*
-
Arnold that sounds very much like Tilly's symptoms... was your boy diagnosed with IBD? I might drop you a pm if that's ok.
-
Only just seen this Nicola. I hope all goes well tomorrow. I will be thinking about you and Tilly and will be keeping everything crossed for a positive outcome.
Sending all our love and hugs. xxxxx
-
She IS a very special girl indeed. I fell in love with her the first time I saw her. I did think when you were up last week that she didn't look anywhere near as good as when you stayed with us last year, although you didn't say anything about her illness till after you'd left. Her coat was very dull and (when she wasn't running about) she had that withdrawn into herself look that dogs get when they're sick.
I so hope it all works out for you both. She couldn't have a better owner to see her through this.
Much love
Di

oh Tilly :luv: I hope you get on ok today and you feel better soon :luv:
Nic, if she were a person you would be describing me. I have always been normal weight for my height till a few years ago i was, constantly tired, vomiting, running to the toilet and dropped 3 stone in 5 weeks :o After many tests it was discovered i had Crohn's Disease which is obviously a form of IBD.
The same as Tilly i wasn't absorbing nutrients so no matter what i was eating it wasn't staying in. I now have B12 injections once or twice a month to combat this, and they do help. At first i was on a seriously heavy duty dose of Prednisolone which was gradually reduced as and when necessary, The only side effect of this was the puffiness! I didn't feel especially hungry but they caused my face to swell ( especially my lips!)
I was put onto Azathioprine a few months ago but had to come off it as my immune system was already dangerously low
I have been looking into various things that can boost the immune system and I'm pretty sure Helen would have a few ideas on this. The immune system is a big part of this as IBD is caused by the immune system so if it can be boosted the symptoms should be reduced.
What I'm trying to say is i know it's different for dogs and people but I was also very ill and albeit with a lot of meds i still lead a pretty normal life with the exception of not being able to eat & drink some things, but it's a small sacrifice to be healthy and (almost!) normal again!
-
So very sorry to hear about Tilly, will be thinking of you today, I hope that you get some positive news and Tilly will soon be on the mend.

Thanks for that Jay, again that's really interesting. The vet gave her a vitamin B injection last week as her levels were so low.
I just spoke to the vet, I rang at 6am, she hadn't had a great night and they said she'd probably be having the surgery at about 9 but something must have come up as she's still waiting, from the latest update they should be taking her in in the next 45 minutes or so.Thanks again for all the thoughts.

Poor darling Tilly :luv: sending lots of positive vibes and hope with all my heart that you get a good outcome today .... lots of ((( hugs))) for you Nic :-*
-
Here's hoping that Tilly is on the road to recovery and the op went ok .Everything crossed for you all today :luv: :luv:
-
Only just logged in and seen this - I am so very sorry to hear what you and Tilly are going through Nicola you are both in my thoughts and prayers I hope the vet can give you some positive news very shortly.
Like Jay I also have Crohn's and Till's symptoms sound very much like my own. Like Jay I have had various doses of Pred over the years and was on Azathioprine for several years with good results - meant I was able to come off the steriods for a while. I too have B12 jabs regularly and also take folic acid and a multi vit as I can't extract enough nutrients from my food intake. I have had Crohn's for 29 years and most of the time "forget" I am any different to other folks, despite only having about 1m of bowel left!! At one point I was on a prescription fluid only diet to give the bowel a chance to rest (awful stuff!) I wonder whether they do a similar food which would be helpful to Tills?
Keeping everything crossed that you get some answers. Sandra xx
-
Have been out and just logged on to check for news :-\ How are things now Nic - has Tilly had the op?
Still sending lots of hugs and positive thoughts from here. :-*
-
The vet rang about 10 minutes ago, she's had the biopsies taken and was literally just off the table when he rang. They're keeping her sedated and on the IV fluids, I have to ring back at 4 o'clock to see how she's doing then. I'm so glad she got through the GA ok, although he said it was difficult to stitch her bowel up again, there's quite a lot of granuloma tissue there and it looks very messy. He took samples from her stomach, liver, and several parts of her intestines and it's probably going to be about 5-7 days before any results come back although just from looking he said it looks quite severe :-\
-
What a horrible time for you :'(n I hope she's feeling better soon :luv:
-
OMG Nicola, I have only just seen this. How awful.
I am so sorry she is so poorly. Thrilled, of course, that she has made it through the op. I will be thinking of her (and you) as you wait for the biopsy results and for her recovery from the surgery. I hope that goes well with no complications.

I just spoke to the vet again, I was on the phone at the dot of 4pm. She's being very slow to come around, he said she's still pretty out of it and unresponsive but her vitals are ok but they'll call me straight away if anything changes, they're monitoring her closely for complications. I can call again later and he'll call me first thing in the morning again with another update, they have 24 hour vet and nurse cover at the hospital which is a big reassurance. I don't know when she'll be able to come home, if they're still not happy with her tomorrow she'll have to stay in. It's very stressful, I really wish I could see her :'(
Also wanted to say thank you to everyone who has pm'med and texted me, I really appreciate all your messages and support; if I don't reply straight away it's not because I'm ignoring you, I'm sure you all understand that but I wanted to say anyway :-*
-
Really pleased to hear that Tilly has made it over the first hurdle, fingers crossed for a positive outcome from the tests. Hopefully you'll be able to see her soon too.

Just to say we are sending lots and lots of healing thoughts to Tilly :luv: hope there is positive news soon

Oh Nic, what a nightmare for you. Bet your headache hasn't gone away has it? :shades: Glad Tilly came through the GA alright and hope she starts to perk up this evening. :-* It is awful waiting and not knowing what is going on. At least when you have a diagnosis you can start to do something practical. :-\ You must be beside yourself with worry :'( It is good that they have 24 hour cover though - must be very reassuring. I am sure Tills is feeling groggy and out of it so is probably not too bothered that you are not there at the moment - I know what you mean about wanting to see her though. Your mind starts to go into overdrive and imagine all sorts but she really is in the best place just now - Tilly has so much on her side, she is fit and healthy otherwise and has the best possible mum who will do the very best for her so she is a lucky girl. :D Plus she has the benefit of the whole of COL rooting for her :luv: :luv:
Still sending loads of positive thoughts and hoping for some better news later on :-* :-*
Big hugs from me and Coco :bigarmhug:

Only just seen this, I'm so sorry that Tilly is so poorly and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. xxx
I remember the helplessness, frustration and wide range of emotions I went through when my dobie was diagnosed with AIHA & spent 3 weeks at the vets while they were trying all sorts of drugs on her. Different illness, but the same feelings I'm sure. My heart goes out to you.
Take care of yourself xx C'mon Tilly :luv:

Thanks again everyone... I've spoken to the vet and there wasn't really a big change in her overnight, she's still very tired and lethargic and hasn't eaten anything. They tried her with food this morning and she didn't want it (unheard of for Tills) so they're not going to let her go yet :-\ I have to call back at 12 to see if there's any change, she's on very strong antibiotics to stop an infection setting in.
-
Thinking of you and hoping you get some encouraging news soon x

The vet was busy when I rang at 12 so I had to wait for him to call me back. She's still refusing food and just sleeping :-\ They did carry her out for a pee and she went but she needs to perk up and eat. Her temperature and heart rate are ok which is good but she's 'weak and lethargic' (vet's description). He said I can go in and see if I can get her to perk up and eat a bit so I'm going in at 3 to see her. I said that someone dressed up as a giant tennis ball might have the best chance of perking her up though..!
-
Am sure she'll perk up once she sees you
-
still sending positive thoughts and hugs hun :luv: :luv:

So pleased your getting to go and see her. I'm sure she will be pleased to see you :luv:

-
Sorry Tilly is still feeling poorly - it is scary when they won't eat especially when they are usually a foody dog :-\
Hope she perks up by the time you see her - do they think it is the after effects of the op or her illness that is making her so sleepy today
C'mon Tilly, eat some food for your mum :luv:
-
Hope she perks up when you see her Nic, will be thinking of you at 3 o clock ;)

Hope she perks up by the time you see her - do they think it is the after effects of the op or her illness that is making her so sleepy today
It's a bit of both, she's so thin and has so little energy due to the ongoing malabsorption of food so that combined with the GA and the invasive operation has knocked her for six. The real danger is infection/peritonitis and that's what she's being monitored for, she's not strong enough to fight anything at the moment.
-
oh this is so awful, not read whole thread but wanted to send love to you and Tilly x :luv:
-
Hope she perks up & eats something when you go in later Nicola
-
Hope she perks up when she sees you :luv:
There's no chance of her having that malabsorption thing that GSD's can be prone to is there? Can't remember the name of it but it involves the pancreas - I imagine any problems in that area would have been noticed on the bloods or when they opened her up?
-
Have only just caught up with this, so very sorry
Sending positive thoughts to you and your very special girl :luv: :luv:
-
Fingers crossed she will perk up when she sees you and will eat a little for her mummy. I keep logging to see if there are any updates, sending lots of positive thoughts your way.

Hope she has managed to eat something. ;)
-
Well I'm just shortly back and they let me bring her home with me :luv: She was happier when she saw me, she sat up and ate some of the food out of my hand but she's still very weak and tired and is on strong antibiotics, anti-emetics and painkillers. I have to keep a very close eye on her but I'm glad she's here, she really didn't like being in the hospital much with all the barky dogs and comings and goings and they realised that so they said she'd probably be better off at home where she can get some peace and quiet. Thanks again for all the good wishes, hopefully the biopsy results will be back early to mid next week and we can see what they show and what the options are then.
-
Pleased she's home with you :luv:
-
So pleased she's at home with you now - hopefully her recovery from the op will be much quicker now she's with her mum :luv: Hugs to you both and fingers crossed on the biopsy results.

is Ro happy to have her back or did he enjoy being an only dog for a while?
He was very waggy when he saw her again but he's been in his element having me all to himself in the last few days, I think his nose might be a bit out of joint as he's being even more attention seeking than usual ::) :005:
Tills is still sleeping, I have to wake her up every hour to give her some fluids and then take her temperature and give her some food every 2-3 hours but she doesn't stay awake for long.

