Vegas was unwell yesterday with lethargy & vomiting. He didn't want to go for walks, hasn't picked up a toy (unheard of for him as he loves to carry things about) and didn't want to eat. This morning, he was no better - vomited 3 times, even more lethargic, pale gums and just looks so miserable. I got a vet appt for him at lunchtime - nothing felt in his abdomen but he is jaundiced with a temp of 105.something. I lost Brook to acute hepatitis so as soon as the vet mentioned the word liver, the tears were flowing before my heart even had time to sink to the floor :embarassed: The thought of having to go through that again just makes me feel sick to my stomach.
He has been given an antibiotic injection to help bring his temp down and hopefully make him feel a bit better. He has to go in at 9.40 tomorrow morning to get bloods taken to check his liver function & pancreas and depending on the results, he will be admitted to be put on a drip. I got someone to sit with him when we got back from the vets so that I could take the other 2 to the park for a quick run - when I got back, he was still lying in the drive in the same place he was when I left :-\

Gentle :bigarmhug: for all of you. When you have a clearer picture of what is ailing Vegas and if it is liver milk thistle is extremely good. There are things to help repair organs in many circumstances. Even Keli had good bloods when he was PTS with the nasal tumour. I made it my business not to have him have the pain of failing organs.

Your post reminded me of my MIL cocker actually about this time last year, his symptoms were pretty much identical to vegas, he was very poorly indeed for a good week and stayed at the vets for much of this time, turned out that was hepatitis but he his extremely fit and well now and has never looked back, so a postive note there

Oh Jay....you must be so worried :'( I am sure the vets will sort him out. Kali had the same thing and the only ill effect is that she cannot have sausages as a treat anymore. Fingers crossed for Vegas that he starts to improve when the meds kick in xxxx :-*

Poor vegas hope he's feeling better soon.
It reminds me of my last cocker girl who sufferred from pancreatitis a couple of times, the symptoms are very similar, the first time she got it she was hunched up and her tummy was hard to touch, she was also vomiting but the vets thought it was a tummy bug, eventully she was diagnosed with pancreatitis and spent 3 days on a drip in the vets, she bounced back from that episode and was fed on a prescription diet for a couple of years, the second time she got it she was very lethargic and just led on the floor refusing to move i knew instantly it was pancreatitis again and took her straight to the vets who took bloods to confirm it was pancreatits and started her on antibiotics immediatly she was very poorly for a few days as she also suffered from epilepsy and so had quite a few fits over this time as well. She did bounce back All I know is the earlier they are diagnosed, antibiotics given and food withdrawn the better.

My first Cocker became ill with the same symptoms, very suddenly, when he was 15 years old. It was a liver infection of some sort and he had a very rough couple of days where he mainly slept, was very lethargic and floppy and couldn't keep anything down. I was almost at the point of letting him go when he suddenly perked up. The infection and it's cause was never fully identified, but old Josh lived another 2 years without any recurrence or any long term problems caused by the infection.
I hope Vegas bounces back just as well as Josh did.

We have had a dreadful night :'(
He started vomiting again about 9pm and he is now quite weak and staggery on his legs. I carried him downstairs about 15 mins ago to put him in the garden where it is cooler, and he just peed pure blood :'(
He's getting seen at 8.30 now but it still seems so far away :'(

The vet has just called with the results and he has AIHA. His PCV is 11 and the vet said that given the fact this has been so accute and that his condition has deteriorated so badly overnight despite the steroid injection the vet also gave him last night, the prognosis is very poor. I explained to the vet that my worst fear is him dying there without me so we have decided to go ahead with the next PCV check and if the level has dropped further, then we are not going to proceed with treatment. He's going to ring back between 1 and 2 and we'll take it from there :'(

Vet has just phoned - his PCV is still 11 but he is fairly comfortable and settled in his kennel. He also said that even though he is still a very ill dog, if he was his he would keep going for now so at least we can say we gave him a chance. So they are going to check his bloods again soon and they will give me a call after evening consults about 8pm.

Just off the phone to the vet now - PCV is still 11. She said they would have hoped for it to have gone up a bit but the fact its remained stable all day is quite hopeful. She also said that she doesn't think there is a big risk of a huge deterioration overnight and if she did think that, then she would have allowed me to bring him home. In her words, he is 'completely knackered' but he is taking an interest into whats going on around him and following the nurses and vets with his eyes, lifting his head a bit etc which he def wasn't doing last night so thats good. So we are going to tentatively carry on and see what his count is first thing. She said if there are any problems through the night then she will call me.
I haven't slept a wink since Sunday morning so am going to take the boys for a quick walk, fall into bed and hope tomorrow brings good news for my boy. Thank you all for thinking of him :luv:

Very grudgingly I would imagine :005:
I got asked to go in a bit earlier and when the vet brought him through, he was just completely out of it. He was so yellow, every breath was an effort and wasn't responsive at all. He just had no fight in him at all. Because he was still attached to his drip, the injection went into his cannula and he just went to sleep :'(

I hope you are ok...the helpless feeling when we have to make this decision is one of the hardest parts of owning and loving an animal, because they cannot communicate with you and you feel so responsible for them.
Be safe in the knowledge you did all you could and Vegas showed you that he couldn't fight any more...you made the right decision.

I am new on here but have just read this thread from top to bottom and all I can say is I am so sorry. We lost our little boy (a chocolate working cocker) at only 14 weeks he had Bacterial Septocemia and he in the end was so jaundiced he just had no fight. Just want to send all my love and from Henry too ( our 22month old blue roan) Goodness it is hard loving them so much :'(

Brook will be looking after Vegas and making sure he is alright, they have each other now so neither is on their own and they have all the other cockers at the Bridge to play with.

I'm so sorry to read all you've been through and am so sad for you and Vegas. Sounds like he was a brave boy right to the end and fought as hard as he could.
