Title: Re-Freezing chicken?
Post by: Becky and Wilson on September 22, 2010, 03:50:41 PM
Hi,

I know dogs have a stronger stomach than ours so I just wondered, can I thaw out some chicken wings and then re-freeze them....will they be safe for my dogs to eat?

It's just I bought 16 Kilos chicken wings and they are portioned into 4 kilo bags....but they're all frozen solid!  I know I have 3 cockers to feed but I think they might go off if I thawed out 4 kilos and kept them in my fridge (if I have room!)

If it's not safe to re-freeze maybe I could take a sledge hammer to the block and see if I can snap any off!  ::)

Thanks

Becky

Oh and just to add to this (been trying to google the above) I found a site that tells you the best way to de-frost chicken.  Which is in the fridge.  When my lot are having chicken for dinner I get it out of the freezer in the morning and leave it to de-frost at room temperature so that it's not cold when the dogs eat it.  Apparantly this is a big no no for defrosting poultry!

Do you defrost in the fridge and do you feed it to the dogs cold from the fridge?  Cold meat seems a little unatural to me for a dog!

No idea about the refreezing - like you I know you can't do it for humans and my gut reaction would be not for dogs either but  :dunno:

Also like you - I defrost at room temperature, but thats not because of the temp of the meat - more that I'll not forget I've got it out for her, which if its in the fridge I'm likely to do  :005:

My NI comes frozen and it does say do not refreeze once defrosted.

My OH got 25 kilos of chicken carcasses and they were all frozen together, I've got six dogs but no way could have used all them. So he whacked them with a hammer to separate them. You should have seen the sweat pouring of him  :005:

I defrost at room temp too, what goes unused goes in the fridge.

I've partly defrosted and refrozen before....
 ;)
As do many people who order from Landywoods and similar companies, as these arrive in large packs and need breaking down into portions!  :D

Thanks for the replies, I'll try the hammer approach first and if that doesn't work, I did read that partially de-frosting and the re-freezing was ok, so I'll do that!

I would avoid refreezing after thawing although it would probably be OK.  I sometimes have a bag of chicken carcasses frozen solid and I find throwing them at the concrete garage floor or giving them a good whack usually does the trick  ;) :005:
