After we return from a walk in a particular place, Coco goes mad trying to "run away" from her paws. When this first happened I thought she might have picked a thorn but on examination couldn't find any thing and the effect also seemed to be on all 4 paws. I sprayed them with cold water which seemed to help and then thought a solution of bicarbonate of soda might counteract a sting effect.
Could it be the effect of nettle stings? After an hour she settles down and then the next day absolutely fine.
Is she particularly sensitive to something? Do her paws need to harden off?
Any thoughts?

You haven't said where she walks and what kind of surface it is, Fred has sore paws when we walk on road to the beach (the grit/salt on the road annoys his paws) but if it is on grass through the undergrowth etc it could well be nettles, I am sure someone more knowledgeable than me will be along to help soon.

Not sure if it will help but you could try paw wax or just vaseline to help protect them

This sounds like Freya when shes stepped on nettles. Drives her absolutely barmy until I give her a piriton (or asdas own version). After about an hour and a sleep shes fine

Nettle stings as Danni says ;)
An ankle deep bath of warm water with bicarb in it is definitely soothing, and piriton will relieve the effects if she is suffering badly :luv:

The walk is down by the River Trent over rough ground, she goes down to the waters edge, through brambles, goes through any undergrowth without question following a scent.

Are there nettles up at the moment, where you live? There are none showing yet here in Wiltshire. If it was a bit later in the year I'd be agreeing and saying yes, nettles, with no hesitation - but I'd be surprised if that was what it is, at the moment.
Could it be that someone has been spraying the paths or undergrowth with something and it is irritating her pads? That might be why spraying her paws helped.

we still have some nettles where I am in Wiltshire in sheltered areas in woodland etc :dunno: maybe the frost will finally kill them off now ;)

Yep loads of young ones all over the donkeys fields, thats why Freya is suffering, she avoids full grown ones

Ah I stand corrected - must keep my eyes open! Mind you this morning they will be frozen nettles, it is a bit chilly to say the least.