Here's hoping that being at home, and sleeping so much, will give her the strength to start getting better. :luv: Let's hope for good news next week with her results.
I expect she will be sleeping in your room, so that you can have peace of mind that she is ok. ;)

So pleased Tilly perked up a little and was able to come home. As they say 'sleep is the best medicine' so hopfully with plenty of rest she will gain some strength to enable her to recover from all that's happened to her lately, poor girl :luv:
Sending tonnes of healing thought for her :-*
-
so pleased she's home, have really been thinking about her a lot these last few days as my Alfie reminds me of her so much.
Give her lots of TLC Nic. :luv:
-
I'm really pleased Tilly is home with you and her brother :luv: but where is little sister?
Caoimhe's down with her trainer again just now.
I expect she will be sleeping in your room, so that you can have peace of mind that she is ok. ;)
Close, I'm back on the sofa :005: It's easier to keep her downstairs in the big crate as it's all padded out for her and I can get her out to the garden more quickly if she needs it and don't need to worry about her jumping on and off the bed or trying to get down the stairs.
She ate some more d/d food earlier, I've puréed it and am giving it to her via syringe as she seems to take a bit more in that way and other than that she's just sleeping.
-
Huge hugs for Tilly, bless her wee heart :luv:
Really hope she gets through all this, lots of healing thoughts again :luv:
-
Hope you both have a comfortable night x x

-
Hows your little girl this morning?
-
Thanks again everyone... It wasn't the most restful night for either of us unfortunately, she was very fidgety and whining a lot and she's trying to chew her stitches so I ended up having to lift her out of the crate and hold her on the sofa with me plus I still had to check her temperature and make sure she got some water in so it didn't make for a great night's sleep. She needed to go out a fair few times too as until she starts on some kind of treatment she's still not digesting anything properly so still has chronic diarrohea although at least the anti-emetics are keeping her from vomiting as well. I'm shattered ph34r I was supposed to go down to Bishop Burton today for one of the college block weekends, thank god I was able to change it to next week, apart from not wanting to leave Tilly there'd be about as much chance of me piloting the space shuttle today as driving to Yorkshire.
-

sending more positive thoughts that she can be helped back to full health very soon :luv: :-*

Tills is still very tired and quiet, she's slept most of the day in between fidgety spells and trying to pick at her stitches but she's managed to eat a full tin of pureed d/d food spread out over 5 meals so that's good. The continuing diawotsit is not so good but at least shes got something going in at any rate. Thanks again for all the good thoughts :luv:

-

-
OH took over duties this morning for a few hours so I could get some sleep, I'm zombiefied ph34r There's not really much change in her, she's now eating herself without me having to syringe it in and her temperature is still ok but she's still very lethargic, very uncomfortable and still has terrible diawotsit. I don't think it's going to change much until they get her onto some sort of medication so it's just a matter of hanging in there until next week really. She's still wagging her tail and still licking faces and chewing ears though :luv:
-
Bless her :luv: she sounds like a little fighter to me.
-
If she is feeding herself thats got to be a good sign hasn't it. Glad she is licking and wagging her tail. Still got everything crossed for the lovely Tilly. Keep strong :luv: :luv:
-
I've just caught up with this thread, so sorry to hear about your little girl, I hope as I write this she's getting some strength back and starting to pick up a bit.
You must be very tired and worried, try to make sure you look after yourself as well because you're the most important person in her world and she'll need you to be well too. It's easy to put yourself on the back burner and forget your own needs, try to make time to eat well if nothing else or you'll become run down as well. The dogs won't mind what you look like but they need you to be well.
It made me wonder if dogs get Coeliac Disease as well as people, I know some dogs are on gluten free foods but I guess the biopsies would show it anyway if the villi are flattened. It's an auto immune disease with the same symptoms but easier to control than the other possible diagnosis.
Hope all goes well and she feels better soon.
Edited to add - Nicola we posted at the same time, good to hear your OH is looking after you as well x
-
Aww well done Tilly :luv: ..hope she gets stronger and will feel better soon. Hope you can get some rest Nic :luv:
-
A wag and a lick says it all :luv: Hope the results come back swiftly next week
-
so glad Tilly is managing to eat by herself now, thats positive news.
She is amazing to still be wagging her tail despite being uncomfortable, its good that she is such a trooper she is obviously a real fighter :luv:
keeping her in my thoughts at the moment and hoping you get results back quickly so you know where you go from here and hopefully can get some medication going to start to improve things.
take care of yourself and stay strong
xx
-
glad you've had a tiny bit of rest :bigarmhug:
The diawotsit won't be sorted until she's on the meds so as long as she's making tiny steps forward then that is fabulous - bless her for being your licky chewy girl, that made me a bit leaky eyed
xxx
-

Having said that, it sounds like she's holding her own at the moment, eating and responding to you :luv:
Hang in there, get sleep when you can so you look after yourself too.
We're sending our best wishes for clear results and a strong recovery :luv:

xx
-
I thought you might like to see her :luv: she's not looking her usual self to say the least though. This is pretty much how she's been since she got home. The Equafleece was a bit of an operation to get on but it stops her trying to get at the stitches quite so much. Excuse the red eye in the photos, I forgot to turn the flash off.

Aww. me either, expected to see a tree trunk hanging out of his mouth!!!
Get well soon Tilly x x

Thinking of you both all the time. Come on Tilly you can do it. :luv:

Tilly sweetie you are doing so so well...come on hun you're worrying your poor mum :luv:
-
One step at a time I guess. Through the op...check....healing nicely....check. Just need results you can work from and you are well on the way to being the usual Miss Tilly! Huge hugs to you both :luv:
-
Well I got a suprise and the vet rang this afternoon with the biopsy results, I think he was pushing the lab to get them back as quickly as possible. There's good news and bad news really, the good news is that they didn't find anything else besides what the vet thought it was. The bad news is that they did find what the vet thought it was and it's pretty severe. I have to take her in on Friday and she's going to start on high dose Prednisone and Azathioprine from Saturday. Both of those have a risk of side effects but hopefully she'll be lucky this time and not be affected too much. I always ask the vet not to beat around the bush with me and the long term prognosis isn't great but hopefully she will respond to the drugs in the short to medium term, if I can get her back to something like normal and keep her that way for as long as possible then that's all I can ask for really. I wish it was better news but it could still be a lot worse I s'pose :-\
-
awww Nic :-*
I so hope Tilly responds to the treatment :luv: :luv:
-
Well at least now you have an action plan... The waiting and wondering is over. Still sending good vibes your way that she responds well to the meds. ;-)
-
awww Nic :-*
I so hope Tilly responds to the treatment :luv: :luv:
Same here -at least you know what you're dealing with now :-*
-
Sort of bittersweet eh? I am sure the drugs will help and as for prognosis.....well, our babies have their own agendas!! She could defy you all and keep going. Chloe's prognosis was a few months if at all.....7 years later!!
I was telling Mr Sheryl about Tilly and he said to send you this. Chloe 3 years into her Prednisilone/Azathioprine regime. I truly believe that over and above the drugs, the love you pour into them and the vigilance you maintain helps just as much as any drug and if that is the case......she will be here for a long time yet xx

Thanks everyone, Sheryl I've been thinking about Chloe a lot with all this, she's going to be Tilly's inspiration :luv: I really hope Tills responds as well as she did to that drug combination, thank you for that photo :-*
It is better to know though definitely, it's weird, getting a diagnosis even if it's not fabulous news is still better than not knowing for sure.
-
I'm sure the meds will work wonders :luv: she has a caring mummy that loves her what better medicine can see have :luv:

:bigarmhug: I know it's not unexpected but it must be a shock getting that news... now knowing will help you and Tilly move forward though.
Thinking of you both, and hoping that this week will be the start if you getting your old Tilly back again :luv: :luv:

I think so , you tend to just deal with it, adjust and cope then ;)
Sorry it wasn't slightly better news tho Nic, but fingers crossed Tilly responds well to the meds :D

I think that when you know what you are fighting things become a little easier. You can plan and make informed choices instead of grasping at anything and everything.
I am sure Chloe would have loved nothing better than to be an inspiration! Albeit a barrel shaped one ph34r Cannot really say why Chloe did so well. I know that I loved her to within an inch of her life every day (much to her disgust) and that I treated her as if every day was her last. That was a lot of days by the way :005: If I can help, please just shout.
Are they giving some sort of antacid whilst the steroid dose is so high? Sorry, random question I know!

Are they giving some sort of antacid whilst the steroid dose is so high? Sorry, random question I know!
Not random at all! Yes, she's been on Zantac for nearly 2 weeks already as she's had awful acid reflux as well as the vomiting and she's going to have to continue with them. They've helped a bit so far but she's still got it, especially during the night, it sounds like she's choking and she gets quite distressed with it :'(
-
I was hoping the vet's early diagnosis would be proved wrong. :'( It's been small steps of progress for you Nic but it must be some relief to have a plan of action now. Fingers crossed the meds do the trick and can get Tilly up and about soon.
-

Maybe that part of it will settle when she starts her drug regime as well as the antacids. I think as with Chloe, everything is trial and error until you strike just the right balance. She is lucky that you know her inside out and back to front because that knowledge is a great help. The ability to spot things going pear shaped before even the vet can is invaluable!
You will be her greatest asset so keep yourself healthy too mate :-*
-
Big hugs to you and Tills :-*
I hope she responds well to the treatment :luv:
-
Sorry it is not better news Nic but as you say it could have been worse if they had found something else :-\ As you say, at least you know what you are dealing with and can get Tilly started on a programme to hopefully manage her condition as much as possible. Let's hope she responds well to the meds and is soon back to enjoying life like she did before all this ;) I know that with you as her mum, Tilly has the best possible chance of living a full and happy life for as long as is possible. Who knows what is round the corner but treatments are improving all the time so I am sure you will have many happy days with your special girl to look forward to :bigarmhug: Do they know how long it should take for her to respond to the treatment?
-
Am sure Tilly will do well on her meds with such a loving mum looking after her :luv: ...hope they help, sending positive thoughts x
-
Do they know how long it should take for her to respond to the treatment?
It's a bit of a guesstimate really, as Sheryl has said there's a lot of trial and error with these drugs regarding the dosage. She'll be starting off on a very high dose and the aim is to gradually decrease it to find her 'maintenance level' although with a progressive condition that'll have to be continually monitored. The vet did say that hopefully the vomiting and diarrohea should stop within a few weeks on such high doses and maybe then she can start to put a bit of weight back on. She has to stay on the prescription diet as well, that's a major part of the treatment, she's not supposed to have anything else at all - no raw, no treats, no chews, nothing.
-
Fingers crossed you see good results with the treatment asap :bigarmhug: Thinking of you. x
she's not supposed to have anything else at all - no raw, no treats, no chews, nothing.
When I researched a prescription diet for Penny I came across treats that were made by the prescription diets that could be used in conjunction with the prescription diet? Might be worth a look if she's getting bored with the diet. Which diet is she on?
-
glad to hear that you have the news and can now work towards the best solution for Tilly. I'm sure it will help loads to have Chloe as an example of how things should improve. Thinking of you x
-
At least you know what you're up against and can plan for it now - I hope that results are good and long lasting - thinking of you and Tilly from over here xx :luv:

:bigarmhug: For you and Tilly Nic :luv:
I'm sure you'll soon get her medication levels right and with you to support her Tilly will have the best life possible, :luv:
Healing thoughts on their way for Tilly

Sorry the news isn't the best it could've been, but as has been said, now you can put a plan together and get your girl back towards her magnificent best.... I've not been on the forum long, but you get an immediate sense of how much love, care and attention the dogs get from the various mums & dads from the posts and from that I would say I don't think Tilly could be in a better place to start on a path to being a happy girl again.
Hugs and sloppy cocker kisses

Hoping your lovely girl responds well to this treatment.
I'm sure she will, with all us rooting for her.

Oh I'll definitely check that out, it would be great if they have treats cos she does miss her daily gravy bones. She's on Hill's d/d salmon variety as she needed to have a novel protein. I'm not going to stop giving Rodaidh and Caiomhe treats as that's not fair to them but I can't give them something and give Tills nothing, I've asked them to order me a bag of the dry d/d in for Friday (she's currently on the tins) so if nothing else I can give her pieces of the kibble as treats.
Thanks again everyone :luv:

I can't find anything on a quick search regarding the treats. I found this site which refers to making treats out of Z/D and D/D. http://www.petsourceusa.com/Blog/can-you-make-dog-treats-using-hills-zd-prescription-diet-canned-dog-food.html - I'd double check with the vet, but someone on there refers to treat making recipes out of the prescription diet on the Hills website? I'm sure the dried kibble will go down a treat for treats (scuse the pun!). Also, I have found this website invaluable with Penny's kidney problems, not sure if it covers Tilly's problems, but could be worth a look http://www.dogaware.com/ If I think of anything else, I'll look it up and post it. :)

Nicola with you helping & caring so much for her, Tilly really couldn't be in better hands. :luv: :luv:

Still sending lots of love to Tilly. Really hope she responds well to the treatment. Thinking of you both.

I hope Tilly responds well to the treatment and starts getting back some energy for some nice long runs again.
As you know I was debating on what to give Baja whilst he was on the d/d but I found he used the dry food just as treats and got a thing for ice cubes!
Our vet was charging huge amounts for the d/d so we found www.mybowwow.co.uk had it at a better price and quite quick delivery. It soon adds up when you are paying vet bills and an extra £20/£30 per bag when you buy it from the vet!
Look after yourself, your the most important person to Tilly right now

:'( Sorry Nicola I was hoping for a miracle I think :-\ Got everything crossed she responds well :luv: :luv:

I'm sorry it wasn't better news Nic, but at least you know what you are dealing with and what is needed for Tilly to get as well as possible. :luv:
I'm sure she will be happy with pieces of the dry food as treats, especially if you make it fun for her (like you normally do anyway), hide and seek, Kongs, the waste of money Tug-A-Jug, etc. :D
I hope Tilly is well enough to come on a meet soon, there are loads of tree trunks waiting for her! ;) :luv:

Nicola, I'm so sorry that its not better news. We're sending all the positive thoughts in the world that Tilly responds well to the meds and starts to feel a lot better very soon. :luv: :luv:

Thank you so much for all the lovely posts and messages everyone :luv:
-
So sorry that the news wasn't better, Nic. As everyone else has said though, at least you now have a definite diagnosis which is better than not knowing and Tilly can get started on some treatment. I really hope that she responds well and that you can find the right balance for her. I know she'll be receiving the very best care and attention and no-one else could do better for her. :-*
xx
-
Just want to echo what everyone else has said. Thinking of you and Tills.
-
Oh I'm glad you have a diagnosis. At least now you can start some treatment. I know it's not the same thing, but my old boy had extremely bad heart disease and had a massive heart attack and ended up in the vets on a drip and it was touch and go, but he came through and on his meds you wouldn't even have known he was ill. He was back to himself. I really hope it's the same for Tilly. Like with my boy you just have to live for today. Take care. Still sending loads of positive healing thoughts and thinking of you. Take care Luv Sarah and crew. :-*
-
Sending hugs :bigarmhug: to Tilly and you. I have no idea what the drugs are you've mentioned but hope she responds well to her treatment now :-*

I don't really have anything constructive to say, but I wanted you to know i have been thinking of you and Tilly and I hope that she responds well to the treatment and is home with you soon xx :luv:

Can't really add anything else but just to say I'm thinking of you and Tilly :-* Hope your very special brown girl starts to feel better soon :luv: :luv:

He's keeping everything crossed that Tilly responds well to treatment. Keep going girl xx
-
Sorry it wasn't better news. But with a mum like you we know she'll be very well cared for. I hope she responds well to the treatment :luv:
-
I echo everything that has been said above. I hope it won't be long before Tilly responds to her treatment and starts to regain her strength and vitality. She is such a beautiful girl.
Hugs to you both :luv:

aw Nic, sorry to hear the news although from her symptoms i was fairly sure this would be the outcome. It's bad news but not the end of the world, ( even though it feels like it!) Once the meds start working you should see Tills not going to the toilet/being sick as much and hopefully she may put some weight on. This was pretty much what happened with me although it did take a few weeks. I don't know if you've had a look at any of thr 'human' IBD websites? It gives you a pretty good idea of what stuff is good & bad for her. I know she is on a limited diet just now buf if you feel confident enough to introduce her to other things once the meds kick in have a wee look.
-
Hi Nicola so sorry i've only just seen this, we've been having computer problems. I'm so sorry Tilly is so poorly i'm positive with a mum like you she will have the best chance of a good quality of life. You asked about pred and azo and I know you have probably had loads of info already but We have had experience of both with Jasper. When he was diagnosed with Lupus Both drugs were part of his treatment along with Chlorambucil (another cancer drug) as well as others and he was fine on them all. To be honest we didn't have a choice, but his dose of pred was 25mg and the azothiaprine was 25mg too. They did eventually reduce and he stopped the azothiaprine altogether He is still on 10mg of pred a day and Chlorambucil every other day but my little hero is still with us and has a good quality of life. The pred does ruin their coats and make them barrel shaped but it was a small price to pay. Hope this is of some use with Tilly. Ohh Jasper also had tummy problems for a time and they put him on Lanzoprozol (it's what my oh takes for his hiatus hernia) and that worked a treat. I so hope they can get a drug regime that works for her but in my experience I think the love and tlc does just as much. Give Tilly a (gentle) squidge my me and Jasper.
-
Sorry it wasn't better news Nic, but as others have said you now have a starting point for treatment. The vet sounds like he knows what he's doing. All the same we'll be keeping everything crossed that you start to see some progress now that there is a treatment plan. Tilly strikes me as a resilient type of dog and now that she's home with you she must be feeling more secure and that can only help her.
-
Am so sorry the results were what you feared- but at least you can get Tilly started on treatment and hopefully improve her current quality of life, big big hugs to you both andd I only wish there was something I Could do to help xxx
-
So sorry it wasn't better news, but at least it wasn't worse.
I know she is very lucky to have you as her mum. I know you will be able to do the very best for her. I so hope the meds work wonders for her and that she is soon felling much better, filling out and bouncing around again.
Thinking of you lots. (I am doing the night shift in positive thoughts from over here! :005:)
-
sorry nic but hopefully the meds will make her better floyd and i send u and tilly love :luv:

Just to echo what everyone else has said, sorry that the news wasn't better, but sending lots of positive healing thoughts and hoping that Tilly will respond well to her meds so that you can all enjoy more happier times together :-* :bigarmhug:

Hope to hear Tilly improving soon, am thinking of you xxx

She's doing ok thanks guys, she's been out pootering around the garden in the nice weather we've had for the last couple of days but she's still losing weight so still has very little energy and she's sleeping most of the time. We're back at the vet hospital tomorrow morning and then she can start the drugs on Saturday (10 days post surgery).
-
Aw bless her :luv: :luv: Really hoping for you that the treatment takes effect quickly :-*

Get well soon Tilly :luv: Thinking of you Nic :luv:

I have everything here crossed for Tills :luv: :luv: Glad to hear she is pottering about in the garden-it must be a relief to see her taking more of an interest in things and once she started on the meds hopefully it wont be long til she stops losing and starts to regain some of her lost weight. Thinking of you both xx

glad to see she's up and about. Good luck at the vets, hope she responds well to the treatment.

Good luck to you and to Tilly with her drug regime. Hoping it won't be long before she starts to respond to treatment and regain her former strength and vitality.

I'm just back from the vet, she's down to 13.9kg :-\ I've got all her drugs, she has to take 11 tablets every day from now on, she's on 6 prednisone (corticosteroid) tablets alone :o and it's not like I can bung them in some ham or something to give them to her, she's not allowed anything like that. She's going to be rattling.
Starting tomorrow in the mornings she gets prednisone, azathioprine, metronidazole and anti-emetics to make sure it all stays down and then in the evenings it's more prednisone and metronidazole. The other crap part is that I have to go down to Bishop Burton today with Rodaidh until Sunday as it's the block weekend and I can't miss it, I was supposed to go last week but put it back because of Tills being so ill but I still really don't want to leave her, especially when she's starting on all these drugs. I actually feel worse now that I've got all these bottles and boxes of tablets sitting in front of me, it sounds stupid as obviously I've known it all along but it just makes it really 'real' that she's so sick and needs all these drugs, my poor baby :'(
-
Poor Tilly, it's a lot to take but as with everything she and you will get used to it within a few days. I'm sure she will be fine with your OH and he will take good care of her, hopefully you will be so busy the time will fly and it will be Sunday in no time at all.........I know easy for me to say!
Take care and look after yourself as well as Tilly, fingers crossed she starts making an improvement on them and is feeling better soon :luv:
-
Hoping Tilly starts to respond to her medication. :luv: :-*
I understand how you feel, as I hated leaving any any of my dogs when they were ill, but your OH will do a good job of looking after her. :-*
-
:bigarmhug:
Vikki is spot on :-*
The reality of those boxes and bottles must be horrendous :'( :'(
You have to remember that Tilly is one tough little cookie and I have every faith that you will balance out her meds and she will get a good quality of life back - hopefully by the time you get back on Sunday you will already notice a little difference.
Thinking of you xxxx
-
Aww Nic, I really feel for you. From what you've said of your OH, he's going to be fine looking after Tills and she'll be able to have lots of cuddles with dad. You get a chance to think about something else for a few days and hopefully, by the time you're home again, you'll notice a difference from the meds.
Just hope you can concentrate on the course whilst you're there :-*
-
Glad to hear Tilly's out and about in the garden, hopefully some sunshine might be good for her. Fingers crossed she'll pick up once the meds kick in. Big gentle hug from us. :luv:
-
Believe me, soon you will be doing it all in your sleep! Don't think of the tablets as things to fear but as little friends in a bottle!! :-*
-
No, I'd not be wanting to leave her either :-\ but she will be in good hands and hopefully you may just see a bit of improvement when you get back  and a change of scenery will be a boost for you as well - though you probably don't believe that at the moment :-\ gentle squidges sent from my two xx
-
Hope the meds kick in quickly & the precious girlie starts to put some weight back on. She'll be so pleased to see you on Sunday

Other than a few more squidges I couldnt think of another way to put this better xxx You need a break to to be there for Till and am sure the OH will have a long long long list of instructions from you to follow ;)and you are only the other end of the phone if he needs advice. Take care, have a good weekend with Dodie Do Dah and a change of subject will leave you refreshed and ready to tackle the Meds when you get back xxx :luv:
-
You have been under so much stress recently that it will probably do you good to have change of scenery and do something positive with Ro, although I'd be like you and reluctant to leave her. Hope all goes well on the course and that perhaps meds have started to help by the time you get back

I think this is a really good point, a few days away should help you feel a bit more rejuvenated and able to tackle all this with a fresh head. I can imagine seeing all the drugs was very hard but, if they start to help her noticeably, hopefully it will be easier to see them in a different way very soon :luv:
Lots of positive thoughts for Tills and the pills and hope they start to help her feel a bit more like Tilly very soon :-* :-*

my thoughts are with you

Nicola, I really feel for you it must be so hard, specially having to leave her. As others have said she's in good hands with your OH. Hopefully she's over the worst of it now, and will start to improve over the weekend after she starts the meds. Big hugs for you all

Believe me, soon you will be doing it all in your sleep! Don't think of the tablets as things to fear but as little friends in a bottle!! :-*
Exactly as Sheryl says, even though I'd be feeling the same. Those pills will help her get better, hope she makes a big improvement with her treatment :luv:
-
Still thinking of Tilly :luv:

Fingers crossed Tilly reacts well to the meds and in no time at all you'll both see them as something thats the "norm" rather than anything else.

Hope you are satisfied with the job your OH did looking after Tilly while you were gone :shades: :005:
Has Tills started her meds now?? Hope they kick in soon and she starts to improve a bit every day now ;)
He did a pretty good job! She started the meds on Saturday and is not much enjoying having to take them, she's on small food portions and there are too many tablets to put into her food as she just eats around them so they have to go in via the 'headlock, mouth open and hold mouth closed' method which she hates. There's no change in her at all yet unfortunately, realistically it's going to be at least week if not 2 weeks before we'll be able to tell if they're having any effect or not. I was glad to get back to see her again last night :luv:
-
I bet she was pleased to see you too. ;) Glad she's holding her own and really hoping for a dramatic improvement over the coming week or so. :-*

Sorry I haven't updated for a few days guys, thanks for the continued thoughts for Tills :-* Unfortunately she's had a bit of setback and I had to get her back to the vet, she started retching and heaving badly and then she vomited a few times so I had to get her in quite quickly. She was heaving so much she was choking and it was pretty scary. She's had injected anti-emetics and sedatives although the sedatives have worn off now. She seems ok, she's still retching and heaving on and off but nothing's coming up now. They're not sure yet if it's a reaction to the drugs or something else so that's what they're trying to establish just now. It's still early days in terms of the drugs but she's still losing weight but unless something goes wrong again her next appointment is next Friday, if she doesn't start to show some small signs of improvement by then I'm not sure what the next step is. Sorry it's not better news, I know you're all rooting for her and I appreciate it so much.

So sorry to hear about Tilly's setback.......

-
So sorry to hear this :-\
Ensign, my old foster was diagnosed with this last year, and it seems to go up and down; good days and bad. He's on a maintenance dose of prednisone, which they seem to have to adjust on occasion, so he is not losing the weight like Tilly is, in fact he's a bit bloated from the pred. Stress can also send him into a flare up too, at the holidays they had quite a bit with travel and sick family members so he had another episode then :-\
Sounds like it is something that is not cured but managed as you go along, so praying to find that "steady spot" for Tilly :luv: :-*
-
Sorry to hear Tilly's has a setback. Everything crossed here that they manage to stabilise her and let the drugs start to work their magic :luv:

They weren't yet as she only started last weekend, she was due blood and urine tests next week but that's one of the things they're checking out now after this episode.
Thanks again everyone x

No, there's no change in her at all as yet other than still losing weight :-\ We're back at the vet on Friday but I'm not really sure what other options there are going to be. She hasn't had another vomiting/choking episode since last week which is good but other than that she's not improving.

Well it was pretty much as I expected at the vet, she's lost another 300g and he's not happy with her at all. She should have responded by now and basically if it was going to happen it would have done. He has given me a different antibiotic to try and I'm now to give her the 6 daily Pred tablets in one dose as apparently some vets believe that this can make them more effective but I have a feeling we're scraping the barrel now, the vet is very worried about her. She has to go back again next Friday, with her condition as it is he won't leave her 2 weeks without seeing her but if there is no change in her by next week or she's lost more weight then I'm going to have to make a decision as to how long I'm going to let this continue :-\ This whole thing is just unbelievable, I knew she wasn't responding because I'm seeing her every day but I'm just shellshocked about the whole thing.
-
Aw hun I am devastated for you, I had been hoping that there had been some improvement but that as you were with her everyday it wasn't noticeable to you but that the vets would see it. I am here if there is anything I can do to help and have everything crossed that Princess Tilly improves before next weeks appointment and that awful decision isnt required for a long long time. Am thinking of you xxx
-
Awww Nicola, lots and lots of hugs from me. I'm so sorry it's not better news from the vets :'(
I've got everything crossed that the new anti-b's and the different dosage recommendation will do the trick and get Tills on the mend :-* :luv:
Give your girl a hug from me.

Nic, my heart is breaking for you.. I can't believe how suddenly she's become so bad. So wish there was something I could do. I don't suppose there are any other options like drip feeding or anything? I know it's about quality of life but I'm just shocked there are no other options with this disease..
Poor Tilly. it's so unfair on both of you... I'm still hoping madly for some positive change and a bit of good news for you both. :-* :-* :-* :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:

I really am so sorry that it wasn't better news, as for the steroids I know this is different but same drug anyway when my sons Asthma becomes unmanageable his GP puts him on 6 tabs(prednisolone) a day but he has to take them all together, so you may find that giving her the full dose in one go may make the difference, I really hope so :luv:
-
So sorry the news wasn't better, just keeping fingers crossed that the new set of ABs works for her :luv: :luv:

So sorry it wasn't better news for Tilly.

Thinking of you both and sending our love,
Michele & Flo :bigarmhug: :-*
-
Like everyone else I am so sorry that the news isn't more positive Nicola.
Re. steroids when I was first diagnosed with Crohn's almost 30 years ago I used to have to spread the dosage throughout the day however in more recent years the thinking is to take them all in one go - so fingers crossed this might help.
At times I have had to come off all food/drink for up to 2 months at a time and take something called "Ensure" or the "Elimental Diet" both of which are basically cartons of "glop" which is a fully balanced nutritional diet, the aim of which is to give the gut a rest and chance to heal whilst at the same time giving you all the nutrients you need to survive (it's the stuff astronauts used to live on!). I had to take between 6 - 8 cartons a day, they are the size of a travel orange juice carton. I know it's a long shot, but is it worth seeing if there is anything similar that could be used to help Tilly?
Sending mega vibes and hugs at such a difficult time. x
-
So sorry to hear about Tilly's update, i hope the antibiotics will make some improvement, thinking of you both and sending lots of love and healing thoughts :luv: :luv: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:

Are you seeing a specialist? Is there an opportunity to go to a university veterinary hospital? They can sometimes be brilliant
We've got the Edinburgh University Vet School/Hospital here, she hasn't been there but my vet has spoken to one of their internal medicine specialists and that's where her biopsies were sent. Drug wise there really isn't anything other than what she's getting and there is no surgical option. My own vet is very good and he's doing the best job he can but I have asked about going to the Vet School and he said he can arrange it quickly for us so if she hasn't changed by next week I'll do it. I'll also check out the CIMDA website. The thing is it's not that she's not getting the right treatment for the disease, she's getting everything that they can do for it but a certain proportion of severely affected dogs just don't respond to the treatment and it seems like she might be one of them.
She'd already had her first 3 Pred tablets before we went to the vet this morning so I'll give her the other 3 as usual this evening and then start the new antibiotic and the 6-tablet dose in the morning. Diet wise I don't know if there is anything like that Ensure diet for dogs, with the amount my vet and I have spoken about Tilly's treatment and the amount of research I've done though I'd imagine that if there was and it helped in cases of IBD he'd have suggested it. However I'll call on Monday and ask him, thanks for the suggestion Sandra.
Thanks again for all the thoughts and wishes for her.

I know it's a long shot Nicola but just thought it was worth mentioning. :-\ You and Tills are in our prayers.
-
I'm so so sorry. Hoping & praying that Tilly turns the corner this week.
-
I'm heartbroken for you, Nic. :'( The fact you said she wasn't improving wasn't a great sign, but I was really hoping that the vet would be able to come up with something else that could help her. :-\ Here's hoping that giving all her pred in one go actually has the desired effect. Sending lots of hugs to you and Tilly. :-*
xx
-
I am also heartbroken for you, it's so, so hard when they're really poorly, and I know I just felt so helpless with my AIHA doggie, and watched her like a hawk. My heart goes out to you.
I still have all fingers & toes crossed that Tillys drugs will kick in and she'll perk up xxx
-
As everyone has already said - so sorry to hear the news wasn't good from the vets. Will keep all the positive thoughts coming that the change to dosage makes a difference to her this week. Gentle cocker kisses from Mags and gentle hugs from me for your brave girl.
Please make sure you take care of yourself as well.
Lisa x

:'( I can only imagine how upset you must be Nicola :'( Lots of prayers for Tillly :luv: and big hugs to you :bigarmhug:
We are all rooting for your girl :-* :luv:
-
Theres nothing I can add that hasn't already been said :'( Still praying for a miracle turnaround, come on Tilly, your mum needs you :luv:
-
So sorry that the news isn't better - you must be so distraught :'( I really do feel for you and Tilly, you are in our thoughts daily. On a more positive note a change in antibiotic can work wonders, and even as has been suggested, a change in the frequency that medication is given - we hope there is a corner yet to turn lots of best wishes from us xxx
-
I'm so sorry the news isn't good

Only just caught up on this - I'm so sorry the news isn't more positive. You must be worried sick at the moment, I can't begin to imagine how you're feeling but I really hope she starts to respond soon.
I just can't get over how quickly she's gone downhill - which I suppose makes it even harder, not having time time to come to terms with the situation. i really don't know what to say, other than I'm thinking of you and I hope Tilly starts to show signs of improvement soon
Emma

-
Thinking of you both :luv:
-
Really hope there is a bit of change for the better with her that will be noticeable tomorrow :-* Still sending you lots of positive thoughts beautiful Tills :luv: :luv: :luv: :luv:
-
Unfortunately I had to take Tills back to the vet this afternoon, she's not had a great week and last night and today were particularly bad so I rang him and he told me to bring her straight in. He's upped her azathioprine dose and I have to go back tomorrow to collect cyclosporine for her, this is the last option drug wise and as its side effects include d&v she's going to have to go back on the anti-emetics again too. She's lost another 150g from last Friday. We're back again next week, she needs more blood tests because of the azathioprine potentially affecting bone marrow production and also just to monitor her although it may take up to 2 weeks to see if any of it is going to have any positive effect, she's on pretty much the same combination of drugs as a transplant patient.
-
So sorry to hear this Nicola, I'm still hoping for Tilly to improve. Please give her a gentle hug from me :luv:
Keep fighting Tills....we're all praying for you :luv:
-

Thanks hun, and everyone else but tbh I don't know if I'm doing the right thing by her or not... I don't really know what to do for the best, something in her is telling me that she's not ready to give up yet and the vet agrees but I don't want to start just projecting my own hopes onto her and seeing what I want to see. I also don't want the treatment to make her more sick than the disease, I have to wear gloves to handle the azathioprine, that's how pleasant a drug it is and there's a chance that the cyclosporine may make her symptoms worse than they already are.
So far though she's still eating, still licking and still wagging her tail (most of the time anyway) and the vet also thinks that it's worth keeping trying for the time being and we may still be able to pull her around. With her lack of improvement so far though we have had to discuss the worst outcome and I'm really relying on him to tell me when he thinks that medically we're at the end of the road and he doesn't think we're there yet. I know I may come across a bit clinical in these posts but I'm really not, I love her very, very much and I'm heartsick with sadness and worry for her but I don't like wailing about it as these things happen and we just have to try to deal with it. I very much appreciate all the thoughts for her and all the messages I've had even if I don't get a chance to respond to them all straight away.
-
I keep checking back hoping tere is some improvement- send you and Tills lots of love xxx I am surre whatever you are doing it is right my Tilly and I know you have a good relationship with your vet so if they happy to continue and Tilly still fighting then I think you should do what feels right to you xxx

Says exactly what I want to... thinking of Tilly daily and really praying for some improvement. And really - you don't come across as clinical in any of this, just someone trying to do absolutely everything possible to help a much loved member of the family.
-
I think your vet knows you well enough to be brutally honest with you and if he thinks there is a chance I would be doing the same as you.
Tills will let you know when it's time, and I hope it's not for a long time yet - if (doG forbid) it does become time then know you have done everything within your power for her :luv: :luv:
I know you're exhausted and I wish I was up there so you could have a break and a sleep - will call you tomorrow :bigarmhug:
special squidges to Jarv's brown girl xxx
-
Oh Nic, I really don't know what to say. :'( Just keeping everything crossed that this new combination of drugs starts to make a difference. I've no doubt that you'll do the best for her, difficult as it is to know what to do for the best at times like this. :-*
-
Thinking of you and hoping for improvement for Tilly. You are doing everything you can and it is obvious how much you love her. Hugs to you all. :bigarmhug:
-
I know I may come across a bit clinical in these posts but I'm really not, I love her very, very much and I'm heartsick with sadness and worry for her but I don't like wailing about it as these things happen and we just have to try to deal with it.
No, you don't come across as clinical Nicola, you are just telling it how it is, and in layman's terms. We all, especially us who know you, know just how much you love Tilly, and we are all rooting for her. :luv:
When I was telling OH about her, he surprised me by talking about her stick branch fixation, I had no idea how he knew - then he reminded me that Tills had walked around Lochore Meadows with him when he had zoomed off and left the rest of us. :005: He sends loving and get well wishes too. :luv:
-

I agree with Helen. :-\ We all know how much you love Tilly and that you would only do what is best for her no matter how difficult that may be. :'( It must break your heart having to give her all those awful drugs but I am sure Tilly knows you are trying to help her :-\
Keep strong Nic - we are all rooting for you and for Tilly :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:
-
Hoping with all my heart that Tilly turns the corner soon and starts to get better.
Thinking of you both and praying for you.
-
I don't think for one second that you are projecting your hopes on her. You aren't ready to give up the fight because quite obviously neither is Tilly. Believe me, if she decides that she has had enough then you will know. When you are so in tune with your dogs it is blindingly obvious. You will do right by her whatever happens, this I know even from the little I know about you :luv:
When Chloe first became sick, it took 3 near death relapses and changes of drugs and doses before she stabilised. Praying that this is what is needed.....just to get that all important balance right.
Huge .......nay, king size hugs from this little corner of Aberdeenshire to you xxxx :bigarmhug:
-
we think u r doin the right thing here to if the vet thinks there is a chance u take it and im sure tilly wants u to take it to :luv: from the lennon for u all
-
I don't know you, but I know you from your posts over the last few years and I don't for one second think you are projecting hopes. Of course you have hopes, but you're a realist and you're just giving her every chance you can with all the love and respect you have for her.
Having been in a similar situation with a dog her age I know the battle you have and to be honest, whilst I didn't like what happened to my boy, if I had to do it again with one of my current dogs at that age, I'd probably make the same choices and keep trying until a vet I respected told me otherwise - or my dog told me clearly. She'll let you know if she doesn't want anymore and she may never give up - Trev didn't, but until then, keep working as a team and keep trying.. :-* :-* It's totally exhausting and worrying about decisions and what you're doing is a massive factor in that, but try not to question yourself, just trust your gut feeling and Tills to guide you :-*
She's a Strong, dignified, beautiful girl and couldn't be with anyone better, you know that, so I hope that helps a little at the moment - she's had a really cracking time with you to date and is getting everything possible to help her now, what a gift :luv: :luv:.
I wish more than anything I could change things for you both and I'm still hoping very hard for a bit of stabilisation and a little improvement. :-* :-*
xxxx
-
Desperately hope new drugs start to make a difference - stay strong.
-
So sorry you're not seeing the improvement you were hoping for. :'(
Keeping the positive thoughts coming from here. :luv: :bigarmhug:
-
Although I have never met you Nic I am in no doubt how much your lovely dogs mean to you. It must be absolute hell at the moment for you and I had been hoping Tilly would start improving. Im so sad for you and know you will make the best decision for Tilly. All we all can do is the best for our little ones, it's at times like this we wish they could talk, just to let us know how they are feeling.
-
these posts are really pulling me apart i feel so much for you nicola and we all know how much you love tilly. come on tilly lets get back on that road to recovery :luv: :luv:
-
I don't think for one minute anyone would think you were "clinical" Nicola, sometimes the only way to cope it to be matter of fact about things. I am keeping everything crossed that the new meds kick in soon and that Tilly shows some signs of improvement. We are all pulling for you and your special girl, she has the best mum in the world to care for her - sending mega hugs your way. xx

