Title: Emma - 8+ year old blind girl at Many Tears

26-10-10 Emma is a very lovely 8+ year old ex-breeding cocker. She is very sad and looking for someone to love and help her. Emma came to us quite matted so unfortunately has had to be shaved in places but when her fur grows back she will be stunning. This poor girl is blind so is desperate for a very special home with lots of TLC, time and patience. Emma has never lived in a home environment before so this will be strange to her but also because she has no sight needs a home with another gentle but confident dog to help her and where someone will be home with her lots.

PLEASE NOTE: We nearly always home ex-breeding dogs where there is ALREADY A RESIDENT DOG living in the house. They have usually never lived in a house before and are only used to canine company.  They usually get their confidence and learn faster with another dog to copy from. This also helps with house training and learning how to walk on a lead. They will make lovely pets but do need a lot of love, time and patience. If the ex breeding dog you are interested in can be an only dog it will say so in its write up.

This dog is at the main rescue centre in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire and is by donation only,

A breeding girl until 8 years old and blind.  I don't know what to say.

I hope she finds the very best forever home that a dog could wish for and hopefully manages to forget her miserable past.

Bless her.

This breaks my heart :'( :'(

Apart from being blind and bred from, just look at her posture in the photos where she's standing, she looks so afraid, and you can see how little muscle tone she has :'(

I hope she finds a wonderful home soon.

Think how many puppies are out there carrying her genes. Two litters a year for seven years - possibly over 100 pups earning the puppy farmers more than £40,000.  PRA? Probably.  Evil incarnate - definitely.  That poor girl - and those poor puppies and owners that are going to be the future victims of this wickedness. At least for Emma there is some chance of happiness after all the misery.  But I wish to God someone would shoot the people who have done this to her and have let all those pups come into the world to perpetuate the unhappiness.   >:D >:D >:D

Well said annieg.
This is heartbreaking, i only wish i had a large house, no money worries & then i would be able to take in & love these poor dogs that no one has really cared about so far.
I hope someone special comes along real soon and can give her the lovely life she deserves.

Emma's  :luv:  We were down at Many Tears when she was brought in.  Poor wee soul had matts all over but the worst was on her ears (to the skin (thick)) and to her rear end.
We were trying to bring her back up the road for gorgeouspoppy to Foster but she was just having her girlie op the day we were leaving Wales.  She reminded me off Pepper (our Cocker from MT) how she just wanted to feel wanted and have your warmth to heat her.

Please can someone have the space in their heart for this gorgeous girl. I know she would make everyone happy!

From MT site:

08-11-10 UPDATE
Emma has been in foster care with us for one week now. She is completely blind in one eye, and we believe has limited vision in the other. She is now able to find her way around our home and garden effectively. Toilet training is under way. Emma needs a calm patient owner with a stable home environment. She needs an adult only home, or a home with grown up children as she is frightened of young children. She gets distressed when away from us, so please only apply if you are at home most of the time, and motivated to support her rehabilitation. She is a lovely dog who deserves nothing but the best. She is making small steps forward every day, and is growing in confidence, and she is learning that humans can be a source of help and care.

Emma is being fostered in Romford, Essex and is by donation only, however please make your donation a reasonable one in line with the costs that have been incurred.  All our dogs micro-chipped, had at least their first inoculation and are spayed/neutered unless there is a medical reason for not doing so.  We will be happy to discuss the cost of any medical procedures that has been carried our. Please read our adoption procedures before applying and complete the Adoption Form. You will be contacted within 24 hours.  If successful you will be home checked and you and all members of your family and any dog(s) who will be living with the dog you want to adopt MUST come to meet the new dog.

We have had the pleasure of fostering Emma for a couple of months now . She has gained a lot of confidence and is now a loving dog who enjoys a cuddle and stroke with people she knows. She walks well on a lead, travels well and is 95% toilet trained with very occasional toileting accidents. Her issues with vision don't seem to bother her at all and she rarely bumps into anything. In new situations she still behaves a bit nervous but quickly regains her confidence when handled appropriately. Emma can be left for periods up to about 3 hours. She would love a home where she can have some nice gentle walks and then snuggle up to her special people on the sofa. She is a truly special girl .

