When people ask the wrong q about your dog? The postman commented this morning that Darcey wasn't growing anymore, I said no thats it. He said that she was small. I said she was breed standard etc. Is that a springer, worker, big, small. Does it irritate you? Someone else today presumed mine were workers, I think they're clearly show  it upset me when they were small but as time goes on I realise how little others know.
-
depends on the time/day/month/weather or whether it's pay day or not :005:
TBH it doesn't really irritate me as I know what they are & that's what matters ;) ......but does make me giggle sometimes at what they 'think' they are
-
It doesn't bother me either after I've been asked questions such as this they alway so she buetiful do that makes up for what they said before that lol! Alsong as you and other cocker enthusiast now what your dog is and you live her/him to bits it shouldn't matter what anyone has to say about him/her!
-
Saying that, I met a beautiful girl cocker a while ago, I was convinced she was a show (i didn't say, I was too busy ooohing and awwing at her) and her owners said she was a worker. I'd settle for half abs half but I still don't believe them lol. But they know best, either way her and Charlie had a f good fun runaround together :lol2:
-
no i get amused when people think they know better than me , i mean obviously these strangers are experts and also they MUST have seen the pedigrees , mustnt they to know so much about someone elses dogs ;) ;)
-
I've had people with labradoodles and cockerpoos asking me if my working girls are poorly bred :o >:( as they don't look like what they 'think' cocker spaniels should look like ;).
I KNOW that they are very well bred and that is all that matters. :D
-
I get really irritated >:( when you come across people, often other dog owners you encounter on walks, who (scarily sometimes judging by things they say) think they KNOW everything. They make it their business to inform you, uninvited, that you know nothing, assume you have never so much as patted a dog before let alone been owned by one. I get - why isn't she having pups >:(, why isn't she spayed >:(, you should use this lead, that grooming tool, she's to big, has far too much coat to be a 'real' springer, is far too small for a springer....that has to be the most common one :lol2: etc etc and on and on.
...Muggins here bites her tongue....but one day I gonna tell em she's a short legged, long eared, lesser spotted Afghan and haven't they ever seen one before? :005:
-
Not at all, I'm pleased that they are interested enough to ask questions. Likewise, I wouldn't expect another owner to take it badly if I make a guess at what breed their dog is. There's a Springer at our local park that is a big chunky dog (with a great smile :luv:) and I'd love to ask the owner why they appear so different to most of the other Springers I see, unfortunately I've never seen the owner yet.
-
No it doesn't bother me either, I am just pleased that they have noticed my most handsome little boy :shades:

I agree with your sentiments exactly. ;)
-
No, it doesn't upset or worry me. I have had the strangest comments as most of my breeds aren't well known (Pyrenean Mountain Dog, American Cocker Spaniel, Saluki...), so I just answer politely and give a bit more information if someone seems genuinely interested. ;)
I'm sure some of us cocker experts would (or have already) ask some silly questions about other breeds that we don't know anything about... I don't assume that I know everything there is to know about every breed there is. ;)
E.g.
"My friend has a dog like yours, but he is black"... well, pyreneans don't come in black, your friend has a newfoundland.
"Where is the whisky barrell on your dog?"... he doesn't have one because my dog is not a St. Bernard.
"Look mum, there's a sheep in that car"... :lol2:
Car stops next to me and man pointing at my pyrenees says "what is that?"... a dog... :o :lol2:
"Is this a long haired greyhound?"... no, he is a Persian greyhound, the breed is called a saluki.
"My friend and I were arguing whether your dog is a greyhound or a whippet"... neither, he is a saluki lurcher.
"I can see that your dog is some sort of spaniel, but which one?"... he is an American cocker.
"Is that a clumber spaniel?"... no, he is an American cocker.
"Is your dog a setter puppy?"... no, she is a cocker spaniel, though not a typical one as she is a cross of two types
etc. etc.

Ha ha thats similar to what we called Milo our orange roan pup when he had his long fluffy baby coat , he really did look like a little afghan

To me random people not knowing what my dogs are isn't all that important in the grand scheme of things, it certainly doesn't offend me. I have plenty more important stuff I can get wound up about :lol2:
Amongst other things I've been told that mine must be Springers, that they don't look like Cockers, asked if Tilly's a Field Spaniel or if Ro and Caoimhe are Vizslas, Irish Setters or 'miniature Golden Retrievers' and asked if Ro is Caoimhe's mum and Tilly her dad but it doesn't bother me. Generally it's well meant and I find it funny, people are usually genuinely interested when I say what they are and about them being working dogs etc. but if someone was particularly rude or ignorant I would just give them the brush off and walk away.
-
We were walking OH's parents lurcher (who for a lurcher is a giant) - some man stopped us and said he was a great greyhound - we corrected him, he said "no, he's a 36" greyhound" - he's STILL a lurcher, "you should get him running on the greyhound track" HE's NOT A GREYHOUND.
^however considering he's not trained to run, doesn't do much running I bet he'd still beat all the greyhounds.
-
Well I think every dog owner gets funny comments, today I met a woman in the park and she had a beautiful standard poodle that didn't have the poodle cut... All shaggy, a couple walked past and called out " is that a labradoodle or a poodle without a cut" the owner of the poodle replied nicely that her dog was a purebred poodle and she has always had them and never given the poodle cut. The couple nicely replied back " sorry didn't mean to offend , just love poodles, and were chatting about whether your dog was a shaggy one or one of the mixes ". Could be offensive but everyone was polite and jokey.... No offense taken by anyone. Funny world ... The doggy world ;)

It doesn't really bother me that people don't know that my boys are WCS, unless they persist liike one lady, tying to tell me that it's very unusual to have a solid coloured Springer and it's even more amazing that I've got 2 of them >:( She wasn't convinced when I explained that they were WCS and her parting shot was "I'd check their pedigree's if I was you".
Another lady stopped to tell me that Indy was just the most beautiful Red Setter puppy she'd ever seen, but was so interested when I told her his breed. They've both been mistaken for Sprockers and Field Spaniels but generally most people ask what type of dogs they are and seem genuinely interested when I tell them. :D

I think that's it. It's the touch of arrogance sometimes that despite any explanation given they still think you need 'help' and/or are misguided and that they are right :-\
-
ive lost count of the amount of times someone has told me that my gypsy is an american cocker spaniel because of her coat........its amazing, so thick and her skirt would swing and sway to the floor if i let it grow that long....but shes clearly a show ECS when you look at her head.....ive even had to show someone her 5 gen pedigree so they believe me and even them they said "how do you know thats right???".....errrr because she came from good breeders/lines who have been doing it for years and wouldnt risk telling a porky for fear of their reputation......grrrrrrr rant over, sorry!!!.... ph34r
-
Yes lottielu, I agree it is the arrogance AND ignorance. My aunt recently visited, and she has never owned a dog, but told me with great authority that my Flo could not be a pure cocker because she looks nothing like the cockers my parents had when I was a child.... This is because they were reds and golds and Flo is a fluffy coated orange roan... I didn't even bother to defend... Seemed silly to debate with someone who has no idea, but told my parents and their view was that my aunt has to have an opinion on everything and knows nothing about anything ;)
-
it just makes me giggle! When jasper was smaller I was asked if he was a dalmation, a springer and even an english setter! I know his colouring is unusual but come on!! :005:

I know exactly what you mean :005: :005:

I got TOLD this morning that my spaniel would grow much bigger cos Springers are big dog and her Dad has one (so it must be true) after I said she was probably just about full grown.
She was particularly quiet when I informed her that my dog was in fact a Cocker and would not get any bigger!!
-
It doesn't offend me at all. People very rarely know what Barney is (Basset Fauve de Bretagne) but I have to admit to getting quite excited when someone does and usually spend ages talking to them about the breed! Most people think he is a cross and when I say he's a Basset Fauve I think they often go away still thinking he is some sort of Basset Hound cross. One couple sat outside a cafe were quite upset when I ruined their game - they had been betting with each other for ages as to what mix of breeds he was.
People usually know what Pippa is - she has an unmistakable cocker personality and bum waggle!
-
I have been asked "what breed is your dog" about twice that i can remember which didn't offend me i just thought the peeps were a bit ignorant as to me a cocker spaniel is a common well known dog ph34r but that's just imo.
The only thing that could have offended me i suppose but didn't, was other peeps saying she is small.Tbh,i don't think she is but i have never measured her to see if she meets the breed standard :-\ and i wouldn't care if she didn't as i never planned to show her.
If you have an unusual breed i would have thought it quite common to have people either hazard a guess or be totally unaware as to what it is.
-
It always make me laugh when I hear people talking about Ben and Harry and suggesting that the 'old one' must be the young ones mum as they look so alike. Its such a good job Ben dosn't understand :005:
-
I've never been asked what breed Lady is, but several years ago, a man walked past us at the shops and said "What an ugly dog you have" ........ and continued walking! I think I was more shocked at the time at what he said and that it was a rude thing to say. Didnt offend me tho because I was shocked more than anything!!
However, on Wednesday evening, I met this gorjuss dog with the curliest coat ... I assumed it was some kind of poodle, so I asked the owner if this was the case, but he took the time to tell me that the dog is a Bedlington Terrier. He was just like a real life teddy bear!!!

How rude! I would be offended, and confused as to how anyone could think a cocker is ugly
-
My papillons are often mistaken for chihuahuas or more often pomeranians. Most are interested to know where the breed come from but there have been a few who seem offended when I correct them..
I just find it amusing. They are often the biggest toy group behind Cavaliers in shows but still very few know what they are.
What does annoy me is when people judge their temperament as snappy, yappy little dogs when I have found them to be the sweetest nature little things. If people take a few minutes to introduce themselves then Zara and Lexi soon win them over :005:

Try owning a Boxer you would know what offensive remarks are then ph34r , i lost count of the times Jake was insulted when we had him, i must say i would often be offensive back in those days , one woman pushing a pram said god your dog is ugly and i replied yeah just like your kid , she was most offended ph34r I dont bother these days

Why the hell would you be offended ?
At least the person in question is being friendly and showing a interest in you and your dogs ( which is more than a lot of people do these days ) Ok perhaps the person doesnt know what breed you have or anything about the breed - So what ?????
If someone said something that wasnt very nice then i could understand you getting mad but jeeeeezzzzz lighten up a bit
-
No it doesn't offend me. Especially since just the other day I met a Manchester terrier and asked if he was a Dobermann puppy ph34r ph34r
-
I really don't care - I'm proud of my miniature german shorthaired pointer :luv:
Everyone has a different perception about what they like in a dog and what they don't like and not all know their breeds. Lets be honest here, there is so much variation in the breed and so many cross breeds that it would be difficult for even an expert to get it right all the time ;)
-
Looking at my worker/show cocker and my friend's show cocker, they look very different, so I am not surprised if people aren't sure what Nerys is (at the moment she is a hairy teddy bear :lol2:)
-
Does it offend me - no not usually :D
When Smudge and I are out, the people we meet (not always with dogs) normally say 'what a lovely, friendly, dog' and that is the best feeling. :luv: :luv:
-
Not at all offended. Not everyone is in to dogs and as long as my dogs sit when people stroke them that is all I care about. My dogs are pets The fact that they are show strain does not come in to it. I wanted show strain for my own preference. I guess if people did not know they were dogs I would worry :005:
-
I'm not normally offended Charlie was often mistaken for a springer pup and when i explained he was a cocker I was once asked if I was sure because "they dont come in that colour" which did miff me a little bit, not because they thought he was a springer but that they thought I didn't know what my own dog was.
Mostly people stop and say how lovely they are and that makes me a very proud Mummy :luv:
-
I don't get offended .. I'm happy with my springer puppy and my father and son cockers :luv: :005: Explaining it's Millie and Jennie .. "billie and lennie? aren't they lovely boys?" .. "no Millie, with a M .. Mil- never mind .. yes they are" I obviously don't speak clearly enough :005:
The father / son thing is one of the reasons I've started buying girlie collars from Dom / Brown Bee :005: :005:

No, why on earth would it
-
I suppose it all depends what character you are and what is said really. When some Dad told his kiddie that Lyla wasn't a proper cocker I couldn't have cared less. However when someone once called Chloe fat when she was bloated with the drugs she was on, I was heartbroken.
-
I suppose I'll have all this to come, but I reckon I'm already prepared. I'm constantly asked if my Irish Water Spaniel is some sort of doodle or poodle :003:

Oooh, lucky you! I love IWS! :luv: Only seen them at shows, though. I think some pics are in order...

Frequent comments about Roly ... She's very friendly isn't she?!! :005: ... well, he is a bit of a girly-boy!
Because he's only small, they often assume he's a puppy, when he's actually older than both the other spaniels.
Nothing particularly to get offended over though!
Re size of dogs, there's a huuuuge springer goes into the park where I take the dogs, which isn't much smaller than Molly labrador, but then at the other end of the scale, Daisy sprocker's dad was only small & not much bigger than Barkley my other cocker (of average proportions :005:).
I've occasionally been asked if Daisy's a puppy still, as she's only small ... no, she's a springer x cocker ... which apparently seems to confuse people, as the response is a puzzled look and an 'oh'!!
-

So not so much your character but the circumstance. Any character is likely to be very sensitive when their dog is suffering :-\
-
Meh.....I was just hyper sensitive where Chloe was concerned. Probably because the inference was that I wasn't being a good owner by letting her get that way. I don't get offended usually but I can completely understand that some people are.
-
No, it doesn't bother me. When I had Fizzy dobie (sleeping now) I was asked while out on a walk with her and Tiffany the B&T cocker if they were both dobermans :005: :005: :005:
Sasha is, I think, a worker x show, and I normally just say she's a spaniel - if she's at her fluffiest and someone is adamant she can't be a spaniel I say that maybe there's a bit of afghan in there - and they usually nod knowingly :shades:
