Title: Cockers in the car and keeping it clean!
Post by: laurenollie on March 11, 2010, 10:02:59 AM
Just wondered how everyone else coped with their dogs in their cars! Ollie sits (or should i say travels!) on the back seat he's fastened in just by a seat belt. On the bottom part of the seat he has a towel and fleece blanket on top and then on the back rest of the seat another towel! But he leaves so much mess in my car!!! Mud everywhere, sand if we go to the beach, and of course fur!!!!! I hate cleaning it so don't do it very often.

I cleaned it the other day and thought we would try Ollie in the boot so at least his mess would be confined there - he seemed to hate it and howled the whole journey! I've tried a soft crate but it was a very tight fit and he hated that so thats a no go!

So how do you cockers travel? Could I get Ollie used to the boot and how? Or if not can anyone recommend anything to keep the seats well protected and cleaner?

we used to have to have Jarv on the back seat on his harness and the car was a perpetual tip - we changed to an estate car and now he's in Jail behind a dog guard.  It took him a while to be 5 feet away from us (we persevered with the odd tantrum bid for freedom....mind you OH has made him a platform with his bed on it so he can easily see out the windows - not as soft as it sounds - it allows you to stash loads underneath his bed and out of sight  :lol2: )

our friends have the seat hammock/sling for their car which they say works really well - think they spent a fortune on one from Orvis but it's really good quality  :D

oh and 3 weeks after we got the car OH stopped at some lights and a car drove right into the back of the car - my greatest fear with Jarv in there - he was absolutely fine, a bit shaken but he wasn't hurt thank the lord (car's a mess though  >:D )

we use a bog box.

I really like it as it means the dogs cant just jump out when the doors opened so if we had an accident and someone opened the back of the car they wouldn't be able to run out spooked and into the road.

Its also good as its plastic sided so they cant really shake mud all over the car.  :D

I have a Barjo Dog Guard and Tailgate, which keeps them confined and safe and also means they can't just jump out when I open the back.

dog guards and tailgate in the boot, before that it was a cage.

If you can't use the boot, I'd go for a hammock or the Dog Bags are great and attach to the seatbelts on the back seat.  Available at the Roof box company - there's lots of threads on here about them and photos I've put on in the past. They often have seconds selling for a song in their bargain basement too.

Hmmm, isn't putting them in the roof box a little cruel?  ph34r :005: Mind you, I've seen Louie after his muddy puddle sessions (and madam Roxy after being trained by the master!!) and it could be a good option  :005: te he he!!  :005:

That is my fear so he was still attached to his seatbelt which did restrict his movement a bit which i think is another reason why he didn't like the boot. I didn't just want him rattling around.

I woulder if i make a few small trips with him in the boot (after buying a longer seatbelt!) with kongs and a few treats would get him used to it? It would be so much easier.

I don't think the dog bags would help, maybe if we had used these from he being small, he hates not being able to look out the window and i think being restrcited would almost kill him!!

Off to look for a longer seatbelt and some perserverence skills for me now!

PS putting him the roof box would probably much quieter for me!!!

Hi There - I travel with Marco either on the front seat on a blanket or in the back seat witha waterproof cover on. He hated his harness for the car as it was too restictive so I know put the seatbelt through his extending lead handle, and leave his lead on but with about 40cm of lead so he can stand or sit and move about - it was a lot cheaper than some of the other options on the market and it meant he could jump straight in and be clipped in in a couple of seconds.

I only have a little PUG107 so would be a bit stuck trying to fit in a cage or if I put him in the boot he would be squished!!!

Mine were always behing a dog guard, then we got a saloon, and I bought a hammock type thing for the back seat.  BEST BUY EVER!  Loop it over the front and back headrests, and there are slots for the seatbelts to go through.  Got mine off Ebay, not expensive and gathers everything up in there and you just pull out and shake!

The dog bag has a "netted" area at the top, so depending how high the seats to the window is, suprising how much they can see out  ;)

Sounds like a hammock could be worth looking at though EBAY item here (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CAR-REAR-SEAT-COVER-HAMMOCK-WATERPROOF-DURABLE-FOR-DOG_W0QQitemZ350267855891QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item518d975413)

Looked at these but I only have a 2 dorr car so would have to constanley attach and re attach to get him in - but to me it soundls like all the hair/grit/sand could easily travel off it and get undernerth then I'm back to square one with the muck!!! Its the muck i'm trying to control better - rather than Ollie!!! How do you find it for making the car mucky?

Our boy travels in the boot with a dog guard behind the rear seats.  I also have a boot divider so that he has one side but I can still put bags on the other.  :D

I have a heavy duty boot protector down on the floor and then on his side there is vet bed down.

He's been a bit (well a lot  >:D) naughty and managed to chew the leather on the back seat - just a small patch that he could reach.  A couple of days ago I spread Tabasco sauce on the area and thankfully he's now chosen not to chew that anymore!  :011:

Roxy goes in the boot in her dog bag. Have also had it on the back seat too. It keeps all the mess inside and is wipeable/hoseable. I put a blanket in which I wash.

She used to be a nightmare when she had a harness on back seat but she settles really well now.  Mine was a cheaper second and was perfect! I highly reccommend it them!!!

I use it in a 3 door, I use it for going to the beach, and I can honestly say it keeps the dirt inside it and off the seats, it moves when you flick the seat forwardI find it easy to use even with my two wiggle bottoms!

Thats interesting to know - thank you! I've bought a longer seatbelt so will try that and then look into the hammocks too!

We don't get those hammocks here, soooooo.... I got my MIL to make me one (good thing she's so handy with the sewing machine  ;) I can't put the straps on, though cos Bailey chews right through them in a matter of minutes  >:D If I leave the straps off, he settles down and goes to sleep.  ::)

Misha and Roly go in the boot (have dog guard) and Lexi goes in a crate on the back seat.  Lexi used to go in the boot with the other two, but that was before she and Roly began singing their duet everytime we went out      Now Roly is a solo artist.  I have the boot lined with a waterproof liner and the waterproof seat covers for the back seat.

If I'm travelling with just one dog, both Misha & Roly will sit/sleep in the footwell of the passenger front seat.  Lexi like so to sit up on the seat, so has a dog harness and seat belt.

Maggie used to be on the back seat with a waterproof cover on it but a couple of months ago I got a Dog Bag off the back of reviews on here and she loves it.... soon as I put her in there she works out whether we're just popping down the road to the park, and if it feels longer she settles down and goes to sleep.

Mine go in the boot and make it very mucky and slather the back windscreen with their dribbly little mushes so no help I'm afraid. I have on occasion thought about strapping 'em both to the roof of the car, ears flapping in the wind...  :lol2: :lol2:

In my car BMW estate the 4 are crated ( the boot is huge and easily takes 2 crates) this really helps keeping the car clean and tidy but OH car we just let them jump in the back he also he an estate   but that has cockers kisses all over the window  :005:

I vary with the dogs, if I just have 1 or 2 of them with me and they're clean I let them sit on the back seat or the passenger seat. If I have all 3 of them or they're manky Caoimhe goes in her crate in the boot, Tilly goes in the boot beside her and Rodaidh jammy sod face travels in the front with me (he'd just jump over the seats anyway ::)) but only if he's clean, if he's manky he gets shoved in the boot too and told to stay there in the voice of doom :005:

I usually manage to keep the worst of the mud confined to the boot but Rodaidh and Caoimhe's hair still gets everywhere.

Mine all have crates in the car...........currently a BMW estate car, soon to be Mondeo estate, lots more room...........yayyyyyyy!!

Back seats down - two in the boot area and one on the folded down seats.

If Moo's on his own he will happily sit on the front seat covered by a towel and lead wrapped very loosely round the head rest.

We have a car boot liner, vet bed, towels, dog guard & recently just had the Barjo tailgate guard fitted, which is fab  :luv:  I feel much happier now because its impossible for them to jump straight out from the boot now.  :luv:  All in all the car is now almost dirty dog proof  :lol2:  apart from their little kisses  :-* on the tiny back side windows.  :shades:

Ours go in the boot, I'm in the process of trying to get a tailgate made by a friend so will be happier if I can get that done. The boot does get dirty but nothing a quick valet can't sort, much rather pay someone to remove all the dirt and hair than try and do it myself!

How about buying one of those covers that goes over the whole of the seat and then putting a blanket on over the top?

There is only one cage in the Porsche and that is not designed to protect my doggy... So Paula has to share the footwell with the fire-ex :shades:
In our every-day VW Multivan she usually prefers the footwell or the space behind the front seats.
Only on long trips I usually fix her on the backseat (with her harness and the safety-belt) in a position as on the pic below.

She looks very comfy!!
I've gone past caring if I'm honest! ph34r :005: With 2 kids aswell, the car is always a hole! I do have waterproof covers on the front seats, as Smartie sits on the passenger seat, but likes to check the drivers seat is comfy and well adjusted before I get in!!! :005:
Apart from that, there is grass and sand all over the carpets, and mud splatters all over the windows and dashboard!
Now if we're talking about keeping the car clean with kids...................!!!!

I'm pretty thick i think - when you say the boot do you mean the far back part of an estate waggon buyt it's still inside the car ?(or station wagon as we say here) what do you call the trunk (that's what we (in Canada) call the thing with that is part of a sedan & which you only have access to from the outside behind the car - not clear I fear. Anyway my little guy mostly stays in the backseat with a harness on for highway trips &gets the car dirty.

Thanks for all the responses guys!

I've purchased a longer seatbelt and have come to the conclusion that the more times he travels in the boot the more he will get used to it! He is noisy in the car anyway but at the minute his barks are different so I think he is a little more anxious but I think once he gets used to it he'll love having his own little space and hopefully I'll only have a mucky boot which i can easily cope with!

I'm going to do a few mins driving round each night/day, give him some yummy treats in there and hope for the best!! if he doesn't get use to it its back to the back seat for him and loads of mess for me!!!!

I really don't have a problem in the car, but then we only have 1 dog (so far!) The seats are leather, a large-ish piece of vetbed covers half the back seat, Morgan is harnessed in and usually goes to sleep. Occasionally get sand on the floor after beach outings but that's about it.  ;)

Bella travels in a 36" crate, with carpet stuck to the base so she doesn't slide about. It is permanently on the back seats of my Fiesta. The front seats wedge it in. Being a 3 door hatchback, the boot's not an option. The car gets is filthy, but at least the windows don't get slobbered over as they did when I had Fern (She just travelled on the back seat, but we never went very far). It means I don't have to give anyone a lift anywhere  though :005:

We bought an Estate car it only made sense seeming as we have 2 dogs, OH goes fishing and plays golf so we need the space. dread to think what will happen when kids come along, we will drive a double decker bus  :005 As for the dogs, on very short journeys they tend to sit/lay on the back seat or foot well. For Journeys that are more than 10 mile they go into their mesh crate, it takes up the boot, depending on which way ts positioned. It has various zips though so you can access from dogs from front, side or back ( even the top ) it has pockets on it too, very handy, both dogs easily fall asleep in this, and you hardly even know there are in the car with you!! unless One starts mounting the other!  >:D :005:
