Title: breeding help
Post by: nasha67 on August 13, 2011, 01:56:43 PM
Hi after a bit advice i am trying to breed my 4 yr old boy Toby with my 2 yr old bitch Amber. Amber is in her 10th day of heat and when you dab her there is the tiniest bit of very clear blood. She is standing in front of Toby and offering herself moving her tail out of way ect. Toby is following her but just seems to constantly want to lick her back end he has not tried to mount her yet though she has mounted him. Can anyone advise what i can do to help them get it on all help greatly appreciated thanks Steve

Sometimes male dogs will not mate bitches they live with or if he's inexperienced, he's perhaps a little old for his first time and may need assistance to teach him what to do. Or as Louise says, your bitch is not ready - there is no set time when bitches ovulate, can be as early as 5 days or 16 days or more. 10 days would be too early for many bitches.

PS Amber can't be 2 for a few months if your previous posts about her age are right :-\

Unfortunately it's not always as easy as it sounds, some dogs just won't mate full stop, take a look at this thread: http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/discuss/index.php?topic=82355.0

Amber seems all up for it standing in front of him tail to one side but when he tries to mount her she snarls at him and wriggles away does this mean she is not ready?

Just wondering if this is your first time breeding ? I only ask as if you had a girlie that had used an experienced stud dog before or been at a few matings you would have a better idea what to expect and how to oversee both dogs as it were .

Unfortunately in my experience it's not all just about mother nature . you need a lot of experience or at the least a mentor to help you and your dogs do things safely and sometimes they just will never 'get it on'

Glad it has worked out well in the end.  Looks like she perhaps just wasn't ready before.
