I've been trying to do this as well today and can't. <_< Glad you asked. :D

Have you tried joining a website like photobucket? you can load you pics to there and then from there link them to this site..... I have just managed to work out how to do it myself
I think the website is www.photobucket.com if that helps

COL also provides an upload facility for such pics.

But for Avatars the Control Panel is the best option, it will cause problems though is a photo is way too big or in the wrong format.

While we're on the subject of file formats for pics, can I just ask something Stuart. I recently installed Fireworks MX an upgrade to Fireworks, I didn't have any problems before but now it won't let me upload any pics to the Anything Goes section  All the files on my pc are now associated with fireworks rather than Microsoft Picture Editor? I tried changing the extension from .png to .jpeg but it still won't work, any ideas??
-
Instead of changing the extension from .png to .jpeg, try opening the .png file and then Save As .jpeg.
-
Good idea, but does that mean I would have to do that for ALL my pictures, I know I should be able to change the file that is associated with ALL pics to open them, I just can't remember how to do it

Because a file is associated with a certain piece of software it doesn't mean it can't be opened with other programs. Yes Fireworks uses the PNG format but and files which are already in JPG or GIF should be able to be opened by other software.
If you open a file in Fireworks and modify it then Fireworks will save that file as a PNG by default, if you want to convert that file into a JPG for example for use on the Gallery etc you would have to use the Export facility and not Save As (Fireworks will only Save As another PNG, which is a pain.)
Hope this helps?

Go into My Computer, you'll see a toolbar at the top of the page, one of them should say 'Tools', click that then 'Folder Options', choose 'File Types', it may pause for a while while it scans for registered file types, look down the list for the various file types you want to change associations for (jpg, jpeg, gif etc) when you select one of the relevant ones, you'll see it shows you which program it's using to open the various files, next to this is a 'change' button, click this and select the name of the program which you want windows to use to open that file type.
Then click Apply. You may need to re-boot to notice any changes.
Give it a whirl anyway.

Stuart, help!!! I still can't get my photo of Sammy on as an avatar. What am I doing wrong.
I scanned it into Photosuite and reduced it to 44K as a JPG. It says it's the wrong format. I tried uploading it to COL site as per the instructions but don't know what to do with it now it's there. (It's right at the bottom of the list)
Sorry, I'm not very computer literate so simple instructions please.

Are you using the Avatar upload facility located in my controls?
40kb is too big, needs to be below 30kb ish.
Email it me if you want and I'll reduce it and send it back to you.