-
Oh Nic :'(
We have had no internet for about two weeks, and this is the only post I will be looking at tonight as I need to go to bed in a minute.
I am so, so sorry that you are still battling on with no improvement.
Like the others, I have never thought of you as clinical (just practical and realistic) and I am sure that you aren't projecting your feelings onto Tilly. And the fact that you are worried about doing that means that you are unlikely to ever do it IYSWIM.
Thinking of you lots from down under. I will take the night shift on positive thinking.
Like Michele, if words could make her better I would write screeds.
Big (((HUGS)))
-
Thinking of you Nic :luv: and of course Tilly :luv: ...you are a very special mummy :luv:
-
Like so many on here I have never had the pleasure of meeting you Nic and your wonderful Tilly, but I can tell you, that you sound such a wonderful mum to Tilly, I can only second what everyone on here has said, I just want to let you know that Tilly is in my thoughts and I am so willing her to pull through.
lots of :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :luv: :luv: to you both
-
Thank you so much to all of you for the lovely posts and thoughts for Tilly, they make me a bit teary every time I read them... although I'm a bit that way inclined these days anyway ph34r
There's no change in her so far this week but it could take up to 2 weeks for the new combination to take effect so we have some time still to go.
-
Lets hope that during the next two weeks she starts to show an improvement, no could be doing more for this girl :-*
-
:bigarmhug: Nicola :luv:
Still keeping all fingers and paws crossed and sending positive healing thoughts to Tilly :-*

I always find that trying to put words down is very difficult to express emotion. You can't see someones eyes in a page and they as the saying goes are the windows to the soul.
From your posts you come across as someone who is very passionate and loves her dogs so much, but also is realistic. All the time you feel there is hope that Tilly will overcome her illness then you have to do whatever you have to. She will let you know when she's had enough.
I can truly empathise with you as I have been in a similar situation but with a different illness and it is soul destroying that feeling of utter helplessness and desperation.
What I'm trying to say in my cack handed way is that we are all with you supporting and rooting for you and Tilly. Hers's hoping that she turns that corner soon. :bigarmhug:
-
Massive hugs to you and Tilly :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:
I am really hoping that the new combi of drugs will take effect soon :-*
-
Hope Tilly will turn the corner soon Nic - it must feel interminable for you (and her) :'( I know you have no choice at the moment but I am filled with admiration at the way you are holding it together :luv:
Sending hugs and healing thoughts from here :bigarmhug:
-
Hope she feels better soon xxxx

Thinking of you both.

Thinking of you both.
Ditto :luv: xxx
-
I wanted to do this :bigarmhug: when I saw you at Crufts but didn't want to break your stoicism. I truly hope that things will start to turn around for Tilly soon. :luv:
-
Still thinking of you all and hoping there is something positive waiting for you both just around the corner :luv:
-
I've been thinking of you both often and am willing Tilly to turn that magic corner. Keeping everything crossed and hoping it happens soon. The drugs really are scarry though, I remember our Azothiaprine came with yellow hazard tape on it and cytotoxic written everywhere. We still have to wear gloves with Jaspers Chlorambucil. Ohh and the joy of toxic poo, my personal favourite. Keep fighting Tilly :bigarmhug: to you both.
-
I look at her photo's and she is so beautiful I just hope she keeps fighting :luv:
-
Really hoping these new drugs work, thinking of you both, - keep fighting Tilly :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:
-
I've been following this Nic but not saying much as everyone is saying it for me.
It must be horrible to see Tills suffering but give it some time to get used to the drugs - it took me almost 5 wks and i was about demented :-\ They are horrible horrible drugs to be putting into your body but i have everything crossed she'll pick up soon and with you there she has the best chance :bigarmhug:
-
Healing thoughts to Tilly and positivity coming your way.
xxxx
-
I know I may come across a bit clinical in these posts
You're not at all - sometimes holding on to those words also helps you keep going - as if just saying them is helping her too - I know how hard and exhausting it is to go through nursing a sick pet - take care of yourself as well
-
I keep checking this for good news! :'(
Come on Tilly!! Please get better :luv: :luv:
-

Couldn't agree more with this - make sure you look after yourself too Nic, the constant nursing and worry etc. really takes it out of you, it sort of sneaks up on you without you realising. :-\
Sending a few more hugs your way (and to Tills too of course :luv:).

Oh yes, we have the yellow cytotoxic warning stickers too and the toxic poo is just brilliant ph34r :P Thanks Deb, I hope Jasper is doing ok :luv: and thank you to everyone else too :-*
We were back at the vet again yesterday, she had blood taken to check her bone marrow production and she's lost a bit more weight but that's no longer a surprise really. She's had lots of accidents in the house this week which I don't mind obviously but it's not good that she really can't hold it in at all, her food is just running straight through her :-\ The vet doesn't think we've missed anything in her treatment so far but he's going to contact the head of internal medicine at the Edinburgh Uni vet school to see if they can suggest anything else and he's also been in touch with an IBD specialist at the Royal Veterinary College in London, he went to a seminar on IBD she gave last year and she's apparently one of the foremost authorities on it in the UK. I have to also thank Weenieangel who sent me a link to this same vet's details a couple of weeks ago http://www.rvc.ac.uk/Staff/kallenspach.cfm Perhaps one of these vets will be able to suggest something else although really I think my vet has done everything he can up to now.
The dogs and I came back to NI yesterday, OH is away with work all next week and I thought it'd be a good opportunity to bring Tills back to see my folks, they really wanted to see her again. We arrived last night and went to the beach today and she seemed to enjoy it, she wasn't able to walk for long but she had a run around and a splash about in the water and she looked happy :luv:
-
So nice to hear that Tilly will be enjoying a little hols :luv: and that you too are having a break :luv:
Take care both of you :luv:

Hope the change of scenery and sea air helps you all. Thinking of you :-*
-
Good to hear about Tilly on the beach, always amazes me no matter how ill an animal is they can summon up enough courage for a waggy tail or a walk on the beach. You go Tilly, hang in there girl and enjoy your hols.
-
It is good to get away and recharge your batteries. Being constantly vigilant is very tiring as I well know. Won't do you any harm to get a Mummy cuddle either!! :luv:
-
Sounds lovely for her - hope the specialists can come up with something - fingers crossed
-
Hope the link to RVC will help in some way :) but great to hear you are both enjoying yourselves best you can and taking a break - Fingers and Paws crossed x

-
Prayers have been said here for your lovely girl Tilly :luv:
-
so sorry to hear about tilly we hope she gets better soon! We've been without our little molly on and off for ten days now coz she's being treated for pancreatitis and tillys symptoms seem to be very similar to our molly. The vets have probably taken this into account but it would'nt hurt to mention it! we really hope your tilly gets better!
-
You are all still in my thoughts Nic :luv:
It's lovely to hear that Tilly enjoyed herself on the beach. I hope you are both getting some much needed TLC from your Mum :luv: And I am still hoping and praying that Tilly will turn a corner soon and show some signs of improvement :-* :-* :-*

Everything crossed Nic - good luck at the vets.

It's not good news unfortunately. When the vet called last week he had spoken to the internal medicine specialist at Edinburgh Uni vet school and the upshot was that he called the lab to have Tilly's biopsies looked at again. Apparently a diagnosis of IBD can be very difficult to tell apart from a diagnosis of gastrointestinal lymphoma, they look very similar and that is what he wanted them to check for. They came back to say that they can't say for absolute certain, the only way to be 100% sure would be to do more biopsies (which he strongly recommended against and I'm not going to do), but the technician is pretty sure they could see signs of early stage GI lymphoma. Apparently it would have been easily missed the first time round as she does still have IBD as well. So I don't know for certain but it looks like Tills has lymphoma, it certainly fits in with her symptoms and the lack of response to any of the treatments for IBD. GI lymphoma is not curable, it's very difficult to treat and I am not going to put her through chemo for the sake of possibly keeping her going a few extra months, not with her other illness as well and when we don't have an absolutely concrete diagnosis.
She is now on one last round of treatment for the IBD, more as a just in case than anything else, but it looks like we are approaching the end of the road. She is still losing weight and she is an ill girl but she's still eating, still licking faces and wagging her tail most of the time, still enjoying a short walk and being out in the garden in the sun and I am just going to make the most of whatever time I have with her and I will let her go before she stops enjoying those things. I've had a feeling that this was not going to end well for a while so I've been coming to terms with it for a good few weeks now but I'm still heartbroken, she's so young and it just seems so very unfair.
-
So sorry Nic, we've all been hoping and praying for better news - as you say, it just isn't fair. :-\ Fingers crossed she can carry on wagging her tail and enjoying short walks for a while yet. My heart goes out to you, it really does. :'(
-
Nicola, I'm so sorry to read this. :'(

Oh nicola, I'm so very sorry to hear this. Throughout this whole ordeal you've handled it with such strength but I know how devestated you must be. It's clear how much your dogs mean to you and you must be heartbroken. It,s not fair but if this is the outcome then enjoy ever minute of your time with tilly. I have everything crossed for you both, that she does respond to this last round of treatment. Take care of yourself and tilly.

