My black cocker Wesley is nearly 15 months old and when I took him to the vets recently with a little cut on his neck that wouldn't heal the vet informed me that he may have a food allergy. She said he had a yeast ear infection and to stop all treats and just feed his food (at the time this was Royal Canin Adult Medium) I treated his ear with ear drops, his cut with some cream and stop treats.
I re visited the vets two weeks later and the cut was better but the vet said Wes still had discharge in his ear and needed an ear flush (£180.00!!) She also said I need to change Wes' food to a hypo-allergenic food she recommended something that he has never eaten before as a process of elimination. I have tried Burns Duck and Brown rice dried food.
After another couple of weeks I have switched food and flushed out his ear with a fungicidal ear wash. His ear doesn't seen to be bothering him and he is wolfing down new duck and rice food, however he seems to be getting yellow runny poo not all the time but I have noticed it on a few occasions. Any thoughts, advice, I was going to carry on for a couple more weeks to see if this carries on??????

Maybe it was the medications that he has had causing the yellow runs :huh:

Some dogs don't seem to do well on Burns, so it could be that, maybe? It may be worth trying another.
I have the possibility here of having a dog with food allergies, she has been on grain free foods for ages without much success with her ears. We had the option of putting her on a food trial (think it was Hills hypoallergenic) where she would be on a very strict diet for six weeks, but since Brodie is incredibly fussy and refuses to eat kibble we have ruled that out. The vet has now recommended Chappie. She says she know a lot of people think it's quite a rubbishy food but it is quite bland. Worth a try for Brodie, I think. After months of problems with her ears and some itchiness of her skin we have been referred to a specialist.
Did the vet do a swab in Wesley's ear?

This is what I put my poppy on when she had really dry flaky skin and was itchy, it didn't work overnight but it did work. If you ask them they might even send you some free samples :luv: x x x

Just had to come and tell you about my Molly! She developed food alergies all of a sudden, age 5. I'll speed up my story, but I tried everything. The vets bill was going up and up! Some food caused more reaction then others. Her tummy would go scarlet, as would her ears. Her bum drove her insane. Scratching non stop. So....I knew by this time she was alergic to grains, ( very much to rice.) fish, (awful reaction to fish!) Most fillers. I just couldnt find wet or dry food that agreed with her. Even some that 'didn't seem as bad', weren't really the answer. So now, I cook for her. Minced chicked or turkey, boiled with potatoes peas and carrots. Somtimes I think it's a tad boring, but hey, she's not scratching or red. Gone back to being my happy Molly!

Perhaps the duck is to rich, when ruby was on jwb duck and rice her pooh's were a little loose, no problems with lamb variety although she is half raw fed

What about trying Barking Heads fusspot. Salmon and potato? Its hard to know what to do because what suits one dog doesnt always suit another. :-\
