We had the pleasure of going to Stoneleigh yesterday for a Junior Handling session which was organised by Eukanuba and in association with Dogworld.
Although it the main business of the day was a pre-crufts training session for the Juniors, adults were well catered for in sessions from experts on Getting the best from show dog (Mike Gadsby), Impressing the Judge (Di Johnson) nutrition (Kellie Ceccarelli) and breeding (Dr Ron James). There were also experts who were on hand to talk about grooming (Mich Dale, Margaret Anderson & Phil Davies) and Lisa Croft-Elliot & Carrie Russell-Smith talking about dog photography. Compared and a Q&A session by Andrew Brace, many people would pay to go to one of these events but it was totally free and even included lunch (although that was poor). I'm was sorry I didn't get into the talks as I was either kennel hand for Meg and Maverick or photographer!
Added to all the above, some of the best dogs in the country were brought along by the names in the business and they freely handed over their dogs for the juniors to try their hand at handling different breeds. Meg particularly enjoyed handling Donny (CH Afterglow The Big Tease - standard poodle) and Eric (CH Pamplona Bring me Sunshine the Bichon Frise) I loved the Kerry Blue whose name escapes me at the moment.
We took along Megs Pointer partner for Crufts so no Charlie but Alice Potter and Georgia Brown both flew the flag for cockers.
This was the second time this was held and well worth looking for if you have youngsters wanting to have a go at handling. I can't praise Marina Scott and Helena Hutchings enough for their patience with all the children.
