Title: Male dogs
Post by: Amanda463 on August 31, 2012, 01:42:48 PM
I currently have 2 girl Cockers. I found out that Dizney my 16 year old has Lymphoma and has a few weeks left.
I know Minney my 5 year old will miss her immensely so I was thinking to get another Cocker a few months after Dizney has passed.
I've always had girl dogs but I am considering a boy dog now.
The thing that puts me off male dogs is when they cock their legs to pee on everything in the garden.
I heard that if a male is neutered early on they squat to wee.
Can anyone put me straight on this at all?  :D

So sorry Dizney has Lymphoma  :'(

Regarding your question about neutered dogs squatting for a wee....thats a myth i'm afraid  :shades:
My neutered dog Alfie cocks his leg (well 9 out of 10 times)  :luv:

Darcy, a boxer i look after regularly, was neutered at around 8 months I believe, he is a prolific leg cocker!

Charlie has just turned 13 months old...he's un-neautered.

He squats to wee in the garden - he's cocked his leg a grand total of 2 or 3 times in the garden, but for the last 3-4 months outside he 99% of the time cocks his leg.

He's not as bad as I imagined he might be with his leg cocking even when out.

I am so sorry to hear about Dizney!   :luv: What a great age, she's obviously well loved  :D  Best wishes for the time you have with her.

Some dogs do cock their legs, some are just so damn lazy they don't whether neutered or not!

Always had boy cockers, always will!  :D

Sorry to hear about Dizney  :'(. My 9 year old dog has never once cocked his leg, laziness i think. I dont think cocking leg should be a big problem. Ive always found girls more hard work with the dogs with had, the boys have always been that laid back there almost horizontal. Dont think theres much in it though, you love them all the same.  :luv:

Our springer never ever cocked his leg in all the 14 1/2 years we had him. He wasnt neutered either.

Wow!..some varied responses there!  :lol2:
Thanks..I thought it was probably a wind up so best to ask the people that know.
Thanks for all the well wishes for Dizney too..she will be very very missed when she leaves us.
Another pup will by no means be a replacement for her, I think it's more important for Minney to have a companion as she has always had Dizney there for her.
Another pup will help bring lightness back into the house after the dark days that we are currently going through with poor Diz.
Ironically today Dizney is motoring around like a young pup herself, you wouldn't know she was sick!  Long may it last

Taz was neutered when he was 7 months - he didnt cock his leg until he was 3, now at 5 years does a combination of leg cocking or squating.

I have found Taz much harder/stubborn to train than the bitches i have had, but that may be down to breed (bitches were labrador and collie cross)

Henry was neutered at 6 months, he is now 19months and cocks his leg everytime. No brown stained lawn though, garden is fine.

He even didi it in my MIL pristine living room, against the bookcase, he's not been invited back  :005:

Sorry to hear about Dizney  :'(

I have two neutered males, Charlie squats in the garden but cocks out on walks  :005:  Dexter just seems to squat, I think he's lazy.  My friend has a 3 year old entire male who squats and has never cocked  :dunno:

Toby Bear is 15months  (neutered at 6 months) & still squats to wee, with no sign of changing  :005:    :luv:

If we have any inappropriate toileting in/out of the house, it is usually down to Livie when she's pre/post season  :dunno:

So sorry to hear about Dizney.
I have only ever had bitches - until I got Dexter.
He is amazing!!!! He doesn't wee in inappropriate places (only twice in his life - once at PAH where other dogs had peed up a display, so he added his too and once on his first ever holiday when he weed up the door curtain  ph34r)  He sometimes squats to wee, but also cocks his leg - depends what is around.  He has also been known to cock two legs against a flower trough, so standing on two legs only!!!
I would definitely have another dog in the future - he is so loving and loyal (not that my bitches aren't loving and loyal - he is just even more so if you see what I mean!!!)

Toby (2) is our first male cocker. He was neutered early and hasn't cocked his leg. He can though, he liked having the inside of his right leg tickled and he'll hold it up then, but he won't cock his leg to pee. It did take him a bit longer than the girls with the house training but he's spot on now.

We had him not long after losing our Lucy (almost 13) and we were originally looking for a bitch but I'm glad Toby found us. I think it would have been too hard to have a cocker that was too like Lucy. He's an absolute dream. He's so loving I can't put it into words. Where Lucy was independent and even a little bossy at times but up for everything, Toby is a big softy and my baby. He was 19 weeks when we had him and I think if we had still had Lucy he would have adored her. He very much likes you to be the boss and he is far more interested in his family group than anyone outside it.

My suggestion would be to go to a cocker show, if you can, and see. You can have an opportunity to have a look at the differences between the boys and girls and talk to loads of people who will help you decide and see who is breeding the dogs that you like. That's if within 5mins of being there you don't say "I want them all!"  :luv: Often breeders may have slightly older dogs, possibly a bitch closer in age to Minney, if that might suit you better.

Don't let people make you feel guilty about having another cocker. You never replace the ones you have to let go. It's a testament to how wonderful Dizney is and all the love and good times you have had that you'll be able to give another dog a home despite how much it hurts.

Diesel is neutered he mainly squats but does cock aswell.
Olli entire he mainly cocks but does occasionally squat, Olli is a strange one and sometimes cocks when he does a poo  ph34r
Neither pee allover but Olli does sometimes pee ontop of Diesels and has been known to pee on Diesel when hes put his head under when Olli has been cocking  ph34r  :005: :005: :005:
Sorry if this sounds bad but dont let if put you off, neither pee allover and garden is free from staining  :005: :005:

Hi, I'm sorry about Dizney.

Re male cockers hiking their legs to pee in the garden, you might find a male more garden-friendly than a bitch because males are supposed to cause less brown patches on lawns.  This is because they go around parcelling out their wees in small amounts whereas a bitch just goes and squats in one place.  This releases all the nitrogen on one spot and causes the brown patches.  So I'm told anyway.  I do think we have less brown patches now with a boy and a girl than we did with two girls.

Alfie is neutered and cocks although it took him until he was 8 months or so to do so.  He tends to cock most on his walk sometimes 7 or so times.  But he doesn't do it in the garden.  I think you will find they only cock to cover up a former dogs wee this is where the term top dog comes from I believe.  I can't see him cocking in the garden unless he genuinely needs a wee, Alfie just lifts his leg he doesn't necessarily need to be weeing up something.

Depends on the dog.  I have two males, both neutered.  The terrier was neutered at 7 years old and always cocks his leg in the garden and on walks.  The spaniel was neutered at a year old and cocks his leg everywhere.  The spaniel is the more dominant of the two and he'll lazily cock his leg in the garden, but on walks he hikes up his leg as high as possible when marking.  The spaniel still marked the garden even when he was the only dog in the household so some dogs cock their legs to mark regardless of whether there are other dogs around.