I will try and post some soon,I am useless with computers so have to wait till my husband is around to help me with the photo s , have taken lots though as I am very proud of her progress. Emma just needs a home with someone at home most of the time, with a very stable environment and hopefully another not too bouncy cocker to cuddle up to at night . As she had seperation anxiety at the start when she came into foster she really needs not too be left  more than a couple of hours at a time so an adopter who is home based would suit her best.  This little girl deserves nothing but the best I am sure her special people are out there somewhere definately need to tick all the boxes though. Better the right home than a fast one, she is happy , occ aisionally cheeky and knows she is loved . It is such a joy to see her doing normal doggy things.    Shona

25-02-11 UPDATE

Emma continues to grow in confidence, initiating play with dogs she knows well, and she is becoming more curious about things around her as time goes on. As she becomes more confident she is taking more interest in our cats, so may be better in a cat free home. Her limited vision doesn't hold her back in any way and she is enjoying new adventures every day.

That is good news, I hope they both find their forever home soon!

Since I've been popping into COL I've read numerous threads about rescue cockers with very poor eyesight.  There was a time this would have been a major problem for me if I was looking at adopting!

Just wanted to say to anyone put off by a poor sighted/blind dog, that they really are made of stronger stuff than we give them credit for and are brilliant at adapting to what life throws at them.

Dylan, my 12yr lhasa apso had both his eyes removed in two separate ops just Dec 2010 then in Feb this year,  causing us much concern as we are a busy household with young children!  My hubby even wondered if putting him to sleep would be best for him.  I cried a lot out of worry that he wouldn't cope.

Many of the dogs I've read about are much younger than Dylan, his sudden loss of sight after so many years was awful for him at first as he was sooo scared but we put in some adjustments which I'm sure could be adapted for any blind/visually impaired dog entering a new environment.  We decided our worry wasn't helping him and opted to try and be proactive, utilizing his other senses, this worked for us........

1.  Try different scents for different rooms.  Scented candles are fab - you don't even have to light them, if you can smell them when close to your nose then your dog will likely pick up the scent easily.

2. We have wood floors throughout so Dylan easily lost his bearings initially.  Place rugs in the main rooms and passageways of different textures to help him navigate, and consider marking exit doors with a door mat (ie front and back door).

3.  Go back to basics with training.  We used his lead for a couple of days and walked him round the house which seemed to help his confidence.  Out came the high reward treats as we taught him new commands like FORWARD, CAREFUL, and STOP.  This also helped build his trust in us with his new disability.  I also had a squeaky pair of crocs which were ace cos he was able to follow me  :005:

4.  He does search for his doggie brother - now much easier as Murpy has cat bells on his collar (sounds like Santa's Sleigh lol).  Dylan now knows  Murphy's close by and doesn't NEED to sit ontop of him to know he's there! - He's much more chilled about not having to be touching all the time.

5.  We have a large garden and obviously rugs don't work lol so we put french lavendar around the back door with a wind chime.

The difference these small changes made could be seen within 24hrs with Dylan and his confidence in himself and us snowballed daily.  He loves his walks, finds his way round the house and garden and back again.  There are occasional bumps but he takes it steady and the kids are great now at picking up their kit!!  Many new visitors often don't know he's blind and are surprised when told.

Apparently dogs have an innate ability to "map" their environment in their head without necessarily using their eyes.  Sight isn't (I'm told by vet) as important to dogs as it is to humans.  Dylan, we think, needed a helping hand due to his age and the sudden, immediate loss of total vision.  Even so, his progress is remarkable, like his old self after TWO WEEKS.  I don't think I would have adapted so well, so quickly!!!

Please don't be put off because a dog is blind.  Dylan has opened our eyes (pardon the expression) to their adaptability and I would like to rescue a blind dog in the future some time when the time is right.  In the meantime I'm looking forward to having Dylan around for as long as possible in his twilight years and am proud to say he's as much a part of the family now, as when he was fully sighted.

HOPE THE MODS DON'T MIND ME ADDING THIS HERE.  FEEL FREE TO MOVE IT ELSEWHERE IF NOT APPROPRIATE.

Mel X

Please don't be put off by a dog having sight problems.  Our frst cocker developed cataracts after becoming diabetic, and even after an op to remove them he still remained blind in one eye with limited vision in the other.  He managed just fine.

Thank you Mel x all good advice re the environment and supporting dogs with vision problems. maybe the moderators could make this post a sticky post.  Several of these ideas have been used with benefit to emma
and other dogs with visual impairment that we have cared for.    Although both emma and froodle are still waiting for adoption they are both having a good time in foster and are loved. before froodle came to us she spent some time with a very caring foster family who gave her a fantastic start to her new life. she came into foster with us  already trusting and confident.    both these dogs use their noses well and find their way around well and it doesnt stop them doing what any doggy will do.   x
