Title: tuning certain noises out.....?
Post by: lemoniee on June 15, 2011, 04:56:06 AM
My delta ahs developed a real problem, when we are watching tv, if there is a high pitched noise eg; cop car siren, birds tweeting or esp sea gulls squarking she goes mad; jumps off the setee, runs to the tele aand barks and barks till the noise stops, it has come to the point now that if we hear it before she does we make loud noises over it or fast fwd thru the show!!! Even if she hears birds outside tweeting when she's indoors the same happens and as we live in the cointryside its all the time! Does anyone have any tricks to try to get her to tune out high pitched noises but without damaging her need to listen for a whistle when training her......?

If you hear it before she does I would suggest you try and hold her attention with a treat or destract her with a toy. Hopefully she will be so involved with playing with you she wont notice the noise.

If shes still finding this difficult, try reducing the volume and once she got the idea slowly increase it back up to normal levels. Once shes got the idea that the noise means a great game with you or a treat you'll prob find she hears the noise and runs to the biscit tub or grabs her fav toy instead of all the barking

Good luck  :D

Mark (Top Barks) has some good advice on dogs reacting to noise. I'm pretty sure there was a thread on this a year or two ago but here's a link to one of his videos on YouTube where he's getting his dogs to associate the noise of fireworks with a nice reward in the form of squeezy cheese http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwILjU9zPio&feature=related
