Title: Cocker Transport - What do you use in your car
Post by: baz on January 27, 2012, 11:40:26 AM

Hi all,

The things we do for our pets.

With having two Cockers now we have changed from the car to a jeep to give the nuisances more room  :luv:

We used to have a dog guard in the old car which was fine, however were now looking for a large type transit box.
I'm just wondering what people use for there dogs when travelling.

Thanks..... Baz

My husband fought against it, but I wouldn't change for the world now and nor would he - we have a Barjo Dog guard and guard inside the car.  It maximises the space in the car but then that is space for 4 dogs!

The cages however have the advantage of space at the side for odds and ends and easy to take out/flatten when you want to do the tip run!

I have two of these in the Landcruiser http://www.petsathome.com/shop/atlas-wire-door-dog-carrier-by-ferplast-13643. There is plenty of room for them to stand and turn and they are separated which is what I need.

Same as Poppypuppy09 & as recommended by Poppypuppy09  :shades: :005:
Over the years we have tried different dog guards, crate's etc but the Lintran has def. come out tops

We have a crate for Ruby. We also have a dog guard which we used for our last dog (Lab) but feel safer putting her in a crate as I think she'd "rattle around" in the back of a Kia Sorento  :005:

When we had the Isuzu trooper we just had a dog guard to stop them jumping over to the front. When we changed to a mercedes jeep the dog guard was still fine BUT we found because the boot opened up and over rather that the previous 2 door way, the dogs just bolted as soon as they saw enough room. So we opted for a custom made Lintran box which is able to house 4 cockers all in the same space or has a dividing panel so you have 2 and 2. Each of the separate areas has a lockable door. We have found this to be ideal but as I say the main reason we changed was because of the style of the opening boot door.

Atlas 100. It fills the boot of our Subaru forester. Sometimes wonder if we'd be as well just using a dog guard but crates do stop them leaping out. Esp. With 2. OH wants a bigger car "for the dogs". Hmmm.

Atlas 80 crate for Henry, although when he's relatively clean and dry he rides shotgun with a harness, which he prefers as he likes to have a view ;)

I have recently swapped my Suzuki Swift for a Honda Jazz - reason?  The back seat of the Swift was too small for my labrador to get comfortable.

I know have the back seats of the Jazz folded down and a guard behind the front seats and a tailgate guard (both had to be custom made) and its just perfect, especially when we are at agility competions.  Both dogs love it, Taz tends to lay down and chill out, whilst Kira prefers to look out of the window.

We also have a Lintran dog crate.   Had for about three years had a wire crate before but hated it rattling about. Love the Lintran so easy to keep clean.

It alternates between a crate, loose and one of these

http://www.roofbox.co.uk/dog-bag/dogs-pets-carriers-dog-bag.php (http://www.roofbox.co.uk/dog-bag/dogs-pets-carriers-dog-bag.php)

the dog bag is grab cos it folds into a rucksack, has a velcro bottom, it light, and has tie down straps which you can use to 'peg it out' on grass - so it's great for creating a shelter for them if you're out for the dog, or camping etc.  you can also put it on the back seat or in the boot.  It's super :)

Murphy has a crate in the bout of our vectra for travelling fairly short distances. When driving to my parents which is couple hours of way he is on the back sear with a harness attached to seat belt. When husband picks me up each night from the station in the van murphy sits waiting for me on the front seat with his harness attached which he loves as he is high up and can look around but is still secure.

For those that use the Lintran cages, can you get them with separate compartments?  Are they custom made for whatever car you have?

We have a dog guard in the back of both our Ford Focus estate and Citroen AX.

The dogs are a little bit cheek-by-jowl in the AX but they have got room to lie down (we've actually had three in there when our house guest stays with us, although as long suffering Spike gets humped by the other two sometimes, it makes him a trifle reluctant to get in! ;))

Kelly they look great, what is it like on the rear seats ?
Brodie has a booster seat at the moment, but the kind where the seat belt actually goes through the seat to anchor it in place

I've never tried it, but the 'dog bag' has straps on which you loop the seat belt through, and then you can use these "footwell fillers"  (bottom link on this page http://www.roofbox.co.uk/scripts/rbvehsel4.php?query=ERDBM-MPP1&emulate=accgen (http://www.roofbox.co.uk/scripts/rbvehsel4.php?query=ERDBM-MPP1&emulate=accgen) )
to build up your footwell to keep the dog bag in place - depending on the size of your back seats, and the size of dog bag you have -
'Dog bag' say that the medium, small and extra small ones can be used easily on the back seats, and it's really up to you if you want to use the footwell fillers, depends how much over hang you have.
We've only ever had it in the boot of an estate or a land rover though so we've never had to do it, plus cos ours has 2 dogs in I'm happier with it in the boot :)

Edited to add that RoofBox co have some dogs bags in their Bargain bin ->

that looks better on the back seat - although not as versatile as the dog bag original model :)

I think they would probably custom make them for any car if they were asked but they are expensive. I was lucky enough to get mine second hand from ebay for £120 which is a huge saving. Mine came with a divider and 2 doors so it was ideal.

I feel a photo opportunity coming on. :005: Off to take said pic.

I have some sort of mercedes jeep, and this was custom made for it. It utilises all the available space and is mesh at top so you are able to still see clear when reversing etc. Its ideal.

woah! that's huge! lol  :D  Are those the ones like the police use in their dog vans?

Can you take it out easily or is it pretty much a permanent feature in the back?

I'm not sure if the police  use them but they are fairly lightweight. Put it this way I am able to put it in and take it out of the boot by myself.

If anyone does decide to go for the Dogbag - I would check these out from Petplanet, pop-up fabric crates that are a fraction of the price.  I use them when go camping (they even come with tent pegs to fasten them to the ground) and fold up into a flat bag.

Something to think about

As a result of a road traffic accident I had on the 3rd of January I feel the need to post on this topic regarding safety issues when transporting your dogs.

The accident was no fault of mine, a van decided to cut across 3 lanes of traffic on a dual carriageway to cut through to a petrol station on the other side (where there was a no right turn sign)  and ploughed  into the side of my vehicle. I was transporting a rescue dog at the time, and fortunately she was in a crate in my Focus estate car.

My friend and I had to be cut out of the car by the fire brigade who removed the roof !  Fortunately we only suffered concussion, bruising and broken ribs.

The dog was unhurt although she must have been shocked. I dread to think what would have happened had she been anywhere other than in the crate ?  The crate was warped and no longer clips together properly but it protected her from being thrown around the car and causing more damage to both herself and to us,  My car is a write off !

In the past I have transported my dogs in seat harnesses and soft crates, and behind a dog guard but after this experience I know I will never use anything but a proper crate

What a frightening experience for you, your friend & the rescue dog Jann  :'(
Thank goodness none of you were hurt badly  :shades:  :013:
I also think even more so after reading your post it is so important to have the dogs securely crated in vehicles.  ;)

I too need a new crate for the car as Max has outgrown the little 22" one we were lent. He has a 36" metal one at home which I don't want to move so need one that will do for the car and to sleep in on holiday. couldn't decide between soft or hard but having read about your terrifying experience I have decided to order a 30" metal one. It is only £22 from ebay and as it will take up most of my boot space I am hoping I will at least be able to pack light things on top of it!!

I have recently bought this:
http://www.petplanet.co.uk/product_group.asp?dept_id=773&pg_id=644

I spent ages researching and deliberating on what to do as the older I get the more decision making becomes a problem  >:(
I like the Lindram one (but will probably not keep the car, so felt it was too expensive), and finally got the above because my friend had just bought one and we already had one similar that was rusting.  It's certainly not up to Lindram safety, but it does the job at a good price.

We just use a soft crate at the moment but were thinking about a rear seat seat belt harness for Lucy, would that not be safer than a secured hard metal crate in which she would be thrown around in if we had an accident? We dont know what is best really? :-\

What an awful accident. I do worry about this sort of thing.

What would happen if the car was dented and the dog was trapped in the crate though? Was wondering about an escape hatch... OH says I worry too much because we have a Discovery and they're pretty tough. But I'd hate for my dogs to be stuck in a cage (or indeed, loose on the road!).

Tally has a normal 1 door crate in the boot but also a car harness for when we need the boot space (for baby's stuff!)

when lookingfor crates/caging always checkout agilitynet fleamarket as people sell them on there if changing cars/vans and you can grab a good deal. i now drive a big sprinter van and bought my caging off ebay that a guy was selling as changed vans and it would not fit new van, i got it at £60 ;) and it can hold up to 10dogs if you share but i have 1 in each of the four (plus sprocket has a crate) its 2up 2down. they have loads of room to stand and walk around which is good when flyballing as they spend alot of time in them. also great when we go away.
