Title: Any 3 legged Cockers?
Post by: LilahLoo on April 01, 2012, 10:20:22 AM
I got the results of Delilah's biopsy this week and it wasn't bad news but it wasn't good either.  It shows altered bone stucture but no tumour tissue but the specialist has said that doesn't mean there isn't any - her bone is so hard it wasn't easy to take the samples. Our options were another biopsy, CT guided this time.  Amputate and then they will biopsy the whole leg (the bigger the sample the better for the lab) and the third option really isn't an option for me just yet.

Delilah was in so much pain after the first biopsy I really can't put her through that again and it broke my heart to see it, so I have decided to have the amputation. She can't use her leg now anyway and from what I've read it's the most effective way to relieve the pain, also dogs adjust pretty quickly and don't realise they've had the limb removed.

Her op is tomorrow and today I'm feeling slightly sick with nerves for her.  I know I'm doing the right thing but I think it's going to be a big shock for me when I go to collect her.  I'm really not sure what to expect.  Do any of you have experience of having a 3-legged dog?  I saw a young Cocker recently and I didn't even realise he had a limb missing at first, he was very agile. Deliah's 7 1/2 but from what I've seen so far I'm optimistic she's going to cope ok.  I just want my little Cocker shadow back - I've missed her checking up on me all the time.

No experience of tri legged cockers , but a friend has a tri legged greyhound and you should see him run!!!

Wishing you and Delilah good luck for tomorrow. I am sure she will come through the op ok and gradually adjust well.  Lots of positive wishes :bigarmhug: and a  :-* for Delilah.

Thinking of you and your little girl. Hope all goes well tomorrow. No experience of having a 3-legged cocker, but my boy, Ollie, remained very agile despite having a broken leg with cast on a couple of years ago. I had a problem keeping him still! Am sure Delilah will adapt fine and will be so much happier without the pain.  All the best through this difficult time.

Hi,
My sister had a terrier cross about 10 years ago who only had three legs, she was a resucue/cruelty case so we never knew how she has lost her (front) leg. She came to my sister having only just had had the operation and she was a whirlwind!! It didn't slow her down in anyway, including the time she got the scent of something across the fields and my sister had to chase her and almost rugby tackle her to stop  :005: I'm sure you're little one will also manage just fine too.
It must be such a worrying time for you and such hard decisions to have to make, so much love and best wishes to you both for tomorrow and the next few weeks.

I'm so glad it didn't come back as definitely being an osetosarcoma. You're definitely making the right choice for your girl, this way you're minimising the risk of any spread if it is actually malignant, as well as alleviating her pain. Still, not an easy choice to make:(  Although I haven't had any personal experience, I've heard they take a little longer to adapt to the loss of a front limb, as they carry more weight than the hindlimbs, but once they've worked it out they do just fine:) Will be thinking of you and Delilah tomorrow and keeping fingers crossed that all goes smoothly:)

Hiya my collie x had her front left whole leg and shoulder removed due to a tumor in her bone  :'( she did well and started to recover she seemed to understand that she couldn't do what she used to any more she was about 14/15 thought and was coming to the end anyway. Unfortunatly about a month later she had to be pts  :'( she had an infection and other malignant tumours had been found and it wasn't fair to keep chopping bits off. I hope every thing goes well for you and delilah I'm sure she'll be fine. She's young buy some small children's t shirts so she can't get to her stitches instead of a cone as she may loose her balance at first. Of and a stair gate if you can to stop her trying the stairs at first.

I have no personal experience of 3 legged dogs, I have seen a couple out and about in our local park and they seem just as agile as any other Dog ;) For what its worth I think you are making the best decision, as the leg is causing pain at the moment it will probably improve her quality of life tenfold and hopefully her life expectancy too ;) Be thinking of you tomorrow :luv:

Thanks everyone for your kind thoughts and advice.  I've read some articles on the internet but getting messages from people with their personal experiences is reassuring.

We already have the stair gate but I will certainly get the t-shirt. I have a cone from when she was spayed, but she lost all her spatial awareness when she had it on.  The t-shirt sounds much better.

I'm just keeping everthing crossed now that whatever she has is contained in her leg.

I have a friend with a 3-legged labrador. She can run just as fast as her brother, and when they are playing and chasing each other you really do forget. However she does tire a little more easily, which is something to watch out for.

Sending you positive thoughts for tomorrow.
We used to live opposite a family who had 4 dogs - all of them were "tripods"!
There were 2 greyhounds and 2 whippets and when I got to know her I found out they were all rescues!  I honestly hadn't realised that ALL of them only had 3 legs - I thought it was just one greyhound and one whippet - then I saw them out and about off lead and you would literally never realise.  They were all bombing around together full of the joys of spring.
Really hope all goes well tomorrow and that your main problem will be keeping her quiet!!
Good luck and lots of hugs.

Hi
No experience of 3 legged cockers myself, but my mothers dog had to have a front leg amputated due to osteosarcoma. Sassy coped really well and lived for many years despite needing the removal of one eye as well. She was one of the happiest dogs you could meet. Good luck tomorrow :bigarmhug:

Hi I meet a lady daily on my walk in the woods with a three legged springer who is 12 years old. She has two other dogs one being a young springer. The three legged springer doesn't know she has three legs and gives the young one a run for her money. She is happy, healthy and has a really nice pleased to meet you bottom wag. The decision must have been very difficult but I'm sure you have done the right thing.

Hope all goes well tomorrow will be thinking of you :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:

I used to have a three legged springer. She lost a hind leg due to cancer. She adapted in absolutely no time and was back to running around and coming on walks with me. The remaining leg just seemed to reposition a little to the middle to give her more balance and she had real quality of life again.
The brilliant thing about dogs is that they do not feel sorry for themselves about losing a leg, as far as my dog was concerned the pain had gone and that's all she cared about.
For me personally the hardest moment was when i picked her up from the vets after the op. But seeing my dog cope so well made a lot easier.
I wish you you and Delilah all the best. I know what you are going through today.

Title: Update on Delilah's Op
Post by: LilahLoo on April 02, 2012, 05:54:15 PM
Thank you all so much, it's been such a great help hearing from you all with your well wishes, links, experiences and advice.  I am so encouraged by it all.

Delilah had her op and the vet is very pleased with how it went.  Her heart and blood pressure were very high but he believes that was due to the chronic pain and they have come down.  She is now on all kinds of pain relief and I will ring in the morning for an update. The chest x-ray is clear so fingers crossed if it is bone cancer there has been no spread.

It's been so strange coming home to a house with no dog this evening, I don't like it - I can't wait to get her home again.

Once again - thank you all.

We were driving out with the dogs this afternoon and passed a little dachshund that had both back legs amputated. His rear was supported on a small harness and wheels.  He looked as happy as larry walking along and if it wasn't for his wheels you wouldn't of noticed anything other than a happy chappy on his walk.

They are amazing at coping.  They don't know what is happening or worry about tomorrow so I guess they just get on with living.

Hope Deliah's recovery is without hiccups

Ou and Delilah keep poping into my head any news on how she's doing today?

I spoke to one of the nurses at the 'hospital' this morning and it all sounds positive.

Delilah had eaten her breakfast, she'd been outside and done what she had to do and is comfortable.  I asked if they were carrying her or letting her walk and she said she's very wobbly but walking.

I'm just itching to see her again.  I just keep seeing her little face and the expression on it when she comes in to the room to check on what I'm doing.

The vet who operated is supposed to call me tomorrow for an update and I'm keeping everything crossed she might come home on Thursday.

Hi, hoping very much that Delilah continues to do well after her op.

I know a couple of tripods that run around like they're unaware there's anything missing, but haven't met a 3 legged cocker, and have got to know several tripods that have come through rescue.  We have a 3 legged lab in at the moment and he seems to be the ungainliest I've so far met but he does OK.  He'd just had his boy op which probably didn't help his coordination when I had him out.  I think they're a bit worse off if it's a front leg missing rather than a back leg.  From your post it seems like Delilah's is a front leg? but I bet she'll be fine in no time.  Wishing you both all the best.

Title: 3 legged Cocker is home!
Post by: LilahLoo on April 04, 2012, 11:00:09 PM
I went to collect Delilah after work this evening.  I couldn't believe when the nurse walked her to the car from the kennel block - little madam was more interested in getting to the car than stopping to say hello to me!  The change in her since Monday is amazing, she was obviously in  a lot of pain.

The trouble now will be trying to keep her quiet - she's been trying to follow me round the house this evening and even made her way upstairs to find me.  I thought I'd closed the door to the living room but I obviously didn't close it properly!

It's so good to have her home and thanks again to all of you for your well wishes and keeping us in your thoughts.

Been thinking about Delilah, how is she doing now?

Hi - thanks for asking after her.  She's doing really well.  Her wound is healing nicely and we need to go to our vet next week to have the stitches out. I'm going to have a chat to him about building up her fitness for short walks as well.  I'm a little bit obsessed about her hurting her back again (she slipped a disc last summer and I was starting to build her walks up slowly when the lameness started in December).  She's well able to get around on her 3 legs but it looks very ungainly and while she'd be more than happy to just lie around the house all day snoring I'd like her to live as full a life as possible.

I am still waiting to hear from the specialist with the result of the biopsy on her leg - if I'm honest ignorance is bliss right now and I'm just enjoying having her pain free and happy again.

Just seen this post.  Glad to see the op went well.  One thing you will have to keep an eye on, esp with the previous incident with her disc is that her weight is kept at the lower end of her scale.  It will put less pressure on the other joints esp her remaining fore leg.  Also might be worth looking at putting her on joint suppliments, your vet would be able to advise on the best one for her

Thanks for the advice - she lost alot of weight after the biopsy, she was in alot of pain and went right off her food.  I'm going to do my best to make sure it stays off now as even though she's trimmed up alot since I got her, she has always been a big girl.  I'm very conscious that the lighter she is the easier it will be for her to get around and I want the best for her.
