Title: Heavy breathing, and off food.
Post by: Lily Freya on July 28, 2010, 07:16:34 PM
I am really worried about Freya, my 9 year old cocker.  She has had just about everything, from a pyometra, to dry eye.... but has always been a cheerful little soul.

However, recently she has been really breathing heavily, been more lethargic (asleep most of the time), and for the last couple of days she has eaten very little (which is most unusual).

My first port of call is always the vet.....................but, I am less inclined to rush there, as they seem to prescribe anti-biotics for everything.  Freya is on thyroid medication.  Do any COL's have experience of this with their dogs.  Could it just be that she needs a higher dosage?

I would get her checked up, it could be something and nothing but I'd be inclined to get her checked out especially for heart issues or chest problems just because of her age. It is also possible as you say that her thyroid meds need altering but again its something that needs checking as hyperthyroidism can also lead to irregular heart rhythms.

Thanks so much everyone for your thoughts and suggestions.

We went to the vet, and she examined her thoroughly.  She put her dosage of Leventa up considerably, and I have to take her back in a week.  Remarkably she does appear to have perked up a wee bit.  The vet said that we just have to expect that she is not going to be bounding with energy given her age, and this thyroid problem.

We are caring for another cocker for two weeks (September's Roxy), and Freya has taken a real shine to her.  Perhaps this has aided her recovery a bit too..........a new doggy to liven up the dynamics.  :005:
