Title: Peri anal gland adenoma diagnosed for Woofie
Post by: White Bryony on August 06, 2011, 05:07:17 PM
After 24 hours trying to get an answer out of the Vets, she finally just rang back with the diagnosis that Woofie has a Peri-anal gland adenoma.  She indicated that it was cancerous but after asking her straight twice I have still come away unsure.  She said it would have been unlikely to have spread and by removing the adenoma with a good margin he would make a full recovery. My usual vet will be ringing me back on Monday to discuss booking Woofalump in for the operation.

I have more questions than answers at the moment as because Woofie is castrated I thought it was very unlikely for him to have this type of lump.

Not looking forward to booking him in for an operaton as he is so fit and well. I hate to put him through the anaesthetic and cause him pain when he is so well  :'(

I am going to write down questions to ask the Vet when I speak to him on Monday.

:bigarmhug:'s Lisa, I can imagine how worried you must be....  Really hope your normal vet can give you the answers you need.
Understand you not wanting to put him through the pain of the op - but on the flipside, he is SO fit and healthy that has to stand him in great stead for a good recovery after the op...
Gentle squidges for your boy  :luv: :luv: :luv:  try not to worry too much over the weekend... easier said than done I know.
xx

Yep I agree, he unfortunately needs to have the op but because he is so generally fit and well he will bounce back to his old self quickly then you can put this behind you and get on with enjoying life ;)

I still can't believe how I came off the phone not being certain.  I asked 'so the cells were cancerous' and 'sorry I must be stupid but are you saying it is definitely cancerous' and both times she managed to waffle so much I ended up confused.

I have looked it up and peri anal gland adenomas aren't cancerous they are called something else. Just wish it was Monday so I could ask Jason, the vet we normally see.

My first Cocker, Josh, had this and prostate problems when he was about 9 or 10. He had the adenoma removed and was castrated at the same time (I know Woofie is already castrated).

Josh was on medication for a mild heart murmur but was otherwise fit. I was worried about the surgery but he sailed through it, recovered really well and went on to live to the amazing age of 16 years and 51 weeks :luv: without any recurrence of the problem.

My understanding then was that perianal gland adenomas are nearly always benign, which Josh's was, and only very rarely cancerous. So I hope you get good news about that when you speak to your usual vet on Monday  :bigarmhug:

Adenomas are benign Lisa.  Barnaby my Many Tears rescue aged approx 9 years, has had 3 operations in the nearly 2 years I've had him, to have around 18  of these growths removed when they've become big enough to be troublesome.    He's got more again now and I will be seeing about removal of some more soon.

He's been fine after all the surgery and recovered really well with no problems.  Your vet will not operate if he is not otherwise healthy enough to withstand the anaesthetic..

They've been referred to as warts but my vet says they are adenomas.

I would not be happy that I had not been given enough clear information by my vet . I think I would be going round to the surgery to ask to see them in person, could you do this?

Take care try not to worry  :bigarmhug:

Hope the  goes well. I am sure it will and he will be back to bouncing around before you know it.

Although the lady wasn't very helpful even though she is a vet, this sort of illustrates why the reception staff shouldn't give results over the phone. They just aren't trained to answer all the questions the owner might have which would lead to even more anxiety.

However I am sure that some experienced receptionists might have left you feeling happier than that vet did!!

Poor Woofie :016:
It's really not nice when the furries are having
problems.
I do hope your vet can answer all your
questions Lisa.
Meanwhile, sending you cyber hugs

Lisa
I know what you are going through, when Chester my CKCS was diagnosed with perianal adenomas I was so worried , but my vet assured me they were benign but had to be removed to stop problems arising later.

Hopefully your usual vet will be able to give you the right information. Thinking of you both for today.

Happy that Woofie's problem is not as bad as it might have been.  Having to wait as long as you did for some definite news was nerve racking enough.

Keeping all things crossed for Woofie for next Wednesday and hope Woofie and you both will feel much better. :luv: :luv: :luv:
