Title: Twice as much fun!
Post by: debbiedaywalker on May 17, 2012, 10:40:57 AM
I've been 'umming and arring' about getting a friend for my boy, having only been a 'single' dog owner with Dexter, who'll be 4 in July, and my first Cocker, Tessa, who I lost five years ago.
I felt 'greedy' which was endorsed by a lot of (possibly well meaning) 'Ohhh, you'll have twice as much work,' and 'twice the cost' comments from family and associates.  So much so that I have kept my new pup, Dylan quiet from a lot of people.

So, I was prepared for the extra work, the extra cost (you can always give something up).  But I can honestly say that I haven't noticed either, all I have noticed is how much fun we are having and how elated and on top of the world I feel!

I know it is 'early days' and they aren't best buddies yet, but Dex is getting more and more used to Dylan everyday, and I know that they're going to be.

Who cares what your friends and family say?!

I do have one problem with the whole situation however...PHOTOS.

I'm sure it's got to be hard for Dexter to have "someone new" sharing "his" attention, but he will get used to it, and you'll wonder just what everyone was saying.

Edit:
I actually saw him on another thread  :luv:

Yes Bluebell, I can totally agree with you - I've wanted two for so long now, wish I'd done it sooner!  You want more photos Dissydoodlenoodle? You may regret that hehehe!

I shouldn't have read this post.

I was having this conversation with a friend recently. I would just feel so guilty leaving Delilah at home to take a fitter dog on big walks - it would feel like I was cheating on her!  That's so daft when you write it down!  :005:

I'm so pleased to read you have no regrets. Think I'll be ummming and ahhhing a while longer.

Lovely to hear about your new addition :luv: :luv: I was like you when I got my first cocker Charlie as already had a 8 yr old labrador but would never go back to having just one dog now, I love having multiple dogs so much not long after Charlie two turned into three & Toby joined us :005:

Treble the fun!
T y Steff, I do feel VERY lucky - Lilahloo, at the moment I'm doing one walk/carry with the two, then taking Dex out on his own in the evening when Hubby get's home.  When Dylan start going out I'll do more smaller ones till he's bigger.
Dipsydoodlenoodle - keep your eye out  ;)

i ummed and ahhhed for a good couple of years about getting another cocker...and had the same response as you regarding costs...time..going back to puppy training...being 'tied' down with a young one from well meaning friends and family....but eventually i went for it and got Tilly just before xmas....and i so pleased i did.
It amazing fun having 2...and double the kisses and cuddles. Like you say you dont really notice the extra expense...i just cut back on other luxuries and have not missed a thing.
The only thing i have more of that i hate is 'fluff'...Tilly's hairs seems to be everywhere...didnt notice so much with Erin as she is black but Tilly's white hairs are permanantly floating around the house....but an extra hoover is worth it all when she snuggled up on my knee.

Congratulations.

I definitely agree - it may be twice the work and twice the cost but double the love and fun. I wouldn't change a thing  :luv: :luv:

I love having two and we also took along time to decide that we were going to get a second.  The main difference I've noticed is that Troy now needs a lot more food than he did when he was an only dog.  I think this is due to him playing with Jack so they don't rest as much. Anyone else found this?

Congratulations! If I'd have listened to all those well meaning friends we'd never have had one cocker let alone 2! We've just got our 2nd cocker and love seeing them together and cuddling up with our new baby. It is hard work at the moment but sooo worth it.
