Title: what in your opion is the next best food
Post by: irened on April 08, 2010, 02:20:51 PM
my pup is only two weeks old so not an urgent anser needed.  His breeder will start him on Burns food and we will be supplied with a supply of this when we pick him up.

Unfortuatly this food is not easily available in my area and although I have the option of buying online I just wondered if there oare other foods that measure up to burns and maybe a bit cheaper.

If you read through some of the threads on this board you'll get an idea of foods that are recommended but some good dry complete foods other than Burns that you could look at are James Wellbeloved, Healthy Paws, Robbie's, Arden Grange, Barking Heads and Orijen. Chances are if you can't get Burns locally you'd probably have to order most of those online except JWB if you have a Pets at Home nearby as they stock it.

We feed Royal Canin, dogs coats are great on it.  I personally think you only get what you pay for, Burns/RC etc maybe expensive, but you do feed smaller amounts than cheaper foods, plus if your pup is doing well on Burns, then I wouldn't change it, just get some in now before he/she comes home, then you'll be well stocked up.

Chloe was on Bakers puppy when I first got her, but I'd already decided to feed her Burns, especially as my vet sells it. I started off gradually changing her onto Burns mini-bites, then at about 6 months, changed her onto Burns adult. It suits her perfectly so I stick with it. I buy it in 15k bags on line. It doesn't suit every dog, you may find you have to experiment a bit till you find the right one, but I don't think you can go far wrong in trying Burns for starters  :005:

Lots of good foods listed above...

Burns is a good food and suits lots of dogs but neither of my two got on with it, they both lost too much weight, their coats lost condition and they both got a bit of scurf (doggy dandruff).

One of my dogs is allergic to ingredients in JWB so they were on Chappie for a while but are now on Healthy paws which suits them but their coats aren't quite as good as they were with Chappie however, they do smell better :005:

There are lots of good foods out there but not all of them suit all dogs.
