Well....Holly had her first visit to the groomers last friday, what a disaster!!
I kind of had a feeling that she wouldnt be very erm...accomodating shall we say!
I told the groomer she would be scared of the clippers and explained that grooming had recently become a jumping twirling chewing nightmare.
So off I trotted with hubby and the two boys for lunch in town....45 mins later the groomer phones to say she cant do any more ph34r
The groomer had managed to trim her legs body but couldnt get near her head. She tried tieing her up loose, tight, not atall but nothing worked!!! she could only do it with the clipper guard on so her furr in still a bit longer than Id of liked.
Any advice for a second visit? anyone else's dogs act like this? any idea what I can do to calm her down!
She is still young so Im hoping she will get use to it and calm down...but I doubt she will :-\
Shes such a dumb blonde :005:

Would she be better if you were there holding her / comforting her do you think?
Or would she make more of a fuss with 'Mum' as an audience??

We gave it a go when I went to pick her up but it made no difference, held her etc but the groomer really had no chance! I joked about giving her valium, and the groomer told me that some places do give dogs tranquilisers to calm them, no way would I do this!
2 lovely groomed yorkies walked out infront of her >:D

oops - Misty says silly sis! :005:
Where is the pics? :luv:
Misty goes to the groomers in a fortnight so hopefully she will behave ph34r

Shall we just say the pics dont do it justice!!....quite a few big long bits! and one leg seems a bit shorter than the other!
She did only charge me 1/2 price! as youve said I think she done really well under the circumstances! maybe I was expecting to much for a first visit!

Not sure what I was expecting but she looks lovely and I wouldn't have looked at the photo and thought she was half done :luv: :luv: :luv: - Indie has a rival for the worst bitch to be groomed then :shades: :005:

Awwwww, bless her she doesn't look bad. Was this her first ever visit to the groomers? I only say this as I do puppy inductions for pups to get them used to the goings on in the Salon. This involves a brush/bath and trim if needed. Plus getting used to any equipment like the clippers/table etc etc. That means just running them near the dog and then maybe progressing to holding them against the dog without blades to get them used the the sound and feel of them. They also get lots of cuddles which is the best bit. :shades: :005: It might be worth asking your groomer if they would do something similar for her. They only need to be short sessions and she could maybe do a bit more each time and build up to it that way. Also if she's touchy around her head I personally would just take it down with thinners, so this could also be an option for your groomer.

Awww Holly is just :luv:
I totally agree with what 5scompany says about familiarisation, Pops went for four visits to experience the sights and sounds of the salon and was just brushed on the table and things before they got the scissors out on visit 5 and she had a little trim all over. She now practically pulls the OH over to try and get in the salon :005:
Am sure with some "social calls" Holly would soon calm down and enjoy her pampering :luv:

Spot on advice here ;) It's like taking her back to basics of brushing - you gain their trust with a brush. The same for going to the groomers and getting use to the noise of clippers. In my experience this def. works ;)

thanks & yes it was her first visit, the groomer didn't suggest any of the above just 'she will get use to it'....think I'll try a different one next time & do as you've suggested, Ive got clippers at home so could try and desensitise her to the noise at least.
Im tempted to do it myself but dont want her to look like a sheep.
Yes Jo shes very grown up, ran off with the neighbours black lab today, she likes them big :005: & hes massive!! No idea what they were up to, hes way to big for any funny business thankfully... shes currently flat out sleeping in her crate!!
Is Misty going to 'her grans' to get groomed?
Forgot to say the groomer also started a rant on how all cockers are loopy especially orange roans ph34r I just went along with it, because quite frankly I dont care about her opinion :005: :shades:

Aww, she still looks so cute. Pretty little thing. The groomer who did Fraser (second attempt after a disastrous down to the wood first try at 7 months) took him in the morning to get to know him and train him a bit. I picked him up in the afternoon. I liked that she took time to work with him on the first visit, so he had a good experience.
-
My last cocker, Sophie, was very nervous, she fainted once at the groomers and frightened them to death. After that they used to use aromotherapy on her before they started grooming her and she was fine from then on.
-
My old boy Pepper was a nervous dog and the groomer refused to have him back as he cried very loudly the whole time he was there :'( :luv: :luv:. So I bought some clippers and a book and just did him and our other one myself :lol2:. Millie loves having it done so much that I struggle to keep her awake ::) but Charlie doesn't like it even with gradual introduction. I do him over a few days instead of in one go and give him lots of treats for being so brave :luv:.
-
Awww - she has such a beautiful face :luv: The pics are far better then I'd imagined from how you'd described her earlier. She Penny (11 months) will not let the clippers near her, inspite of having had 3 visits, so just gets done with the scissors. This is fine at the moment as she is still fairly silky, but I don't know how we will manage if she gets thick and wooly - maybe spit is the way forward :005: :005:. The groomer is lovely, but said she was a complete drama queen and that passers by must have thought a dog was being murdered!

No - taking Misty to a salon for a bit of pampering :D. Hopefully she will behave! Holly likes the boys then :005:

I will groom Holly for you (and steal her, run away and keep her forever!!) :luv: :luv:
She is beeeeautiful! :luv: :luv:
I would definately change groomers - both ours love going for a wash and trim as the groomers love our two so much - they always comment they love a cuddle up close :luv: Llewelyn is a bit of a scaredy cat with us with the brush but is fine with other people.
(and your other point, we get constant comments about solids and cocker rage, it frustrates me so much but I take no notice or correct people who insist on spouting this rubbish)
-
Excellent if you have your own clippers you can do a bit with her daily and build it up yourself. Why not give it a go yourself. What's the worst that could happen. It's hair it'll grow back. ;) :005: and practice makes perfect anyway. :D Oh and don't get me started about people and there OPINONS on Cockers. >:(
-
Bless her, I hope she's over her ordeal now she looks lovely :luv:
Mole was very unsure and used to shake when we had the clippers out for Baja, so knowing he would end up being clipped we just kept the clippers turned on for periods of time so he could get used to the noise, then gradually got him closer to them whilst they were on and then treated him when he went near them and gave them a sniff and so on.
I started using the clippers on him just a couple of seconds at a time and built it up gradually over months, now I can clip him and take him to the groomers ad he is fine
He's come a long way from the shivering shaking thing he used to be when he heard them turn on, good luck
-
ok ok I have bowed to the pressure 5scompany :shades:, Im gunna get her use to the clippers then have a go once the furrs grown a bit, probably for the best in the long run, I can get her use to getting clipped then the groomers can do a proper job! I do my sons and OH's hair and they manage to leave the house!
WATCH THIS SPACE :005:
Thankyou for all the nice comments she is a cutey, ditssy but cute and quite obedient! likes the boys a bit to much, if they arent taking any interest she cocks her leg up :005: :005:
Wish Misty good luck, looking forward to the pics :-*

Shes adorable anyway.
Personally i wouldnt use that groomer again, and would do as others have suggested as desensitive her to the clipper with the use of treats.
-
Oh she looks adorable not a 'disaster' at all - she is absolutely gorgeous!!! :luv:
