Arrrggghhh
noticed last night that Fern was sitting down gingerly and holding her tail to one side even when walking, no waggy tail in this house from her at the mo
Need to get her to the vets to get it checked out
She was funny when she needed a No 2 last night and I had to grab hold of Rhum and let her go out on her own, knew something wasn't right and then noticed how she holding her tail etc. thought she may have just sprained it but she is hardly moving it at all this morning and she is looking at me with those cocker eyes as tho she is saying she is in a wee bit of pain :'(
Anyone got any ideas?? She didn't do anything that I can think of yesterday and i was here with her all day
-
Poor girl! Is it definitely her tail? Has she ever had problems with her anal glands - could it maybe be an abscess or something there?
Whatever it is, I hope Mr/Mrs Vet sort it sharpish :luv:
-
No ideas i'm afraid, just wanted to give my best wishes and hope she feels better soon x :luv:
-
Thanks
No she isn't one to suffer with her anal glands (well not before anyway)
What is worrying me tho is the fact that nothing happened that i can think of to have hurt her (I know her and rhum play a lot but they didn't yesterday as Rhum was with his dad most of the day and madam was waiting for me at the bottom of the stairs - I was cleaning in peace)
Decided not to wait and phone vet but am gonna be on the door step for when they open - if I have to wait I will wait
-
Hope you get it sorted and Fern is back to her usual self :luv:
-
When Mr Sheryl accidentally shut Chloe's tail in the door (idiot), hers drooped down and not to one side but that might have just been her. Hope Mr Vet makes her all better :luv:
-
In Feb 2009 when we had the really heavy snow, Keli was leaping around like a bunny and I think he hurt his tail in the snow as although the bum wagged, the tail was very limp and hanging to one side. After a few days it must have got better as it was wagging furiously again.
Hope it's nothing to worry about :D
-
How strange - I regularly meet a couple with two retreivers, and Sacha was at the vet two nights ago for a non waggy tail!
They think when her and Happy had been playing they had maybe knocked it, and explained it was quite common. She was wagging again last night, but had to take it easy.
I hope Fern is wagging as normal soon :luv:
-
Hope you've seen the vet now and its nothing serious. On similar grounds, my cat came in for her dinner one night a few months back with her tail draggin on the floor, while she was eating I picked it up and it just fell back down again. I was really worried but the next day it was ok. I know she's a cat, and Fern's a dog, but I think in that area they are fairly similar.... Hopefully its just a pull/sprain or something that happened yesterday and she'll be back to normal again very soon. :bigarmhug:'s for her from me and Maggie

Hope that the vets were able to see you and Fern this morning - and that all has now been explained and that Fern is on the road to recovery. Thinking of you both.
-
Oh mate I hope Fernie is ok, bless her :luv: fingers crossed she has just banged it and nothing else. Slobbery licks from Sox

Hope she's ok Cazza - reckon it's either anal glands or 'Limber tail' / 'cold tail' and her wag will be back soon :luv:

keep us posted :luv:

My first thought was cold tail too, I hope she's ok :luv: Let us know what the vet says.
-
just back in - oooo why is my fabby vets an hours drive away  but that is a different story
Fern was checked over thoroughly from head to toe / tail
Vet said she is a pain as she is too placid :shades: and not showing any signs that vet is hurting her, vet couldn't feel any back or tail breakages or damage :D and so then took her temp 103 :o
She has been given a long lasting antibiotic injection and something else (think pain killer, but my head is mince and I have forgotton ph34r )
Got home and Rhum was real pleased to see her, but she was not soo happy to be sniffed by him and as soon as he went to her rear ooo my what a telling off he got, so now I have two dogs sulking ::) (one cos not well and been to vets and one cos sister doesn't want to play and has told him off)
It's a wait and see how she is in the next couple of days now, but at least she has been to the loo (both) and she is not off her food ( >:D came in and I went to speak to OH and she stole the treat bag off the table, so nowt wrong with her apetite ::) )
-
Oh bless her. Good job you were so on the ball with her.... Hopefully the antibiotics will kick in and get rid of whatever is driving her temp that high.
Gentle squidges for Fern from me and Mags.

Aww poor Fern, I'm glad the vet didn't seem to think it was anything too serious though and I hope her temperature is down and she's feeling better soon... if her table surfing is anything to go by it sounds like she could be on her way :005: :luv:
-
Thanks
and thanks to Helen, after looking at that link on 'cold tail' it sure looks like it and they say the temp can go up too (been doing more research on this)
But what I don't understand is they seem to say it's in bigger working dogs like labs etc, also how come madam here hasn't had extra exercise and she is blinking fit as taken out 3 times a day sometimes more
Hoping that this is what it is and not the possibility of an absess as was mentioned at the vets today
-
I don't think cold tail is unique to those breeds (maybe more common though). Has she been swimming a lot? Very cold water can sometimes be a cause. Or she could have just caught it or bashed it, possibly when in heavy cover or playing with Rhum and she's caught a nerve or something...
-
Nicola - you having a laugh  :005:
I mean Fern and swim in the same sentance, you of all people should know Fern doesn't do water except rain if she has too even puddles she'll walk round rather than walk thro them :005:
Her tail is hanging like those in the pic of the link Helen put up :-\
I'm hoping it's either cold tail or she has bashed it, but we'll have to wait and see - fingers crossed
-
Hope it's not an abscess too and that it's only a bit of tail strain ;) :luv: :luv: get that temperature down Miss Fern, and that's an order! :shades:
-
YAY two tail wags tonight
Little things please little minds, so they say - but this is fantastic as far as I am concerned
-
that's definitely progress :luv: :luv:
-
Sounds like a bit of progress, hope she's feeling brighter in the morning
-
Thats great.... hope the progress continues overnight and tomorrow you're getting a few more out of her :luv:

What Lisa said :luv:
Healing thoughts from me and Chloe

Thanks guys
Well the tail is being held up again and not down in between her legs and it is being wagged a wee bit, so there is a lot more progress over night - still a bit more to go til it is fully back to her self but so pleased with the progress over night.
Now how do i tell her she ain't being walked today  Gonna let her go in the paddock for a run and see how she is after that for a couple of days, will do clicker training to tire her out but need that tail to get some more rest - she isn't gonna be happy being left while I take her brother out
ooo and she hasn't told Rhum off this morning when he went to her this morning either :D
-
Fantastic to hear the progress Fern is making already :D.
Sympathise with the limited exercise regime - never easy with a naturally active dog. Good Luck over the coming few days!
-
Thats excellent!!! Hope it continues through the day and you get your full on waggy girl back very soon!

-
Just seen this. Hope she's all ok soon.
-
That's good news :D I hope she's back to normal and back on her walks again soon :luv:

I have a little boy doing the same thing tonight. He is holding his tail down and not wagging it. He was racing around a pea stubble feild like a mad thing earlier on so it looks like he may have knocked it! We are due to go on our hols on Sunday with him and after the grass seed thing being rsolved ( with a bill of £165!) this is the last thing we needed. Hopefully it is just a strain and he will be fine in the morning or else another trip to the Vet in the morning!! Think I will just book a season ticket!!
-
How is he this morning?
Hope all is ok, if not I would get him to the vets for a check up as if he has strained / trapped a nerve in his back/tail he will need some help to get it sorted
-
Hi Cazza
He is alot happier this morning did his usual 4 mile romp nose to the ground as usual. Think he must have just banged it or caught it or something. He is out cutting the lawn with Tim at the moment he gets lots of exercise doing that as he just follows him up and down the rows for hoursn on end. There are also some very interesting people here fencing our paddock so he keeps goig down there to make sure they are doing it right. So Yes "Henry The Formen" is back on form thank you.

Years ago our dear Penny Black had a "Frozen Tail" Instead of being waggy it hung down as though paralysed. To begin with it was painful and she was given anti inflammatories and pain killers.
She was entered in an open agility show that weekend. We were late getting to the show, Holly had no time to walk the course and still not sure whether to risk it.
They risked it and won the class beating the 144 other competitors by two whole seconds. What a team!
She has never had a frozen tail again thank goodness.