-
Hi NIc
I've not posted on here because it's as I expected and one can't be posting negative stuff. Also, only you can go through this and make a decision, and you have to do it alone. It's horrible and totally sucks and it's life but, as someone else said, Tilly lives in the here and now, and I know you'll make any decision necessary while her tail's wagging. Sorry if this doesn't sound good as hopeless with words, but it's written with lots of love Nic. She's a lovely girl.
-
So sorry to read this Nic :'(
Thinking of you and Tilly :luv:
Janey
-
Huge {{hugs}} to you Nicola. Everything else has been said already, but I just wanted to add one thing - you always said that when you saw Tilly on the website you knew she was the dog for you, and I think you were right, you and her were meant to be together, as who else would have been able to love her and care for her with such dignity when she needs it most. It was fate that brought you together, and you have been the most perfect "Mum" to Tills. :luv:
I hope you have a good while together yet, with lots of nice days. :luv:
-
Sorry to read your sad news. I'll pray for a miracle.
-
Can't say anythig else it has all been said, but I just wanted you to know that I am thinking of you, I like many others have been in your position and it ain't nice :'( She is very lucky to have you in her corner and I know that you will make the best of the time ahead, take care you will be in my prayers :luv: Jo

So so sorry Nicola :'( :'(
Hoping that there are many more waggy tail days in the sunshine to come. I know that Tilly will know how loved she is by you. No one could have done any more for her than you have.

I had been hoping for better news, but, like you, feared that it wouldn't be. As you say, it seems so unfair.
However, she has been blessed with a wonderful mum, enjoy some wonderful waggy, sunny days with her.

-
Oh Nicola :'(
I sat here for 10 mins deciding whether to open this thread. I was soo willing it to be good news.
I really don't know what to say. :-\ except from Tilly is a phenomenally lucky girl with a mum who would walk to the ends of the earth for her. The only good thing is Tills won't understand whats happening. Not that it makes it any easier for you.
It's not often things affect me so much but my heart is absolutely breaking for all of you and my screen has gone a bit blurry.
Now go and bask in the sun with Princess Tilly. One of my fave pics of her is on the back of your sofa lounging in the rays of sun :luv:

I'm so very very sorry Nic :'( :'( Life really sucks at times :'(
I really hope that you can take some comfort in the fact that whilst Tilly has been with you she has had the best life she could wish for. She was lucky to find herself in your care and lucky to have someone who has strived to give her the very best and fight for the most suitable outcome for HER. You've given her love and put her first, she could never ask for more than that.
She'll know she's not well and she'll also know that her mummy is looking after her and giving her everything she can. She knows she's very loved :luv:

I'm so sorry to hear your sad news. You are right not to subject her to chemotherapy, although I know how difficult it is to make that decision. It's Tilly's interest that counts.

Having met Tilly a few times I know what a darling of a dog she is.

Nicola, I am sooo sorry about your news. It is heartbreaking to lose a dog at any time, but especially when they are young. Last year my Holly was diagnosed with a fatal illness and I had almost four months with her before I had to let her go. It was tremendously painful at the time but I am now glad I had that time with her to really spoil her and show her how special she was to me. Thinking of you xxx

Only just caught up. I'm so, so sorry to hear the news on Tilly, words cannot express xx Really, really big hugs to you and your lovely girl.
-
Just wanted to say thanks again for the messages, they are really lovely :-* Tills was back at the vet last Friday and we've taken her off the cyclosporine, it wasn't helping, if anything it was making her diarrohea worse. She's now 'just' on Pred, anti-emetics, Zantac and Baytril as she has some colitis-type symptoms. She's doing ok, she has her good days and not so good days but she enjoyed a couple of nice walks over the weekend :luv: We're back at the vet on Friday again.
-
I am pleased to hear that Tills enjoyed her weekend walks :luv:, still sending lots of positive thoughts to you all Good luck on Friday :-* :bigarmhug:

I'm sorry I missed your last post Fiona, I haven't updated this for a while but thought I'd do a quick one now. Tills was referred to the Edinburgh Uni vet school a couple of weeks ago to see the professor of internal medicine - tbh I didn't think they were going to be able to pull a miracle cure out of the bag or anything but I just want to know that I've done absolutely everything I can for her and explored every avenue that we have open to us - basically it couldn't do any harm. We had a very long consultation where he went over her symptoms and treatment to date and he agreed with my vet that it sounded like a case of GI lymphoma but as they can't be 100% certain there was one treatment option we hadn't tried previously which was a new antibiotic specifically developed to treat things like IBD plus a new specialised diet. So we went for that and she had two weeks of the new drug and the completely hydrolysed kibble (which is like white beans). Unfortunately though as I've come to expect the drug hasn't had any effect and having spoken to the professor again today there isn't anything else they can do for Tills so she won't be going back again. With lymphoma there is no cure anyway but even with IBD sometimes there are cases which just do not respond to any treatment. She's now just on a low maintenance dose of Pred, painkillers (just in case) an antiinflammatory and antiemetics.
Depressing as that was to be told, even if it wasn't really a surprise, there is a small amount of goodish news though, Tills has been good in herself these last couple of weeks, she seems to have hit a kind of plateau whereby she's not getting any better but she's also not getting appreciably worse. This can apparently happen in these cases and it's a matter of making the most of it while you can which is what we're doing. She's still very thin and tires easily but she's bright enough most of the time and she's enjoying being out and about in the good weather so I'm just trying to keep her happy for as long as it lasts. Her current diet is the hydrolysed stuff in the mornings and boiled rice and cottage cheese in the evenings, it's about the most hypoallergenic diet there is to try to give her stomach some kind of respite and the rice and cc gives her a bit of variety. Other than that she is being very spoiled, she can pretty much do whatever she wants whenever she wants to do it, we're going to all her favourite places and doing her favourite things :luv:
-
My heart goes out to you Nicola and I wish you both the best times together :luv: It is truely heartbreaking :'(
They give such unconditional love who could ask for anything more precious :luv:
Take care Jo x

This is going to sound really selfish I know but I am not sure if I am going to continue reading this thread as it breaks my heart every time to hear how she is not getting any better. Keep posting pics of her having fun and I will read those but by not opening this I can live in denial and tell myself miss fuzzybutt is doing good :'( :'( :-*
Thats not to say you wont be in my thoughts and I am desperate to get back down your way to visit her for myself and steal some more cuddles :luv:

Been wondering whether there would be an update on Tilly each day, but knew you'd let us know when there was some news. So sorry this last avenue hasn't proved more positive for her.
One of the amazing things about dogs I think is their ability to live for the moment, and it sounds like you are doing everything possible to make each and every moment as special as it can be for her :luv:
:bigarmhug: for you Nicola, and for your unfaltering devotion & determination to do everything you can for your girl.

Its been hard to keep Tilly out of my thoughts the last few weeks, as any of us that love our dogs dread finding something wrong with them and then having to make so many painful decisians, so your thread has really brought it home to me that we don't know whats round the corner and we just have to live for now and enjoy what we have.
I suppose its a human failing that we think about whats next or what is to come, thankfully our lovely dogs really are able to live in the moment, just be, and make the most of whatever they are doing at the time especially if its something good like rolling in fox poo! I'm sure Tilly will just be loving this warmer weather and having the time being close to you and made to feel cherished and special.
My thoughts go out to you and Tilly and hope you have many happy hours together :luv:
-
Sorry to hear that there are no more paths to take :'( but you know now that you have done your very best for her, you are such a brilliant mum to her and Tilly has been a real fighter and I wish you many more precious moments together :bigarmhug:
-
I don't have any words that will help but just wanted to say I check this thread frequently, like everyone else, hoping for some miracle.
Please give Tilly a gentle hug from me - I know I've not met her in person but I've seen so many lovely pictures of her and have enjoyed her latest holiday ones too.
Thinking of you

Other than that she is being very spoiled, she can pretty much do whatever she wants whenever she wants to do it, we're going to all her favourite places and doing her favourite things :luv:
I did this with Wilf when he was 6 months old - we weren't sure then if he was going to live beyond Christmas after being diagnosed with a rare malignancy but I was lucky and he's still here. One day I remember watching how happy he was completely demolishing the garden but I didn't care and it was quite a liberating experience because it made me happy to watch him do it.
I hope you can still have very many happy moments with Tilly {{{hugs}}}

That's so true, I was out in the garden with her really early the other morning, just me and her, and we saw a rabbit sitting alongside the fence that borders the woods, she looked at me and I knew what she was thinking so I just said 'go get it!!', well she chased that rabbit right up the garden and along the wall at the back until it got through a hole in the old gate and I was laughing out loud watching her do it :lol2: She came back down looking all pleased with herself with her tail wagging like mad so she'll be chasing as many rabbits as she wants while she's enjoying it :luv:

Thanks guys. Tills isn't doing so well tonight :-\ She's not been great these last couple of days anyway and I noticed today that her lymph nodes in her groin are swollen, I could see them sticking out so I had her usual weekly vet appointment brought forward to tomorrow but she pre-empted me and we're just back from the emergency vet. I put her in the kitchen to keep Caoimhe company for 20 minutes earlier as I had to nip to the shop up the road and when I got back she'd pulled the bin out and eaten most of the contents, including a garlic bread (Caoimhe was crated so I know it wasn't her, she's under ultra security measures as she's in season so there's a cage and 3 closed doors between her and Ro if I'm not here). I had to get her to the emergency vet straight away, she started being sick in the car on the way and kept on going when we arrived. They gave her a dose of anti-inflammatories, steroids and lots of antacids and I have stuff to syringe into her overnight, there isn't much else they could do for her, we just have to let it all pass through as it undoubtedly will. She's really sick now, she can barely move other than to retch or strain so I'm going to be carrying her out to the garden all night I think. I feel so stupid for leaving her with access to the bin but she's only done that once before and I had it set in a recess under the counter and the lid turned into the wall, I honestly don't know how she managed to pull it out :-\
As well as that the vet checked her lymph nodes in her groin and neck and they are in her words 'massively swollen' which I'm worried sick about, that really really is not good at all :'( I'll be on the phone to her usual vet when they open at 8.30 in the morning.
-
Im so sorry Tilly isnt doing too well :'(
please dont blame yourself for her getting in the bin these things happen and as you said shes not done it before. Its impossible to think of everything.

I spoke to one of Tills' usual vet's colleagues this morning as it turned out he's not in until 2 o'clock today, they said just to keep monitoring her and they'll get Peter to call as soon as he gets there so that's what I'm waiting for now. I'm taking her back in this afternoon anyway. Last night was pretty bad, she was sick and had explosive diarrohea all night, I don't think I really got any sleep at all beyond dozing for half an hour here and there. I'm fine though, I'm just really worried, her lymph nodes are so big they're clearly visible.

Just heading to bed. Will be thinking of you and Tilly.

Thanks again everyone, your thoughts for Tills mean a lot :luv:
The vet aspirated the lymph nodes, she looks like she's got an apple under the skin of each back leg and she's swallowed two gobstoppers :-\ They're going to be looking for lymphoblasts which would confirm the suspected diagnosis of lymphoma that we've got. At least she's stopped being sick and she managed to sleep for a few hours this afternoon so hopefully the effects of last night have worn off. She's tired and sore but you'd never really know it, she's such a stoic girl, she never makes a fuss about anything and she was still wagging her tail at the vet and the nurses and trying to lick them :luv:
-
keep on battling Tills.
:bigarmhug: for you Nic.

Come on Tilly, never stop trying to get better :luv: :bigarmhug: hope you both have a better night tonight xx

-
Bless her - hope she's more comfortable and does begin to show some more improvement soon
-
Last night was a bit better but she still has severe diarrohea so we were in and out quite a few times. She always has it to some extent these days but the bin raid seems to have sent the inflammation out of control so there's not much we can do other than hope that it settles back down at least a bit again. She's definitely getting more rest and seems a bit more comfortable today though... wish I could say the same for me ph34r

Just been catching up with the site. I can't imagine what you are going through Nicola, as reading your posts on the Tilly over the last couple of years its plainly obvious she is the apple of your eye. Pictures of that very elegant looking girl always brings a smile to me and probably countless other COLiers. All I can say is we are all thinking of you and Miss Tills. :luv:

Thanks again all... Tills is better than she was last week. I'm considering sleeping upstairs tonight for the first time since the bin raid last week and just coming down to check on her a couple of times, last night she only needed out twice so I'll see how she goes as the evening wears on. In herself she's ok, I can't really say any more than that, she's not as good as she was but she's not as bad as it could be :-\ It's so difficult to judge, she just sucks up whatever is thrown at her and keeps going but it makes it very hard to know how she really feels.
-
Pleased she seems to have overcome the bin raid, lets hope the sun keeps shining for her :luv:
-
Good to hear Tills is better than last week Nicola, hope you manage to have a decent night's sleep and she continues to stay well ;) :luv: :bigarmhug:

My heart truly goes out to you and your little wow, I know EXACTLY what you are going through and the gut wrenching anxiety that goes with this situation, please try to sleep as much as you can and eat properly,, last thing she needs is someone so jaded and 'out of it' that things become out perspective and so depressing there is nothing but sorrow and darkness, and try generate positive feelings for this little sick dog.
If you get really down talk to someone who understands, who has been there, I did that once in the past at a VERY bad moment, and trust me, it helped more than I dreamt possible, I hope you have people around you to turn too......I have everything crossed for Milly....Be focused and concentrate on what you can do for her not what you cannot
-
I keep looking at this thread and really have nothing helpful to say. Just wanted to say that both of you are never far away from my thoughts. :bigarmhug:
-
I have not been on here for a while, but I just read your update on Tilly and just wanted to say I'm glad she's feeling OK. You're in my thoughts. Sending lots of :luv: to you both
-
Hoping Tills is holding her own and your getting some sleep, :bigarmhug: to you both.
-
:luv: Glad she has recovered a bit Nicola :luv:
I remember my 12 months well on the sofa with Louis :luv: but it did jade me Nicola, so if she is ok to go through a few hours then get to bed for proper rest :luv:
:bigarmhug:
-
Thanks Patsy and everyone else, you're all really lovely :-* I have moved back upstairs, I was like a zombie sleeping on the sofa again and being woken up 3 or 4 times a night, I've slept downstairs most of this year so far and it does get pretty wearing. Thank god I work from home but even so I've not exactly been productive recently :-\ She does still need out most nights but she cries at the bottom of the stairs so I can get down to her. I've tried having her upstairs with me but she won't settle unless Rodaidh is there too and Caoimhe won't sleep downstairs on her own so I have to have all 3 of them and they all insist on sleeping on the bed which means I get woken up anyway as Caoimhe and Ro have a constantly running competition to see who can push the other one out of the way and sleep right on my face plus with C having been in season until the weekend it wasn't possible to have them all together anyway.
We haven't really had the same heatwave you guys have down south so she's not been suffering too much in the heat. Her lymph nodes are still very swollen, they haven't gone down at all as far as I can tell and that's my main concern. Our vet is back from holiday this week so she's got an appointment to see him again on Thursday.
-
Got everything crossed for Thursday for you :luv:
We had the same problem with Louis not settling upstairs, its a nightmare isnt it :-\ So glad you have moved back upstairs though, you must be exhausted with sheer worry anyway without the addition of no sleep on top. :'(
Healing thoughts for Thursday for Tilly :luv: She is a special girl Nicola :luv:
-

Good luck at the vets tomorrow - lots of positive thoughts being sent Tillys way :luv:
Glad you've finally made it back upstairs! When Brook was ill, I ended up 'sleeping' in the bathroom with him for the week - he wouldn't settle anywhere else and I was terrified I wouldn't hear him if he was sick or pulled his drip line out. I dread to think how much coffee I had to consume that week to get through each working day :005:

I have to take Tills back to the vet school tomorrow, my vet is concerned at her lymph node aspirate results and because there's been no change in the swelling; she's also got a slightly elevated temperature and her latest blood results aren't great either. She may have to go back on some drugs (not chemo, I'm not doing that) but he wants me to talk to Professor Simpson again first so he got us an appointment for 10 tomorrow morning. He said they might want to keep her in over the weekend but tbh I'm not really keen on that :-\
-
Hope she's OK Nic - will be thinking about you tomorrow :-*
-
I hope the new meds help, and that she gets to stay at home over the weekend - she'd be less stressed, even if it does mean you having to make several journeys.

Just checking in to see how you got on today
-
We weren't able to see the Professor in the end today, seems like it was a day for emergencies. We did see another of the internal medicine specialists though and she wanted to keep Tills in over the weekend but she wasn't absolutely insistent on it and as it was my choice I decided against it. She's back on her high dose of Pred which is crap as she doesn't react particularly well to it but we're kind of between a rock and a hard place. We're going back to see the Professor on Monday when he'll go over her blood results etc. with me properly.
-
Poor Tills.
Glad she is home with you for the weekend though. I'm sure she will do better with you than the left in the vets.
Be thinking of you Monday.

Sorry I didn't update this yesterday but there isn't really anything to say as they phoned me at 8.30am to cancel the sodding appointment again ::) I know she's not technically an emergency case now and they're specialists and very busy but still, it's been a bit of a faff. We rescheduled for tomorrow at 11.30 and if they try to cancel it again I'm going to turn up and sit in the waiting room anyway ph34r

Oh blimey Nic, sorry things aren't going too smoothly at the moment, can only imagine what it is doing to your blood pressure!! Having just read through this thread, I just wanted to send you all my positive support and best wishes for Tilly's improvement.
Tilly may be very ill but she has one of the most astute, sensible and loving mums she could ever hope for. I am full of admiration for the devotion you give your dogs and I believe Tilly could not be in safer hands.
I wish Tills strength and lots of healing thoughts to win her battle.
Keep fighting beautiful girl :luv:
-
Thanks everyone, well they've kept her in this time. They're really concerned about her lymph nodes and she's been finding it difficult to swallow at times and her choking/retching episodes have been getting slightly more frequent so they want to check that out. They're also going to run more blood tests and do another abdominal ultrasound. I don't know when I'm going to get her back again, he couldn't tell me for certain as it really depends what he needs to do but probably a couple of days. Rodaidh's looking for her already, I took him for a walk and he's normally bombing around like a rocket but he just trotted beside me for most of it and as soon as we got home he flew into the house and ran around looking for her.
-
Oh Nicola, we are thinking of you! Hope shes back home safely soon xxx

Thank you very much for the lovely thoughts and comments everyone. I've spoken to the Professor this morning and they want to keep her there until tomorrow. They're waiting for bloodwork results to come back and she should be going in for an ultrasound and x-rays about now. I'm not really very happy about her staying there again tonight, I wanted to bring her home today but there doesn't seem to be much I can do :-\

any news?
-
I got her back home earlier today, she's all shaved on her neck where they've been taking bloods and all around her underside and up her sides from the ultrasound. She's pretty out of it, they've put her on more drugs plus the Pred and they're really knocking her for six. Her WBC count is all over the place and her platelets are low so they're trying to stabilise her a bit. The levels of eosinophil cells in her intestines (from the IBD) are through the roof. She's been asleep nearly all day but she was really happy to see me when I went to collect her, as I was her :luv:
-
Glad to hear Tils is home for the weekend :D

Happy that she's home with you.

Really glad she is home and I hope they can stabilise her. It sounds like she has a great team looking after her. It's always the shaved patches that get me the ginger one had go faster stripes after his scans and his neck just starts to grow back and they shave it again. As my late nana would say he looks a right buggers muddle :005: Hope Tilly is more herself this morning.

-
Hii Nicola,
Just wondering how Tilly is today?
Tracey
-
She has come around since the weekend although I can see a change in her. She's sleeping a lot and she didn't come running last night when I clinked the lid of their treat jar (she gets some of her kibble instead of a gravy bone) and that's the first time she hasn't reacted to that but then again she flushed and chased a load of pheasant poults up the garden the other morning while Rodaidh watched her aghast so the spirit is still there!
-
I would imagine phessies beat out a few bits of kibble any day :005: :luv:
Seems to be like Ensign, one day at a time....
-
So pleased Tilly is feeling a little more like her old self ;)
I've been wanting to enquire the last couple of days as she was on my mind. I really hope she continues to improve and makes a full recovery :luv:
