Hi all.. I've been a member for some time, and I frequently read but don't frequently post :D
I'm posting tonight because we're not sure what is going on with our 8 year old cocker Jennie. It's quite a long story so I will try to be as brief as possible whilst trying to remember everything!
It starts 2 Sundays ago. Jennie had been fine all day - we'd had a good long walk, she hadn't done anything unusual, eaten anything or acted strangely.
I fed both dogs at 6pm, the usual food, the usual amount. Jennie has a habit of gulping down her dinner very quickly and did so. Afterwards she did this very odd belch / vomit noise, which worried me but she was licking her lips and wagging her tail so I wasn't overly concerned, and she didn't actually produce any vomit.
At 8pm I went to put Jennie's eye ointment in and I noticed she had a bloated stomach, she was uncomfortable to touch and actually cried out. Fearing bloat we took her to the emergency vets. By the time we were there her bloating had gone down though she was still in painful and not enjoying her belly being touched. The vet wasn't concerned, gave her pain meds and sent us away saying call back if any changes, and come see your usual vet tomorrow.
Monday she was still in pain - she was obviously uncomfortable and paced around quite a lot. So I took her to the vet - she was given a shot of NSAID (rimadyl) and I was told again, keep an eye, she's probably just twisted a muscle or pulled herself somehow. They took bloods to rule out infections / other issues that could appear on bloods (pancreatitis etc). Call back for bloods in the morning.
Tuesday and she's no better - crying out when you touch her, pacing constantly if you let her - called for the bloods, and they weren't back. Vet gave us tablets of rimadyl to settle her. When she sat she would just cry out in a little rasping whine as she breathed.
Wednesday she went in for x-rays. X-tays showed up slightly calcified discs (strangely like our older cocker) . Vet was convinced this was the cause - more rimadyl & muscle relaxers to try and stop her tensing up which they said was the cause of her bloat. The blood test showed nothing unusual, slightly elevated lipase levels, but nothing that concerned the vet, particularly as nothing else was elevated.
Thursday - Friday - absolutely no better, episodic pain spikes, shaking, licking her lips and swallowing lots as if she's nauseous, lots of pacing and lots of drinking. Crying out if you touched her abdomen. The vet prescribed tramadol to try and prevent the 'pain breakthroughs'.
Saturday - no different
Sunday morning - the worst episode of pain yet. She went to move and started screaming in pain, then she tried to get away from the 'pain' and that hurt more, and then she began shaking and just sat whining for about 5 minutes. Obviously very distressing for us.
We rang the vet again and ended up taking her down to see a different vet at the same practice. This 'new' vet was not convinced it was her back, she was convinced it was abdominal and kept her in. She was then in from Sunday - Tuesday, during which time they have done ultrasounds, more X-rays, more blood tests, an endoscopy and finally opened her up and examined everything ...
They've found nothing. They have no idea what is wrong, though we are awaiting the blood test results still (including a 'special' set of tests around pancreas function). They kept her in and gave her IV fluids and a strong painkiller via her IV.
She came home and is on tramadol, rimadyl and norclav anti-b's. As they found nothing they are hoping that the massive dose of painkillers she had whilst in the surgery, and the anti-b's and continuing pain meds might 'clear up' anything she's had that might be lurking ph34r
When we picked her up she was incredibly stressed and wet herself, she came home and cowered when we tried to touch her, so we let her just settle in, spoke to her in 'happy voices' and tried to make it easy for her to settle.
At home on Wednesday she wasn't too bad, and seemed more relaxed (but not normal) even wagged her tail a little. She was a little tense and uneasy, but more like her usual self so we were happier at least.
Today she is regressing again. We've have episodes of breakthrough pain where she yelps when she tries to move, not all the time, just occasionally, can be from a sitting position or a lying. She is yelping again if you touch her, paces around and around if you let her. She will sit in her bed if you tell her too and when she does she's sitting but kinda slouched over, wide sad eyes looking at you full of pain, breathing a little rapid and panting. She doesn't want to be touched and cowers if you try to, no matter where.
Throughout this whole awful ordeal she has continued to eat when offered food, though not with her usual enthusiasm. She's not had diarrhoea per se, it's been squishy but about the right amount and the right colour, until today when her poop was brownish and hard for about an inch (sorry very descriptive! like she was dehydrated) and then became loose, sticky and the colour of mustard. She's also not had a temperature (to speak of) with her fluctuating between 38.2 and 38.8c
Currently waiting for a call back from the vet to give an update on her condition and discuss what's next. Previously we'd been discussing a referral to a specialist - possibly for an MRI or cat scan of a spinal fluid tap. The vet says theres a slight chance it could be a form of meningitis, particularly if she goes downhill again... which she is... though that's not a diagnosis yet, so I'm not saying thats what it is.
So... has anyone else ever experienced anything like this? Do you have any advice, any words of wisdom.. anything... ?? :'( :'(
-
I don't really have any words of wisdom for you. I just want to say how awful for you all. It's painful enough having a sick dog but not having a diagnosis yet is even worse. Poor Jennie, I really hope a diganosis is made soon and treatment can commence. Sending you and Jennie a big :bigarmhug: and I hope things improve very soon :luv:
-
Are they sure it isn't a spinal problem? Sounds partially like Lylas symptoms. That starts with just a depressed dog, then an in pain one, then a wobbling one. Even if it isn't that, an MRI or myelograms can rule it out, including meningitis. If it is a spinal problem then speed is of the essence. I hope you get answers because it is awful to see them in such distress :'(
-
I am sorry I don't have any advice but just wanted to say how sorry I am for Jennie and hope the vet can soon find out what is wrong and help her.
Thinking of you both and hope that Jennie is well again very soon.
-
No words of wisdom from me but heartfelt sympathy and lots of positive thoughts
:bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:
-
I'm sorry I can't really help with any knowledge or similar experience, but just wanted to say how sorry i am that you are all having to go through this, how distressing to see Jennie in pain and not know how to relieve it. I hope the vets find out asap what the problem is.
Sending you :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:
-
I'm so sorry to hear about what is happening to Jennie. I really hope they figure out what it is soon for her :luv:
-
No advice I'm afraid but lots of :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: to you and Jennie, I really hope that they find out whats wrong asap :luv:
-
Sorry I can't help with any advice, lots of :bigarmhug: for you & Jennie, I hope you get answers for her soon.
-
I can't offer any advice either, so sorry. I so hope she gets better soon. try to keep your chin up. We will all be rooting for you
-
Like everyone else I'm afraid I have no advice but I just wanted to send some healing thoughts to poor little Jennie :luv: :luv:
It's so awful when our little darlings are distressed and we don't know how to help and I really feel for you.
Hope things get sorted out soon :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:
-
thanks for all your kind words - it's a very unusual case, but there is such a wealth of knowledge (and love! :luv: ) on these boards I thought I'd ask.
@ Sheryl - they aren't sure it isn't spinal (i.e. the discs causing the pain) however she doesn't act like a dog with back pain - she walks fine when encouraged (or during her pacing) the pain doesn't happen at a particular movement or after standing/sitting/lying down, she isn't hunched up and to top it off tramadol doesn't seem to be helping, which we've been told is the best painkiller for 'bone' related pain - whatever that means
-
So sorry to hear about Jennie :luv: Hope you get answers soon.
Sending lots of healing thoughts and :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: for you both.
-
This sounds so traumatic for you all...just wanted to send you my best wishes and positive thoughts . Linda
-
Hope you are feeling better soon Jennie and the vets get to the bottom of it.
Sarah :bigarmhug:

No advice but hoping you find the cause soon
Thinking of you both xx

Poor both of you. also sending lots of :luv: and :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: Such a mystery but it does sound similar to pancreatitis which my previous cocker suffered from several times. His could often be brought on by stress so just keeping her calm and showing her you love her will definately be helping her if that is the diagnosis. Hopefully the "special" bloods may flag something. My doggie was starved for 24 hrs when he had his first (and worst) case of pancreatitis and after that I could read the signs and catch it early by putting him straight onto boiled chicken and rice to calm his tum. Has the vet suggested starving her or only offering bland food just in case? Really wish I could wave a magic wand and find the answer and make everything better for you and Jennie. I am sure the answer will be found soon.
-
What a worry for you, hope you get some answers soon :'( :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:

I was going to say the same thing as my beloved Pebbles had this on more than one occassion :luv: :luv: try giving her low fat food or plain chicken anything without fat in it (just in case) as fat irritates pancreatitis.
Sending you lots of love and positive thoughts for your Jennie :luv: :luv: x x x hope your vet finds out whats wrong real soon take care x x x
-
Sending hugs and prayers to you and Jennie - I can only imagine your distress - I know how much it would upset me to see my dogs like that. I truly hope that this is solved quickly and easily.
-
I dont what to say - I can't think of anything worse than seeing a beloved friend in so much pain and not being able to find out what is wrong to make the pain go away. Lots of healing thoughts and all paws crossed here for you all, God Bless
-
thanks again everyone :)
So after a long phone call with the vet we're off tomorrow to a specialist for the day, they have booked us in after consulting with our vet as an emergency.
All the blood tests and 'special' pancreas tests are normal really - well, again slightly elevated but (should read 0-200 for normal and read 288). She was starved monday - tuesday, and has been on chicken and rice ever since then anyway given they had her insides out to check them over :'( :'(
Really don't want to take her because she was ridiculously stressed after being at our usual vets for 48 hours - and she is actually scared of being hurt now, which isn't helping.. but we have to know what is wrong .. poor baby :'( :'(
-
Was just about to suggest seeing a specialist. Hope you get answers soon and that she gets better soon.
Not sure where you're going but the specialist vet practices/vet schools are often very good and will put both you and your dog at ease.
I was worried re same with one of my cats but he took it in his stride (and even having to get there and back on the train he was fine).
-
We really hope you get
some answers today.
Poor wee Jennie :luv:she does
sound very distressed, as you must
be too.
We hold you and yours in our
thoughts and prayers.

Just wanted to say good luck for today, hope they find the cause of the problem, thinking of your both.
-
I was thinking the same as sheryl.
I have a dog with spinal problems and the first thing I noticed was his tummy was very hard and swollen I thought he had eaten a chicken bone at my daughters birthday party and convinced my self that was the problem.
I hope it goes well with the specialist and she gets well quickly :-*
-
Thinking of you and Jennie :bigarmhug: I know just how awful it is when our babies are not well.
-
Hi, so sorry to hear your news.I hope that the specialist can give a diagnosis. Its bad enough to see your dog ill but even worse when you don't know the cause,it seems a little easier when you know what you are dealing with.
Loads of good thoughts from us. :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:
-
Do hope that you get some answers today, and hope that they can help her.It must be awful for you to see you dog in so much distress.
-
Thanks all. Jennie is at the specialists now in solihull. She was totally not herself, and even tried to bite the neurologist!! :embarassed: :'( :o :-\
She's checked in for yet another ultrasound, a full spine MRI and possibly a spinal fluid tap. The specialist is unsure if it is back - her symptoms are very episodic, she isn't in constant high levels of pain (well it certainly spikes higher).. she walks totally normally and doesn't display the back arching as Sheryl and Jennyspin have described their girls doing.
It is possible that she's got pain higher up the spine (shoulders to head), meningitis is a possibility but she doesn't necessarily have all the symptoms for that either.
THe specialist was supposed to call about 11am and hasn't - I'm never sure if that is good or bad... :-\ :-\
-
My heart goes out to you and Jennie - this waiting to be contacted with any information is a horrible thing and poor little Jennie is clearly not a well bunny :'(
I hope that a diagnosis can be made and treatment given to sort this all out and in the meantime I send you and Jennie lots of support and gentle hugs :bigarmhug: :luv: :bigarmhug:
-
:bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: for you KellyT...I really hope they get back to you soon and that they can sort little Jennie out :-*...all paws and fingers crossed for you here :-*
-
Looking a the clock and thinking of you and Jennie :luv: :luv: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:to you both
-
Sweetheart, please don't worry
about her biting the healthcare
staff at the moment; I know that
sounds like aterrible thing to say but
put it in context ; she is in pain
and frightened and they will have
been through it all with other dogs.
I hope they contact you soon(which
they should of done when they said
even if it was to say they hadn't finished)
steffxxx
-
MRI is conclusive - it is a slipped disc, probably between stages 2 and 3. She is currently undergoing surgery to fix it. The baffling thing is the fact that she was still walking completely normally.
:'( :'( :-\ :-\
-
We are so sorry to hear about your Jennie. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jennie and you as a family.
Sending lots of positive and healing thoughts your way.
:bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: for you and Jennie and hoping the specialist can identify the problem.
Love,
Gwyneth Colin and Megan xxx
Ps. Just read your update and hoping all is going well for Jennie. xx

That is a good thing and all the better for her recovery. Was it the lumbar 2/3?
-
I can't believe how many back injuries there have been on this forum in such a short space of time :o
I'm glad you finally know what is wrong with her and I hope her surgery and recovery go well :-*
-
I'm glad that you've got a diagnosis after so much worry. Sending lots of positive thoughts for Jennie's surgery and a straightforward recovery :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:

I was thinking the same. When I took Dennis in , in 2010 I was told it was common In cockers but had never come across it when doing research into health problems. Then to have 3 others on this forum within a month , I was shocked.
:bigarmhug: to you I know how much you will be worrying about her.
-
Lots of healing thoughts from me and Molly xx
-
That is a good thing and all the better for her recovery. Was it the lumbar 2/3?
I'm not entirely sure - she has a couple of calcified discs in what would be her lower back if she was human... but the slipped disc is a little further up from what the specialist was describing, not as far as her shoulders, but around the middle, middle to lower.
thank you all for your :luv: & :-* ... it's really appreciated and it's heartening to read through people's similar experiences.
Will update later on how the surgery went
-
Lots more caring thoughts from all of us ....I'm so so sorry to hear Jennie's diagnosis but at least now you know what you're dealing with &the vets can treat her accordingly :'(.
Poor baby & as others have said, far too many severe back injuries going on at the mo & feel for all the poor doglets & their owners ....what a traumatic time for you all :'(
Prayers for Jennie's speedy recovery & as many get well wishes as we can muster :luv: :-* :luv:

That sounds the same place as Lylas right enough and where the doggie physio says their pivot point is. Hoping everything goes smoothly with the op and you get some peace later when your mind is more at rest x

So pleased that you now have a diagnosis, and hope that the surgery goes well. I note that you have gone to Solihull, if it is Willows they were fantastic with our Spinone and also gave great post op care sometimes even over the phone when I was really worried. Best wishes from us .
-
Hello all .. thank you so much for all your kind messages - I showed my husband and we both nearly welled up with the support you have all shown
The surgeon has rung and the op has gone as well as it could. They are pleased.
They have remove some debris and everything looks good. It's all fingers crossed for tomorrow to see what affect it has on her. :-\
@lottiescat - yes that is where she's gone (didn't want to say in case I breach any rules!)
-
Just caught up with your thread. So sorry for all the stress you've been through. It's really quite scary how often this is happening with our gorgeous cockers.
Hope jennie has a quick recovery and you all get back to normal.
-
So glad you finally got a diagnosis and that Jennie's op went well. Wishing her a speedy recovery :bigarmhug: :-*
-
So very glad you finally have a diagnosis and that Jennies op went ok :luv:
Like others I can't quite believe the number of poorly cockers we have on here at the moment, thank you for taking the time to keep us updated, with everything else going on it must be hard to do, but the problem with COL is that everyones furbabies become so precious when you read about them and see pictures of them growing up over the years. Whilst its lovely to share with the joy they bring, it also means we share the worry as well when one of them becomes unwell.
Hope you have Jennie home with you very soon :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:

So glad that the op went well, and wishing her a speedy recovery

Don't know how I have missed this, but oh what a worry for you and your little one, I can't imagine how you coped, it must have been awful and for such along time, poor little mite, well there is a light now at the end of the tunnel now which is great, my thoughts and prayers are with you, big hugs for you and gentle sqishes for the little one :luv: :luv: hope she continues to improve.
-
Sorry I have not posted before. I am so glad you have an answer.
My Niki had a slipped disc many years ago but the vets just gave painkillers and suggested rest. Keli pulled a muscle in his back and I actually thought he was dying. He yelped and cried and walked funny and allsorts. Thankfully Rimadyl sorted that out.
Huge :bigarmhug: to you both x

Sending Jennie :bigarmhug: Wishing her a good recovery. All the best.

So pleased you have a diagnosis and that the op went well, you can now look forward to getting her home and we hope she has a speedy recovery.

Great news!! :D :D :D
Jennie has been walking around this morning fine, she has eaten and is bright in herself.
She's happy to be examined now (previously she wasn't), doesn't want be be lifted though, but thats hardly surprising given she's had back and abdominal surgery this week!!
They are pleased with her so far and will be reducing her IV drugs over the next 24hours so that they can ensure we can manage her pain at home. All things going well she should be home on Monday :D :D :D :D
On a down side our other cocker has diahorrea today :-\ so she is on a 24hour fast, and I'm hoping whatever it is isn't a) contagious and b) requiring more veterinary expense!! she's fine in herself really, still bouncing around and happy, so I'm hoping it's just either a bit of stress from everything that's gone on or an upset tim in relation to a Misfits chew she had yesterday :lol2: fingers crossed
-
That is really good news
Sending Jennie lots of healing thoughts and hope she is back home on Monday where she can be spoilt :luv: :luv:
Fingers crossed for your other little girl and her upset tum as well :-*

Wonderful news. Come on Jennie, we're all routing for you.
Walking about and eating after the week she has had, she really is a trooper. :luv: :luv: :luv:

-
thanks all for your love and support! :luv:
spoken to the consultant today, Jennie is eating well, walking, doing 'doggy shakes', doing 1's and 2's ( never thought I'd be so pleased to hear about her pooping! :D ) and was even having a sniff about in their exercise area.
She's still not happy about being lifted, or manipulated but has not problem with her wounds be touched / looked at. The consultant vet thinks that is likely to be apprehension and fear of the fact it did hurt rather than actual pain.
Have to call at 9am tomorrow to get a final update and arrange a collection time (fingers crossed! :021: )
-
Aw I am so so pleased and I can feel the relief you are feeling reading your post :luv: hope she is home with you soon. Big sqwuggle from me and selby x
-
Lovely news - hope all goes well tomorrow.
-
So pleased - sounds like she's coming on brilliantly. Can't wait to hear when she's home :luv:

Great news. I think sometimes we (and vets) forget just how major these ops actually are and if they were human, they would probably still be on morphine. Pain was a huge factor for Lyla. We are coming up to four weeks now and the clinic don't want her Rimadyl stopped yet. At one point in the early days, she had Rimadyl in the day and Tramadol at night! :o. I am so pleased she is doing so well. Onward and upward now!
-
Thanks Sheryl :) x
Neither Rimadyl nor Tramadol helped Jennie prior to her op - I'm hoping that the painkillers they give us to come away with isn't either of these things because seeing how 'useless' it was for 2 weeks doesn't fill me with confidence that it will help her going forward.
I was reading up on supplements and that cetyl-m stuff is supposed to be great and some reviewers say they use it instead of rimadyl - not sure I would substitute them but giving Lyla some might help? I think I'm definitely going to get some for Jen.
Here's the site if you haven't come across it yet
http://www.cetylm.co.uk/ (http://www.cetylm.co.uk/)
-
To be fair, neither of those would have helped Lyla before the op either but they have been grand for her after care. I was hoping her Rimadyl could be stopped soon so will take advice from John later in the week. I was looking at the mobile bones supplement too but cannot find anything to say it helps discs. I know Bluegirl has been doing some research and I think I may go down the route of foods rich in what is needed to promote healthy discs rather than a supplement. Then again I am not sure.....it is difficult to know what to do for the best isn't it?
-
Thanks Sheryl :) x

When my friends dog had the same problem but in his neck area none of the painkillers could touch the pain and he was on morphine whilst he was in the vets, I would imagine for your girl now as she is post operative that Rimadyl or tramadol would now be sufficient especially considering she is not as reactive to pain on just touch. Guess the real test will be when she comes home.
-
So pleased she may be home tomorrow, looking forward to hearing she is back home.

HOpe you get the go-ahead
to bring Jennie :luv:home

up
after the weekend )

I am currently say in the back of the car with a very squeaky and wriggly Jennie sitting next to me in her crate :)
She was so happy to see us - unlike when we picked her up from our usual vet after her 2 nights there and laparoscopy - she was so distressed then.
A completely different dog! Brought tears to my eyes!
So happy and pleased - long recovery ahead but fingers crossed - will post more info when I'm home about her exercise regime etc for those interested :) :)

Been following Jennie's story, just wanted to send her lots of healing hugs and best wishes for a steady recovery :bigarmhug:

Great news :luv: sounding positive already. Looking forward to the updates, take care of yourself too :bigarmhug:

ok home - dinner eaten (chicken & rice of course! :shades: ) - first set of tablets taken - one curled up jennie in her basket beside me.
So the vet showed us the MRI scans - OMG :o :o - the neuro-vet again said she couldn't believe she had still been walking, because looking at the pictures she should have been paralysed, possibly even a stage 5 with no sensation.
She said the disc had probably slipped very gradually so the spinal chord had time to compensate - hence the walking still but that eventually it had begun to cause the pain.
She is a very bald little dog - shaved belly for the laparoscopy, and a shaven patch on her back and her little plaster :)
She's on 25mg Rimadyl / day , 500mg Synulox / day & 600mg Gabapentin per day.
Strict rest for the next 4 weeks, and crated when not supervised. No stairs, running or jumping - ideally no steps (theres a small kerb height step into our back garden :-\ so we've been told, gently and slowly should be fine - however we've decided to go out the front door instead). No slippery floors.
5-10 minutes 'sniff' time whilst also going to the loo 3 or 4 times a day. However we have been told that if she starts getting restless and excitable when out and she should be resting that we can gently walk her for 10 minutes - on lead, no pulling etc (tough one! ph34r )
As far as T-Touch goes .. the neuro-vet wasn't aware of it.. but she said that anything to help calm her down and relax her is a good idea, but if anything starts stressing her out or makes her thrash /wriggle around to much then it must be stopped.
When we were there I was actually doing a T-Touch move on her which was actually working and calming her down! (it was the ear one - I can't remember it's name, but it was definitely calming her down!)
So pleased.. I hope she keeps it up and we manage the post-op care properly - and by I manage I mean we know exactly what to do it's just ensuring Jennie co-operates! :005: :luv:

Love and hugs to you too xx

thank you all :)
just an update on the boards 5th spinal problem spaniel!
I think spinal surgery blues must be contagious today because Jennie hasn't been her perky self either. She has made a run for it outside, made it up 2 stars and tried to jump up! :013: >:D which is all a no no :(
She's been sat looking quite sorry for herself again, and giving me that 'cocker look' of an unhappy cocker :'(
I hope she hasn't hurt herself
She's fast asleep right now, after having her pain meds, so fingers crosses tomorrow she is happier again :)
-
Aww poor Jennie, hope you all manage to get some sleep :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: BIG hugs from Lottie and Lola xx

Kelly I hope Jennie is feeling better soon. You just wish so much you could sit these kids down and explain why they must rest and give their bodies time to heal. I hope she is feeling better today.

How is she this morning pet? Much better I hope :-*
-
I hope she's feeling better too. :luv:

Hi Ladies...
she is much brighter this morning thank you :021:
You just wish so much you could sit these kids down and explain why they must rest and give their bodies time to heal.
She does this thing when she's over excited where she sits and stamps her front feet in excitement whilst wriggling her bum! She was doing it this morning after being let out of her crate. It's entertaining to watch and I'm glad she's feeling better but I just want her to rest! :lol2:
:) x
