Title: Best Type Of crate
Post by: Dubby on September 17, 2010, 11:48:46 AM
Hi

Can anyone advise me on the best type of crate to go for if we decide to start crate training our 9 week old Jasper. Ive seen some which look like cages and some that look like an enclosed cat litter tray.

Any Ideas

Thanks

I cant advise on the best but I have a Savic crate which we like and is quite strong, i was advised to  buy one for Selby when he was a pup and it just didn't last as now it is too small so personally I would get one that will last him into adult hood and put a divider into it so it does not seem too big for him.

I got one of mine from PetPlanet.co.uk - it was a 30" and I bought a divider too.  This was invaluable as you only give the pup enough room to lie down and increase the space as pup grows.  My pup Odie would wee/poo in his crate before someone advised getting a divider, after that Odie had no accidents and cried to go to the toilet (I did have him in my bedroom so this method worked perfect for me).

If you are planning to use a crate for when you leave your pup alone, maybe a 36" may be the better size.  Lesley  :D

I'd definately go for the cage style - better for light and ventilation and as others have said - think bigger and segregate if necessary - that way you won't end up having to buy 4 different crates as they grow up.

If you have Scats near you - I know they have them in Kent - they do brilliant crates - very easy but secure door fasters on them - much better than the PaH Savic version we had - trouble is I can't remember the brandname - BTW they are also CHEAP compared to PaH.

I agree.  For crate training in the house, most people seem to have the cage type  ;)

The cage sort of crates are the strongest (and fold down nicely) - and don't worry about them looking like cages, your pup doesn't know what a cage is!  ;)

I bought a black metal 24" crate on EBay from someone in my home town, so no postage, for just £10. It has two doors (I personally prefer 2 or even 3 doors) and a metal tray floor (the plastic tray floors are more prone to being chewed).

Alfie has loved it from day one. We had it in the kitchen, both doors open, nice cushion inside, treats on the cushion, from the time we brought him home; he found his own way in there, and out again, and in there and out again (I replenished the treats - which were just bits of his kibble) and then, of his own accord, flaked out in there a couple of hours later.

We have a black fleece blanket over the top and two sides in the day, and cover it completely at night.

Thanks guys, im looking on ebay now, there are some that come with bedding and hair rollers to for about 20 pounds but not sure if they are any good. Jaspers off to the vets tonight as his number 2s still not quite right, got some dap spray today aswell to try and help with the troublesome nights. He slept through last night, but only because he wasn't alone. I'm thinking that being in a crate might help with the potty training too. If anyone knows of any good sites online for pet products including crates feel free to post the link to me or email me.

Many Thanks again.

We got our crates from dog health website.  They're not the cheapest but they are really good quality and they also come with a divider which is great when they are tiny!  I think they came with pieces of Vet bed too!

Our cage dividers then came in handy for covering little holes they decided to dig in the garden until they grew out of the habit!  ::)

Hi
Connie has always been crated at night and while im at work for 3 hours during the day and we have the cage type which i cover at night.
She has her bedding in there and a water bowl and always strolls in when we say it's bedtime or in the morning when i get my keys she trots in quite happy.
When she goes to stay at my mum's it folds down and goes with her as without she always appears lost without it and just doesnt settle as well.
We got it from argos and it cost about £45 3 years ago.

Hello,

We have a Freedom puppy pen for Moo-Moo (www.croftonline.co.uk).

He was used to this kind of cage at the breeders so we decided to get one for him.
From day one we have had no howwwwwwwwwling  :005: whilst been in it!
He is 5 now and still goes in it.

It is big enough for a oval bed at one end and his clip on water bowl at the other.

They are a little on the pricey side but well worth it.

Yup, Alfie sees me pick up the Kongs and put something in them, and he's in his crate waiting!

Just take it slowly and don't force him there, try by keeping the doors open and scattering treats or kibble in there during the day or even his kong, don't start by putting him in and shutting the door, he needs to associate it with a good place to be.

I think it's a bit too big for her, but she loves going in it. We have a blanket covering it so it's like her little den  :luv:

Alfie is 5 months old. He also loves going in it! As well as his furry cushion (which is in there all the time), at night he has two fleece blankets, one folded over and flat, and the other rolled up along one side. We don't put the blankets in there till he's had his last wee of the day (which we try to time to be around 11pm), but usually what happens is, starting at around 10pm, he starts bounding into the lounge, asking to come up for a cuddle, but then he sits on one of our laps, bolt upright, staring hard at us in the face. If we don't react at all, he put his paws on our arms. If we say "lay down", he leaps off the sofa, runs into the kitchen (where his crate is), and starts jumping up at his special blankets which are neatly folded on top, because he wants us to put them into his crate so that he can crash for the night! We usually make him wait a bit, and have one last wee, but then he gets really excited as I get the blankets down and put them in and make a "nest" for him. I give him a small handful of kibble in there, shut the door, cover it over with a blanket and he settles down for the night. Even if we're still up, watching TV, talking to one another, even if I am washing up or putting pots and pans away, there's no sound from him, apart from contented sighs. And he's well away then till at least 8am!
