Title: Good books on breeding....not necessarily on cockers
Post by: leisl on April 10, 2012, 02:25:49 PM
Hi

Can anyone recommend any good books on breeding?  Breeding in General, can be in laymans terms or a vetenarian book.

And before anyone jumps on the band wagon, NO, I am not going to breed.

I am going for my KCAI accreditation and there is a section on breeding.  I have some breeding friends (sounds distinctly odd) who I can ask questions but it is better if it evidence based that I can say that have red something.

The next question is, is anyone willing to lend me such books.  I promise to keep them well away from Krumble and return them super speedy quick.

Thank you.

There have been many books published but I think the one Sarah suggests, "Book of the Bitch" is still acclaimed as one of (if not) the best!

This was the book I was about to recommend.  If it's not in there then you really don't need to know it.

The ones I found most useful were these:

The whelping and rearing of puppies - by Muriel P Lee

Successful dog breeding - by Chris Walkowicz and Bonnie Wilcox

Canine reproduction - by Phyllis A Holst

The book of the bitch - By J M Evans and Kay White

Then as a side:  Nursing and hand rearing newborn puppies - by Betty Bloomfield

You can get the general gist with one book, but I don't think I could single out The book of the bitch as being THE book of reference as there were things in the other books that wasn't in that, and so I felt I was armed with the most information by reading them all.

Fab, thank you all for your replies.  I will start with Sarahs loan item and work my way through.

Apart from "the book of the bitch" and some notes that a friend of ours called chris gave me  ;) ;) i always pull out my copy of "dog breeding, the theory and the practice" by frank jackson. It's even more crumpled than my copy of "book of the bitch"!

I've got quite a pile of books on breeding if you're interested:

Breeding a Litter        JM Evans
Book of the Bitch       JM Evans  & Kay White
The whelping & rearing of pups    Muriel P Lee
The Technique of Breeding Better Dogs     Dr Dieter Fleig
Successful Dog Breeding   Chris Walkowicz and Bonnie Wilcox
Dog Breeding           Kay White

You are more than welcome to borrow them, but probably best you collect them as they weigh quite a bit...lol.
