Ive been using regular frontline on Riley , till I saw that some say its not as effective . I didnt know that frontline combo was a totally different product requirng a vet prescription.
Also heard advocat is a popular product too.
My question is the products requiring vet prescription on say vet uk etc, is it cheaper to ask vet for prescription and then forward to vet uk
(would I pay for prescripton to the vet then pay for the product) and how much is a vet prescription, OR would the vet issue the whole thing at a similar cost . Does anyone have any experience, what do you do ?
Also which one covers ticks as well.

I used to use Frontline but over time it became less effective and my vet suggested I switch to Advocate which I did.
I used to buy it from the vet but it was quite expensive so I ordered it from Vet UK but as you say you need a prescription from the vet. I got one at a cost of about £10 and then ordered from Vet UK and the saving was still sufficient to make it worthwhile doing it. The vet gave me a prescription for 6 months but I don't know if this is standard practise.

I would love to try biospotix because it is a natural flea and tick preventer but I can't really can't really find any reviews but I am figuring its worth a go because its natural

I stopped using frontline because it stopped being effective snd switched to stronghold, which has been very effective. I have just bought some advocate for Dylan because it covers lungworms, (I am worried that he might eat a slug :020: he's a munchkin) but neither kill ticks, do you get many ticks where you are Jane?I've only ever had one, in 17years ;)

I buy 6 pipettes at at time 10-25kg large dog £32.99 & no postage this was back in march 2011; January 2012 for the same amount, it was £11.84, discount coupon 59p, postage 96p, total £12.20. Same place. I assume it must have been an offer, so you have to shop around.
It covers flea, larvae, whipworm, hookworm, roundworm, angiostrongylus,crenosoma, heartworm, otodectes (earmites), sarcoptes, demodex, louse. It doesn't specifically say lung worm, I'm sure it was because I mentioned all our slugs & snails, that the vet recommended it.(Maybe lung worm is one of the strange unpronounceable words :lol2:

I was concerned Julie that there was no mention of lungworm on the list, so I went back into my Vet's and they confirmed that lungworm is covered by Advocate, must be one of the strange unpronounceable words :005: off to google them all now, just to make doubly sure - exciting stuff eh? Suppose it beats watching the cycling! :lol2:

I've looked at the packet and it doesn't mention ticks and I think I've seen another thread on here that mentions something else that people give their dogs to cover this.
I'm off now to look into Discount Pet Care as it seems I may be able to get my Advocate cheaper there... :D

I have just been looking at posts from the money matters forum and it looks like this site is extremely dodgy. They are also saying if you import a prescription only med you are equally responsible! The meds are posted from abroad and frequently are not arriving so please be carefull.

Thank you everyone. With regards to ticks Im not sure whether we have many here.
We live right at the coast, we never venture into wooded areas etc, still Im not sure where ticks would live to be honest. Thanks again.

I don't understand how DiscountPetCare can supply a prescription only medicine without a prescription :huh: That doesn't make sense to me as surely this would be illegal :huh:
I had a look at their website and I couldn't find any contact address (might be there and I wasn't thorough enough) so I wonder whether this company is resident in the UK? There are good reasons for medicines being prescription only and I don't see how they're getting round the regulations. If they're an overseas company how can you be sure you're buying the genuine product? After all just because they say that it is, doesn't necessarily mean that it is. :-\

Advocate doesn't cover ticks. Advantix does but you can't use the two of then together. We recently stayed in the woods and I switched to advantix and milbemax for wormer, however come september we'll be back on advocate only.

I think this is definitely true, I've had to switch to Advocate as I kept finding fleas on the dogs despite them being Frontlined regularly >:( They had NEVER had fleas until late last year when they got them from a friend's dog which stayed with us and it was a struggle to get rid of them properly, the Frontline just wasn't working - I was treating the house as well with Indorex spray and daily hoovering, but despite this and Frontlining them I was still finding fleas (not loads but sometimes 3 or 4) merrily running around on them giving me the finger >:( :lol2: - and our vet has said they've had a lot of people say the same.
Constant hoovering, boil washing of dog bedding and covers etc. and several goings over of the house and car with Indorex combined with the Advocate finally seems to have done the trick as regular flea combing hasn't turned any up for quite some time now. I don't like putting lots of chemicals on them but I don't really have a choice now :-\ They come into contact with so many dogs and are in and out of various cars etc. because of my job so I can't have them keep getting reinfested, plus it was a horrible thought, rank creatures (the fleas, not the dogs :005:).

I use frontline spray on my cats. The large bottle, 500ml, is £70 from my vets! I looked online and could get it for around £35-£40 plus postage, but needed a vets prescription. So, I rang up my vets, they said they could give me a prescription no problem, it would cost £7. But, they needed to see one of the cats first, and the appointment cost would be £24! So with the cost of the appointment and the prescription, I might as well just buy it from the vets!!
I done a little more digging around, and found the spray on a french website, no prescription needed, it is exactly the same as I would buy from the vets or in the UK, for I think, £45 delivered! It was here a week later! I can try and dig out the name of the website if anybody wants it?

Regarding the ticks Jane - my two only ever seem to get them if they have been in an area with sheep around. I reckon we get about 10-20 a year but they are easily removed with tweezers - I just check them frequently

I don't like using lots of chemical's on Bob
i use Billy no mates for fleas and ticks, and get him tested for worms and lungworms

I am 'testing' a herbal flea collar on Smudge - as I have difficulty myself with the chemicals in the usual deterrents. I have only had it on him a day. (I used to use frontline regular but it was losing its effect) I also use a flea comb and a bowl of boiling water to catch and kill any of the little blighters ph34r

Thank you Jan, I was thinking they might be more prevelant (sp) in a farm area, countryside etc.
We live on the coast and Riley,s walks are mainly on the beach, seafront , parks etc, but will be aware in the country if/when we go.

We usually buy advocate online from Viovet but having run out we just had to have an emergency dash to the chemists (Co-op) to get something to treat a flea infestation after the dogs played with my sister's dog this morning who is up to visit and has brought some little passengers with her. I ended up buying Ectoline which has the same active ingredient as advocate and frontline but is cheaper. Hoping the dogs haven't caught many and the Ectloine will quickly do the trick.
My sister's poor dog Poppy has loads. Luckily, I had some advocate left over from when Pippa was a puppy and as Poppy is a small pug cross we have treated her with that. My sister had been treating her every four weeks with Bob Martin spot-on, which demonstrates how ineffective that is.
