Title: Positive thoughts please
Post by: Maria n Dennis on January 28, 2012, 06:33:14 PM
Dennis isn't right at all , he's been fine all day been in his crate but been out for a weem4 or 5 times. Looked happy in himself but wasnt mad like he usually is.
Just had him out for a wee , he came out ok then just stood outside and wouldn't move , I got him inside and put him down and then when he tried to move he yelped.
To be honest I'm in a bit of a panic I'm on my own with the children hubby is at work and I can't physically get him to a vet. I don't even know where the emergency vet is.
I've got a horrible gut feeling that time might be running out for my favourite little boy  :'(
Please pray it's not as bad as I think it is.

I hope things aren't as bad as you fear but if you do need to get a vet, ring the emergency vet and request a home visit.

Sending lots of positive thoughts to Dennis  :luv:

I'm just wondering weather it's worth giving him tramadol. I've put him in his crate he has had his previcox . The vet gave me some tramadol to use should I ever feel he needed it ? I'm trying really hard not to panic but I can't help but  :'( thanks for your replies

Trust your instincts, you know your boy, if you think a Tramadol would help him, then go for it.

He is still eating fine but strangely hasn't had much to drink today ? He is still weein which is a good sign . He's strangely walking quite well but is much slower than usual.
I'm going to find emergency vets number now and see what they say ? I didn't realise they would come out ?

Just spoke to the nurse she's going to speak to the vet and call me back in 5- 10 mins. Ive give her a list of everything he is on to see if he can have the tramadol alongside, I think he can but want to make sure. I think we are looking to try the painkillers and only go there if I feel he is in more pain.
I feel sick with worry , I know I shouldn't really be thinking like this but if it is another disc , I may have to make an awful decision that I don't feel I'm ready too.
Knowing there is another 4 discs that could go , would it really be fair to put him through another surgery knowing it could just keep happening.

Just caught up with this Maria and I can only echo what everyone has already said - sending lots of hugs and love for you both.
I hope that Dennis was just feeling a little bit sore yesterday and that the tramadol helps him - it certainly seems to have done a little.

He hadnt moved a muscle all night he just cuddled up and went to sleep , i think he liked the fact that i was next to his crate again  ph34r

Jennie definitely loved this with us! she stopped downstairs in her crate alone last night (with Millie in a crate beside her as usual) and she cried a little but settled after a while - think I might be in for a little seperation anxiety to handle once she's better  :-\

lots of hugs  :-* :-*

He is quite lively today , but still hasn't had a wee which is rather strange especially at 3 o clock in the afternoon ? I'm keeping a very close eye on him and I'm going to take him to see the vet tomorrow , he has a lump on his spine where he had the surgery it's quite hard ( it's been there since the fluid lump went away ) , I think it will be some sort of scare tissue but I'm going to get it checked out while I'm there.
Thanks for your replies and sorry for my panic and morbid thoughts last night  ph34r

Well Dennis is feeling much better this morning and back to his usual crazy self , I've never met a dog that gets that excited to see the vet !!!
He was very happy with Dennis , lump is scare tissue. He was very happy with everything tbh , he just said that if we get any issues with pain like on Saturday to start back on the tramadol and see how he goes.
Hes happy for him start coming out of his crate , when the children are not about at first which is what I've been doing until Saturday.

Been out of it a bit over the weekend and just seen that Dennis is improving a bit. It is a slow process Maria but I'm sure you and Dennis will get there. If this helps any, when Jemima's swelling went down around the wound she looked a bit like a camel as the wound site was still really raised. She is three weeks post op tomorrow and she is at the flaky stage with the wound. The swelling is very, very gradually going down but still a bit raised and the scar is quite flaky. She going to see Andrew tomorrow so I'll see if he gives us anything useful that you could do with Dennis as well. On another note, I'm sure that our "settee" time with Jem is what has helped her. We have been doing manipulation of her legs while she's sat with us. There does need to be two of you there though incase one of you needs the loo or needs to make a drink, etc! We don't leave her to her own devices as she thinks that she doesn't have a problem and tries to skoot around the living room. Little madam! I do hope you both have a better day today. Me and Jem are wishing you lots of best wishes.  Keep fighting :luv:

When Dennis had the 1st disc go in 2010 , he was paralysed for months after his surgery , I used to get hubby to carry him upstairs and he used to lay on the bed and we used to do his massages and stretches and he really seemed to like it. This time Dennis was back using his legs only a day after surgery , and I've not been able to do alot of the massage because he will not stay still  ph34r

I'm begining to wonder if Dennis problems over the weekend where to do with the cold, I'd moved his crate into the dinning room and it is cooler in there , and Saturday was very cold. He has always been stiff and a little uncomfortable when it cold. So he back in the front room and as mad as ever today.

Maria the cold does affect them I have be very carefull when taking Charlie out when it has been snowing or is very frosty as he gets really bad muscle spasms in his back legs which I have to apply and warm compress to and masage his legs until the spasms stop.  So far this winter the weather has been kind to us but if it starts we plan to get the vet to do some acu puncture as she thinks this will help rather than medication.

The cold makes a big difference to Maggie as well Maria. As soon as it starts going towards freezing overnight she really struggles in the mornings with stiffness, and the same in the evening when we go out if its too cold.  I've got a heat pad that was supposed to be for hands that I heat up and just run over her back and leg muscles.  Or if we've been out and she's a donut and goes in the river when its too cold I'll bring her back and pop her in a slightly warm bath just to help her relax again.

Really pleased that the little fella is feeling more like him self.  :D Hope it was just the cold that gave him his set back.
