Kali went back to see Laurie today. The idea was to look in her ears to see if there was any improvement but it didn't turn out like that! I had said that she seemed to be getting worse again with her scratching and ear rubbing and when Laurie took her through the back Kali wouldn't let her near her ears. She brought her back because she was getting too stressed out. So.....she goes in tomorrow to be put under and a thorough investigation of what the heck is going on will be done. On a more worrying note, she has started with a ravenous appetite. She has always been a greedy dog and it may be just that only getting worse but they will be doing bloods too, just to check all is ok with her.
I said that someone mentioned a heart murmur a while back but I wasn't convinced because she gets so stressed at the vets. Laurie is going to listen whilst she is under anaesthetic...apparently when they are sedated it is actually magnified so should be easy to hear.
Fingers crossed for my baby.

Hope it all goes well tomorrow :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:

Sheryl sorry to hear Kali is not well, I hope you get some answers soon. Our Charlie was diagnosed with a heart murmur 4 years ago at his anual checkup and booster it was another 2 years before he needed any treatment for that and now 2 years on with Vetmedin he is still doing OK although his heart murmur has gotten worse in the 2 years since he saw the cardio vet. But at 13y/o he is good for his age.

I cannot write much but she has a definite heart murmur and has just gone back under sedation so they can x ray her to see if there is any heart enlargement. Beside myself..... :'(

Right, I have had my usual blubbering session on the phone to Bluegirl and I am feeling more optimistic. Kali has a Grade 2 murmur. I suppose I was shocked because I always believed it was her getting frantic that caused the noise but hey ho. She has had an x ray and her heart is not enlarged and on some heart scale or other Laurie says she is at the high end of normal....I think, I will ask again at 2pm. That means that the coughing she does is still just down to her palate problems. She had full bloods done and all is within normal parameters so that is good.
Her completely ruptured right ear has healed but her left is still torn and Laurie said she could smell something going on from her mouth so it has to be her soft palate which is infected. She is now inclined to agree with me that her palate infection caused the ear membrane ruptures. She will get stronger antibiotics for 10 days or so to try and get rid of it.
Bluegirl is going to get me a list of immune boosting and heart helping herbs so I can help Kali and I am going to try and get a kilo of weight off her so her heart load is lessened. I am still heartbroken about it, I put my heart and soul into my dogs and things like this throw me off kilter for a while but my aim now is to do the best for Kali and her heart.
Thanks for thinking of us xxx

Your obviously stressed out yourself, with good reason. I'm hopeful there'll be some good news to post tomorrow.
Best wishes to you both :bigarmhug: :luv:

Am so pleased Bluegirl has helped you talk through the information. Often its the shock of getting news that makes all the rest of it seem massive too, and talking it through with someone helps you break it down into manageable chunks :luv: Sounds like you have a plan to address Kali's issues which is very positive. Of course you're heartbroken tho... we all know just how much your girls mean to you, and its heartbreaking to see them have to go through "stuff", but... they have you on their side - which is a massive massive positive and boost for them to overcome any problems :luv: :bigarmhug:

Sheryl when our Charlie saw the cardio vet she told me to suplement him with high doses of Omega 3 the equivalent of EPA/DHA of 900mg per day. I did buy the vets Gomega which a spray put onto their food but cost was £35 for a months supply. I found Human quality Omega 3 giving 550mg per capsule so give Charlie 2 caps per day just add them to his kibble and he wolfs them down cost £9.49 for 60 caps and get 60caps free which last 2 months. If you are interested you can buy them here

Big hugs to you and Kali you are sure going thru the mill

Well, I was wrong when I thought that being the high end of normal was good. It's not bad but it just means that in terms of heart size, it is as far as it can go without being classed as enlarged :-\. Laurie was saying that some dogs hearts just get bigger with age and nothing to do with murmurs. Anyway she is happy to leave Kali the way she is as her chest and lungs are clear and her pulse is ok. She thinks she will check her every 6 months and try to listen to her heart to see if there is any change.
She is such a great vet. She said that she is going to do everything she can to make sure Kali stays fit and healthy! I told her that I know I annoy some of the vets with my attitude but she said that she would rather everyone is like me as the people who don't care are the ones that make her want to weep.....
Sometimes you just get a vet and their love of animals shines through, you just know that it is a vocation for them and she is one of those vets :luv:
-
Sheryl, I am very sorry you have not had the best news about Kali. Take comfort in the fact that you have a vet who cares, and treats you and your girls with respect. I hope things stay steady for her, and with a few supplements and your care Kali will stay well. :bigarmhug:

Thank you lass xxx

My first Cocker was still fit, active and quite slim at 10 years old but was diagnosed with a heart murmur after he started coughing when we were out walking on an especially windy day. This was about 15 years ago now so I can't remember exactly what was wrong with his heart but it was either a grade 2 or 3 murmur. He was put on a daily dose of Frusemide and lived until he was 16 years and 51 weeks old with only one increase in the dose of the medication during the 6+ years he was on it.
I was absolutely stunned when it was diagnosed but I can honestly say that with the help of the Frusemide he continued to live a normal active life.
I know it's been a big shock for you today Sheryl but I think the fact that it only needs to be monitored at the moment is encouraging and it's wonderful that Kali has a mum who will do everything to keep her well and has a great vet too :luv: :bigarmhug:

A vet you trust is worth so much I think... between the two of you Kali is in the very best hands. Sending huge hugs to you and Kali, and sending all positive thoughts that with the careful monitoring and management as necessary Kali continues to lead you a merry cocker dance long into old age! :luv: xx

Big :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: to you both.
As with humans veterinary science enables dogs with the help of meds to lead a normal happy life, and it sounds as if you have a wonderful vet, they're worth their weight in gold, so keep thinking positive thoughts :luv:
