I've just received an alert email from the Animal Health Trust
quote
Hello
Seasonal canine illness to feature on BBC's Countryfile
We would like to inform you that the Animal Health Trust's investigation into seasonal canine illness (SCI) will feature on BBC's Countryfile this Sunday 21 October, with the programme on air from 18:20.
As part of his 'Investigates...' series, Tom Heap speaks with Dr. Richard Newton who is spearheading the AHT's investigation into SCI. Tom will also report from woodlands where suspected cases of SCI have recently been reported. If you are a dog owner who is still unsure about what SCI is, what the clinical signs are and how you can help our investigation into this mystery illness, please watch this episode.
You can watch it live on BBC1 on 21 October or when it becomes available on BBC iPlayer for the following week.

Will make for interesting viewing, although very worrying.

Thanks for the heads up :D. I have a feeling I'll be watching it, even though it's something I'd really rather not think about, but it's best to know the facts (not that much seems to be known) about this horrible killer.
-
I got that email too, and will be watching. It is a scary thing. We stopped at Sandringham last month whilst on holiday but didn't go into the woods. The whole thing is a mystery.
-
We stopped in Sandringham about 2 years ago and Lottie got really poorly. She was one of lucky ones who survived the illness.
Will defiantly be watching!
-
Bailey also got ill after visiting Sandringham about 3 years ago, he was on a drip at the vets for about 3 days.
Will also be watching
-
A friend of mine very nearly lost his working bitch to this - was touch & go for 3 days but she came through it OK - we are in Warwickshire. Vets were brilliant but they couldn't say for certain that it was SCI but reported it just in case. Fortunately Poppy back to normal and ready for the beating season.
-
Thanks for that Mel ;)
I have only ever read one short article about it so i will watch with interest.
-
good to know that some one is highlighting this illness. we walk quite regular at sandringham and have seen the warning signs. it seems to be a autumn/ winter thing .
-
Just bumping up this post - the program is on at 6.20 tonight for anyone who'd like to watch it.
-
Thanks for bumping it, I'd thought it was on later like it used to be, so I would have missed it!

Yep I am watching and recording, as they have mentioned three woods in our area (Norfolk/Suffolk) and some of our dog club members are an active lot who like to get out and about...thought I could put it on DVD for anyone interested who missed it.
-
Also watching it......interested to see if they find the cause :dunno:
-
So they think the Prime Suspect is the harvest mite ????????? but more research required
-
Yes, the harvest mite could be responsible but let's hope their research proves conclusively before long. They say don't panic and carry on with woodland walks but I'd be loathed to take my dog into any one of the woods currently affected. I didn't realise the illness was so close to us - Sherwood Forest is quite near. >:D

S*d it,missed it >:( can i catch it on i player?

;) Thanks

When my friend's bitch Poppy was literally on deaths door, they had to shave her tummy to do an ultrasound and found that she was covered in harvest mites ............ you couldn't see them through her dark liver coat; but as Countryfile said last night its not conclusive.

Julie, that's interesting. The Animal Health Trust have an online questionnaire as they want to gather as much information as possible, if only to rule out harvest mites!
Maybe your friend could fill it in. It may come to nothing, but they are welcoming peoples' experiences to aid their research.

I've completed the questionnaire as we reckon Troy had this. Obviously we can't be sure but his symptoms match and this was something the vet suspected. In all honesty I thought she was just fobbing us off as she didn't know what it was but after researching I think she might have been right. As others have said, he ended up on a drip (I didn't think he was going to make it :'() The most awful symptom for him was the Lethargy. He was literally spaced out and really floppy with projectile vomiting. We believe the culprit was Sherwood Pines. Needless to say it has put us off visiting again at this time of year!

Drat missed it and we can't get I player here, is this only in the uk?

Neon - fortunately the vet that Poppy went to (and we do too) was straight on to the AHT and logged the incident and kept them up to date with the treatment that she responded to. One lucky little dog. They also reported to the AHT that her owners garden has an awful lot of pigeon activity i.e. poo on the ground and she has historically been abit of a poo-hooverer-upper ?! so they sent that info through and Richard is doing his best to stop her doing that too (not that easy as you can imagine) ph34r

No they block it I need an app that hides where ypu are but thanks

I may be wrong on this one but i think i remember seeing on one of the threads about the programme that someone was going to record it and put it on DVD? I may be completely wrong, but perhaps have a look and see? It might be up on youtube in a few weeks time....you never know!

I was really pleased to see this highlighted on Countryfile. We live in one of the areas affected and there are lots of notices up but I am still amazed how many people don't seem to know about it.Otto loves walking in the woods but it's too big a risk in my opinion so its beaches and fields from now on.
Last year I finally agreed to go back to the woods about April but it still worries me,are they saying that the harvest mites are only around in the Autumn?
