Title: Eddys injured leg
Post by: Opher on September 21, 2012, 12:58:09 PM
Hello
My 3 year old cocker has managed to injure his leg, I think he did it getting into the car the other day.  He can put weight on it and have even been running on it but it is obviously causing him some discomfort. I've spoken to the vet and they have suggested that I just keep an eye on him over the weekend and call them on Monday if still having problems, They are not overly concerned as he can still run on it. I'm after some advice on on how is the best why to help him recover and alleviate some of his discomfort.

I'd suggest limiting his exercise for a few days (especially if he's normally very active). Shorter walks and on lead if he won't slow down off. Also try to limit his jumping on/off furniture if he usually does that. My cocker hurts himself periodically - he's a bit of a loon. A few days of 'quiet' supervised exercise usually works to allow him time to rest and recover.

Hi

Bella our 2 year old cocker has done this once one twice.  Bella gets into everything and everything and is always climing / in water......

We keep some Metacam (pardon spelling) at home and give it to her when it happens, rest for a few days and normally within 24/48 hours she is fine.

I believe a lot of the time its slight strains / hurt pad.........netherless it does worry us a lot when it does happen.

In my opinion i would rest for a few days and if still limping in 48 hours go back to the vets.

Would be good to hear other peoples comments though???

Thanks

Jon

Alfie our 8.5 yr old is always on the go at top speed when off lead (he can still out run all the girls who are younger than him  :o).
Occasionally after prolonged exercise he would limp or move stiffly the following morning.  If this happened i would lead walk him for a few days.
Jennie (poppypuppy09) recommended trying him on Seraquin for his joints.
He has been taking this for over a year now & hasn't limped etc since  :shades: :luv:

I would rest your 3 yr. old for several days with just shortish lead walk's.
If there is no improvement return to your vets next week.
It might be worth looking into giving him some joint supplements if the vet is unable to find an underlying cause.  :shades:

I agree that rest will help and if it is no better then go to the vets. I give Lyla pain relief when I know she has overdone things but then I know what is wrong. If you have any in the house I wouldn't use it because if it does come to a vet exam, you don't want to be masking symptoms. Good luck!
