Post by: dianna1 on March 03, 2012, 10:23:31 AM
What is the best for treating tear staining on my puppy?

He is golden and has reddish stains  aound his eyes maybe from living on shavings.

I have never had any look removing tear stains  on Grace she is golden

Most of the time they are disguised in mud and dirt  :005:

As we don't show Merlin we haven't worried about the tear staining as it's really a cosmetic issue rather than one that is causing any problems for him (vet said that if he is under GA for anything else they'd look at whether it's a blocked tear duct or congenital issue in his nasal canal, failed the tear test on right eye).

All we do is wipe his eyes daily.  I had most luck when I used some diluted hibiscrub on it daily (5:1) and it really reduced it within a couple of weeks but still visible.

I know there are all sorts of suggestions from ensuring there is no beet pulp in food to things like angel eyes, have you searched previous posts?  It's actually how I first found out about COL because I was searching for info about it!

I have had good results from a natural product called Kleen Face from a website called Dog's stuff.
Dexter has a narrow tear duct. However being a golden retriever his head shape has changed considerably so it may partly be due to the changing in his skull too.

I was one of the people who looked into additives in their food and purposefully put him on a food without beet pulp. Which can cause a change in the PH balance of tears.

We don't have it but Bingleys jowels are stained. Have changed to a food without beet pulp some time ago to see if it makes a diff but wondering how long it will take...?
